The Monarchy in the UK

I was scrolling through threads to see if there was anything I wanted to add to and I remembered the thread that was made when Queen Elizabeth II passed away. That thread very quickly became people airing grievances with the queen and royal family in general.

Which to be fair I happily joined in on because in my opinion, the royal family is only good for tourist revenue. Other than that, it’s a small percentage of our taxes I believe could go to something else. GP’s and appointments were cancelled due to the queen’s death including cancer treatments.

It felt like the whole country was put on hold, which didn’t make me or anyone I know mourn it made us frustrated. But the news only really showed London and the queue of people around the coffin.

Regardless of your feelings on the topic it can’t be denied that there are some obvious flaws with the monarchy and royal family, least of all Prince Andrew who I won’t talk about too much here in the PG13 section.

So here are some questions:

  • What do you think of the monarchy in the UK?
  • Does it do more harm or good? Why do you think this?
  • If you like the monarchy then how do you think the issues can be resolved?

Tbh I don’t even really know UK monarchy apart from the queen so idk if it’s still gonna help the tourism now that she’s no longer around-

She was definitley the most popular member but people don’t just come for the queen, they come for the palace and the soldiers and the other funny things

But to visit the palace you don’t need a royal family tbh
And they could just keep the soldiers around then

They literally could
There are a couple of palaces in London (Hampton Court for example) that you can pay to walk around and learn the history inside

You can pay to go into Buckingham too and you don’t get to actually see any royals

So yeah the royal family aren’t needed in any regard imo

i am NOT from the UK so my opinions are based on what i’ve seen a lot of british people say but

I don’t see the point of it, I think they’re sucking up resources that the UK needs and wasting them in frivolities to feed their egos
Also i see them as a still standing symbol of colonialism, which i’m firmly against

harm
like i said earlier, using resources that the UK needs putting the needs of the people below their egos, and bringing close to nothing (or nothing positive) to the kingdom in exchange

I don’t like them and tbqh i think they should be abolished as an institution

Apparently Katy Perry couldn’t find her seat at Charles’s coronation, and I think it’s funny.

Tbh one of the main things that bothers me is the borderline cultish responses people gave to the news when they were asked questions about the protestors. But there’s something that stuck out to me.

A woman saying that the royal family “represent what it means to be British” and that “if people don’t like it they can live elsewhere”

Obviously the second point is ridiculous, people can’t just uproute themselves and leave their homes to live in a different country. But also I’ll direct us to the phrase “my country right or wrong, if it’s right to be kept right, if it’s wrong to be set right”.

Also it seems that woman, and people who also say that stuff, think that all the people who have an issue with the monarchy are choosing to live here. When that isn’t the case, as I said, it would be extremely difficult to just completely uproute ourselves to a different country.

I would love to ask people what they mean when they talk about “what it means to be British” and “the monarchy representing Britishness” because it’s such a meaningless statement. Even ignoring the history of the royal family and what they used to do, you can clearly see that these days they’re a spectacle piece. A tourist attraction with the power to shut the country down for days if one of them dies.

The power to close roads and put up barriers whenever they may be present. They do not rule the country, but they are the figure heads and we didn’t choose them, yet we need to pay a percentage of our taxes towards them, if you look at the percentage it seems small but when you look at the amount of money that small percentage produces, it’s a lot that should go to sectors that need it more.

Then obviously if you do look into the history of the monarchy you can see that it was less than pleasent. It’s not my job to do research for people and provide all the sources during physical conversations. All of this can be confirmed with a quick google search, it doesn’t take much effort to engage in critical thinking.

Futhermore, last time I watched the news they said 64 peaceful protestors were arrested because the police “thought” they were going to “cause trouble”.

It’s pathetic and if being British means thinking all that stuff is perfectly normal and okay then wowee, this really is a cult.
