Update 13/12/19

A lot has happened so I’ll do some of this from memory:

  • Juice WRLD died aged 21. He took pills in an attempt to hide them as the pilot of his plane had told the police (I think). This led to a seizure and then his death. RIP.
  • Nicki Minaj released TUSA and is Billboards rapper of the decade. She also said she won’t give up music completely so we may continue to get some new songs from her
  • Doja Cat released her sophomore album “Hot Pink”
  • Eminem and Nick Cannon have beef. Haven’t heard them yet but Nick Cannon dropped 2 diss tracks on Eminem
  • Rico Nasty dropped the song “Time Flies”
  • Iggy Azalea dropped her EP “Wicked Lips”
  • Megan Thee Stallion released a mini website series called “Hottieween”

Unpopular Opinions #1 - Do we only give rappers clout once theyre dead?

My 2 cents:
I kinda agree with this? Obviously some rappers do deserve their clout regardless e.g. Tupac and Biggie’s impact on rap is prominent and they were both given their props before they died. But for some other rappers it does feel like they’re only given the title of legend or king once they’ve passed away, take Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle. There was so much support for them but only after they died and it almost felt disingenuous.

I agree with this :100:. Heck, XxxTentacion got a damn museum and I still don’t understand why. I know these people have good music or “decent” music but they don’t deserve to be defended and praised as if they are Gods.

In a strange- no, actually this is so damn true.

Slightly off topic but it’s actually scary how people can profit off of you even after you’re dead…

I watched TROYCETV’s video on YouTube about people only giving rappers clout once they’re dead and I agree.

Btw here’s the “schedule” for this thread:

  • Reviews/Recommendations - I need stuff to review first :joy: There should be at least one in the next two weeks
  • Updates - Whenever anything happens so daily/weekly/biweekly
  • Polls - Should be at least one in January
  • UOs - Weekly/Biweekly
  • Wiki/Playlist - Can do this whenever. Might put it in the OP so it doesn’t get lost with the other stuff.

Unpopular Opinions #2 - Is Truth Hurts a rap song?

First of all I wanna apologize for not sticking to the schedule. I’ve been busy doing some a-level stuff but I’ll try to stick to the schedule better!

Anyways, Truth Hurts was released in 2017 and on the album “Cuz I Love You” by American singer and rapper Lizzo. It’s been nominated for the 2020 Grammy’s for “Record of the Year”, “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Solo Performance”.

I’ve chosen it for a UO because there’s been some controversy as to whether or not it’s actually a rap song. Truth Hurts is longest solo female rap #1 in history dethroning “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea ft Charli XCX despite the song being very pop sounding whilst Fancy was very clearly a rap song with hip-hop influences. Additionally, it begs the question on whether “7 Rings” by Ariana Grande is also a rap song and whether Lizzo actually counts as a rapper.

My 2 cents:
It’s not a rap song. To me it sounds very pop (and there’s nothing wrong with that) plus Lizzo’s rapping sounds more like sing-talking (dunno how else to put it). The song has a hip-hop sound but I wouldn’t consider it a rap. Also, Lizzo is still a rapper because she does have other rap songs. Rapper’s can do singing and still be rappers e.g. Nicki Minaj.
