Honestly why I dropped EXO. And people are still defending them!
Update 10/02/20
- Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj had some beef on Twitter
the two had a small back and forth of indirects in which Meek Mill took shots at Nicki’s brother who’s been sentenced 25 years for r@ping a child and her husband Kenneth Petty who’s also been charged for a similar offence whilst Nicki accused Meek of hitting women in his life such as his mother and sister. Empressive made a video which clarifies the situation
- Nicki Minaj dropped “Yikes” which was trending on YouTube and reached number 1 on US i-tunes
- Lil’ Nas X dropped the music video for “Rodeo” ft Nas - The MV is a vampire-Matrix mashup
- R&B singer iyla (who I love stream OTHER WAYS TO VENT out now
) dropped “Cash Rules” which samples C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) ft. Method Man from The Wu-Tang Clan!
- There have been rumours of Megan Thee Stallion dating G-Eazy
- Meg confirmed they’re not together
- Halsey shut down a fan mentioning G-Eazy at her show - she has hinted at G-Eazy being abusive which is why she reacted the way she did (and she’s entitled to react that way too!)
- Today, Melanie Martinez and Tierra Whack dropped “Copy Cat”
- one of my fave alt-pop girls and favourite rap girls coming together
Most definently! I don’t even like Halsey but even I agree with her reaction. Whoever kept doing it was totally disrespectful.
Meek Mill is right, but so is Nicki. Meek can never keep his mouth shut, damn fool.
This song goes hard!
Damn right! That song is dope!!
Update 25/02/20
- A flyer for a festival named “Lovers & Friends” sparked interest as the festival lineup included Lauryn Hill, Twista, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Jhene Aiko, Usher and many more iconic artists. However it’s legitimacy is up for debate as Lil’ Kim, Twista and Mase said it was fake whilst Foxy and Usher said it was real. Kim then confirmed her attendance but posted a version that didn’t have Foxy’s name
Idk if this festival is real but here’s the flyer so you can see for yourself:
- Doja Cat got into trouble after a video surfaced of her looking like she had sniffed something… not legal. She confirmed she was just drunk
- Doja will also be going on tour for her album, “Hot Pink”
- Megan Thee Stallion’s “Fever” is close to being certified gold
- Nicki Minaj served us her Trinidad carnival look
- [Just found this now and I’m crying
] Skai Jackson’s mum dragged Bhad Bhabie aka the Cash Me Outside Girl and her mother for being rude to Skai and after Bhad Bhabie threatened to fight her
Unpopular Opinions #4 - Is Doja Cat the New Nicki Minaj?
(Edit made by yours truly)
Over the past few months or so there’s been a lot of talk about Doja Cat and how she and Nicki Minaj have a lot of similarities. I’ve chosen it as a UO because it seems cool to talk about!
First of all, who is Doja Cat? Her full name is Amala Zandile Dlamini and she’s an American rapper who released her first single, “So High” in 2013 before releasing her debut EP “Purrr!” in 2014. Doja went viral in 2018 after releasing “Moooo!”, a meme song with funny green screen visuals and farm-themed lyrics. Doja would then surprise the music industry with her debut album, “Amala” which gave us “Juicy” which would later be remixed with Tyga and “Tia Tamera” featuring Rico Nasty. In 2019, Doja released her 2nd album “Hot Pink” which spawned “Say So”, her most streamed song on Spotify to date. The album is well received. This year, she was featured in the Birds of Prey soundtrack and is considered a great part of the new generation of female rap along with Saweetie, Megan Thee Stallion, Rico Nasty, Tierra Whack and many, many more!
As for Nicki Minaj, she needs no introduction! The female rapper with the most Hot 100 entries, gave us hits after hits such as “Starships”, “Pound the Alarm” and “Super Bass” and revived female rap for the 2010s giving us the new female gen I just mentioned!
So, why the comparisons? Doja’s very reminiscent of the early Nicki Minaj, with animated raps, out-there lyrics and a very versatile list of songs ranging from reggae, R&B, pop as well as hip-hop. Doja has even credited Nicki’s legacy in an Instagram live.
Are these comparisons valid?
My 2 cents
I like Doja AND Nicki! There’s nothing wrong with pointing out their similarities because they are similar in some ways but I’m tired of the unnecessary competition between female rappers. Doja is not a copy of Nicki, differences do exist between the two as well as similarities. Doja has praised Nicki so I don’t get why some people are trying so hard to create beef between them. And lastly, Nicki isn’t going anywhere! She doesn’t have to “fade away” for Doja to thrive. There is room in the female rap game for everyone
The ultimate queen
New female rapper: debuts
Everyone: the new Nicki??
I won’t lie, Doja has potential of becoming the new queen of rap.
They can both be queens of rap. But hey, Doja makes some awesome music!
Rap VS #2
I missed the poll for February so I’ve decided to do a double for March. The theme is old-school rappers! It’s also 23 years since Notorious B.I.G died - R.I.P to a rap legend
Notorious B.I.G
vs
Tupac
- Notorious B.I.G
- Tupac
and…
Lil’ Kim
vs
Foxy Brown
- Lil’ Kim
- Foxy Brown
That second one is hard
Nice choices !!
Update 18/03/20
A LOT has happened! Here’s the update:
- After a struggle regarding her contract, Megan Thee Stallion released her mixtape “SUGA” - it debuted at #10 on the Billboard 200, spawned a TikTok dance and has made Megan the first female rapper to have 2 non-albums in the top 10 of the Billboard 200
- Someone made a song out of Cardi B’s coronavirus video and it started trending!
- Kodak Black seems upset that Megan didn’t credit him for her phrase “driving the boat”
- Doja Cat did a live vevo performance of “Streets” and released a disco-themed music video for “Say So”
- Roddy Rich’s “The Box” had been at no.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks now
- Ellie Goulding and Blackbear dropped “Worry About Me”
Charles Cornell did that!
Bump!
Just wanted to say we’re due an unpopular opinion soon! The next one will be more of an analysis than a UO btw…
Unpopular Opinions #5 - Did Lil Kim’s "9" album flop?
It’s time to address the elephant in the room surrounding Lil’ Kim’s discography! As I said before, this UO will be more analysis focused and I’ve chosen it because this is something I’ve been thinking about for a while as someone who listens to Lil’ Kim’s music. BTW this isn’t directing hate towards Kim, my only focus is this one album.
Background info on Lil' Kim
Lil’ Kim’s full name is Kimberly Denise Jones and she is a female rapper and songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. She is notorious for opening doors for female rappers in terms of embracing sexuality and femininity in hip-hop, introducing colourful wigs, explicit lyrics and high fashion which many female rappers of later generations, such as Nicki Minaj and Cardi B would pick up on. Lil’ Kim has sold 15 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide and is regarded as a fashion icon.
On October 11th 2019, Kim would release her first album in 14 years titled “9” as she considers the number to have spiritual value as her mentor and partner Biggie Smalls died on the 9th, Junior M.A.F.I.A consisted of 9 members and her daughter, Royal Reign being born on the 9th of June 2014. “9” has 9 tracks and showcases Kim’s singing abilities. It has trap elements and shows Kim’s evolved sound since days of her debut album “Hardcore” in 1996.
So, why is “9” considered a flop? Based on its commercial performance and overall reception from Kim’s fans and non-fans alike, “9” can be considered her weakest album. 9 is Kim’s first album to fail to enter the Billboard 200 and was predicted to sell less than 1,000 copies. Whilst charts do not dictate musical quality, Lil’ Kim’s impact and legacy would dictate a better commercial turnout.
Next, is the promotion (TLDR - Too many promo singles + dodgy release dates):
- 9 was due to release in 2018, then this date was pushed to May 2019 but the album didn’t release until October that year. This led to “Took Us a Break”, a promo single for the intended 2018 release being lost in limbo as it never made onto the official tracklist of 9.
- “Nasty One” released in 2018 would then become the lead for the album and it was accompanied with a colourful music video with a Caribbean setting to match the sound of the song. However, this didn’t end up on the album either (it’s on the CD deluxe version of the album as a bonus track, but it’s the remix featuring Stefflon Don, HoodCelebrityy and Kranium so Nasty One never “officially” made it onto 9).
- The official lead would be “Go Awff” which had mixed reviews from fans - one half liking Kim’s new sound, the other wishing for her to return to older flows and beats.
- Next promo single “Auto Blanco”, a trap inspired song with hard-hitting bars would have the best reception from fans but would be released on SoundCloud.
- Then “Found You” ft. O.T. Genasis and City Girls would be released in September 2019 and “Pray For Me” ft Rick Ross and Musiq Soulchild a week before the album release. Despite having better reactions than Go Awff and Nasty One they had little time to settle down and be fully fleshed out.
Next up was the sound:
- Singing - Kim’s singing was considered excessive throughout the album and older fans wanted her to focus on hardcore rapping
- Autotune - Kim’s sound since the Hardcore 2k14 mixtape has been trap based with the use autotune and again, older fans prefered Kim’s unfiltered sound. Similar to the singing, the autotune was considered excessive
On the flip side:
- Cardi B, Azealia Banks and others showed praise for the album
- Lil’ Kim has sung multiple times throughout previous albums and so her singing on 9 is nothing new in her body of work
- Auto Blanco features Kim’s trap, autotune sound and yet is considered the best song on the album. The issue seems to lie in how the trap sound is executed not trap as a genre itself
- This was Kim’s first album after 14 years, it was unlikely to surpass her previous works anyway
- 9 is a 2 part album and so it’s not entirely fair to judge it without part 2. The sales of 9 came from hip-hop reporting website, ThatGrapeJuice.Net but was never confirmed from an official source. Again, 9 is only half an album so low sales were to be expected.
My 2 cents:
Personally, I didn’t like 9. I only really claim “Pray For Me” and “Auto Blanco”. I hoped “Took Us a Break” would have made the cut for 9 because it is one of her best modern songs and is one of the best executions of the trap sound Kim’s trying to create. I also hoped 9 would have more visuals like a lyric video for each and much higher budget video for Found You because the video looks low quality imo. Kim confirmed on Instagram that she’s working with Tory Lanez, so hopefully, this means she’s understood the criticisms from 9 part 1. I dislike how Kim’s fans are torn between unwilling to critique Kim’s newer songs and hating on everything that doesn’t sound like Harcore or Notorious K.I.M. Whilst I didn’t like 9, I’m still going to continue to listen to Kim because I don’t think one bad album part is going to “ruin” her career or negate everything she’s ever done for female rap. I still think the 9 era can be saved!
