It’s worth it though, I’ve really grown from this trip as a person. And honestly, on average it’s so healthy for my mental health to not feel stuck in some daily routine and basically experience something new every day
It’s honestly fun this way, when I was with friends in France, it always took ages making decisions and getting ready. It just feels like a waste of time… And while I said before I would have loved to be here with my bf, I think it would have irritated me a bit. Like in many ways we have very different things we like to do and see, so we would probably have to spend a lot of time discussing schedules and things we will actually be doing and making sure we are both happy with the plans…
Well, when I go I plan to go on a working holiday visa. Sure, I definitely still need quite a bit of money beforehand, but it’s a nice idea I’ll actually be able to earn some money there as well!
It’s interesting tho, I’m in a small city in Peru (more like a town) now, and there are like 2/3 shops that sell like snacks and bottles of drinks, but not a proper supermarket. So I’m actually quite interested how people get their food here, as I can’t find anything that suggests there is a market here
Not much, lol, basically went out last night and was back in the hostel around midnight, but didn’t sleep until at least an hour later. And then I had to wake up at 6am to catch a bus to where I am now. (Tho, I had one decent night of 8.5 hours of sleep in between!)
It’s not actually tradition in my family to give each other presents for Christmas, but honestly, this sounds like such a fun idea. Even if it’s just a small thing for everyone, I think they would like it!
In case you’re wondering why I took so long between liking your message and sending the reply, sort of am writing this while I’m in a voice call with my bf. While I am someone who needs to do something else during a voice call, having an actual conversation and typing about other things at the same time is surprisingly difficult
I’m pretty interested to see how being back in the Netherlands will affect my mental health, there are definitely a lot of nice things there for me, but it’s also back to that daily routine and also living with my parents might be a bit tricky…
That sounds interesting, lol
Not the first option, it’s in the middle of the dessert though next to the sea, so fish is an option. But it’s also in the middle of nowhere, not close to any other decent sized cities. So I guess either I’ve missed stores or they more or less live off of fish only
Lol, I’m someone who really needs 8 hours of sleep at least consistently to function well…
This is the first time I truly have a regret in my itinerary. While the place I’m currently at is pretty cool, it’s also kinda dead and there’s not much to do here. Like it’s basically a tiny town around an oasis. If you walk around for 30 minutes, you’ve literally seen everything there is to see… And I’m staying here for basically 3 days/2 nights. So yeah, I’m bored. Could have done it with one night that would have given me more flexibility later on making the pace a lot better
Time for some more serious talk about travelling, it comes with some risks. In all countries I’ve been this far in South America I’ve dealt with some type of protesting affecting my trip in various degrees. Especially in Colombia and now Peru I’ve been dealing with it.
In Colombia there was some confrontation between the police and a group indigenous people when I was in Bogotá. Basically it wasn’t safe for me to go out for an afternoon and evening as I was staying very close to the location of the protests. I was a bit shaken up, I mean, it hit very close to me so it was a bit scary…
Now I’m in Peru, well, the tension is high here right now after the political chaos. I haven’t really faced it much myself (with the exception of a small peaceful demonstration in Arequipa a few days ago) until yesterday. As a result of protests, the road my bus was on was shut down. Basically a trip that should have taken 10 hours took 25 hours, yep, 15 hours more than it should have taken. And there is a good possibility that my trip to Machu Picchu tomorrow gets cancelled as well. I mean, if it’s cause of the safety of course cancel it, but it would be very disappointing. I’m not sure when I’ll be in Cusco again, if ever at all… So yeah, I’ll be sad if it won’t happen, finding out this afternoon if I can or can’t go…
It’s interesting to me, how when talking about safety in South America people tend to think violence and your stuff getting stolen ect., but to me what I’ve experienced just the fact it’s quite unstable politically and the protests and how they are dealt with are a much bigger risk for your travel.
Super excited about planning this! Can’t wait to start this trip. @Ouijaloveletters, I decided to add Italy regardless and I’m happy with that decision. I upped by budget a bit and decided to both have Alpes as well as some Italian days
Planning such a trip isn’t all fun and excitement though. It has giving me a headache multiple times as it’s quite stressful and a lot. Accommodation, transportation, me constantly changing my mind on the route slightly
Try and go into it open minded. I can guarantee you at first you’ll experience a massive culture shock. If you haven’t been abroad, I think that might be quite an intense feeling. But I do feel like you are someone who does respect different cultures and in general understands things are different in other countries, so I think that feeling will fade.
What I’ll also say, the weather is probably really unpredictable, it might be super hot, or it might be raining a lot. And then I talk a lot, as it is rain season in the Philippines. Pack for those different weathers.
