Thoughts on the different -dere tropes

If you’ve watched anime, you’ve definitely encountered some of the different -dere, which are archetypes given to anime characters. The different types are:

  • Tsundere - Comes from tsuntsun, meaning aloof. Tsundere characters have harsh personality and act in a way where they show hatred toward their love interest.
  • Yandere - Comes from yanderu, meaning sick. Yandere characters are obsessed with their love interest and will get them through any means necessary.
  • Deredere - Meaning lovestruck. Deredere characters are kind to everyone and make sure that their love interest knows it.
  • Dandere - Comes from dan, meaning silence. Dandere characters are quiet and shy, but can break out of their shell when around their love interest.
  • Himedere (F)/Oujidere (M) - Himedere and Oujidere characters aren’t necessarily royalty, but want to be treated as such by their love interest
  • Bakadere - Comes from baka, meaning stupid. Bakadere characters are clumsy and don’t always make smart decisions.
  • Kamidere - Comes from kami, meaning god. Kamidere characters have a god complex and often crave power more than a love interest.
  • Kuudere - Comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word “cool”. Kuudere characters are quiet, cold, and cynical. They rarely show a caring side, even to their love interest.
  • Sadodere - Comes from Sadomasochism. Sadodere characters find pleasure in putting their love interest into situations that cause them pain or humiliate them.
  • Shundere - Comes from the Japanese sound “shun”, which is used to express sadness. Shundere characters are usually sad and have a depressing aura around them.

  • What do you think about the different dere tropes?
  • Are there any that you like or dislike?
  • Do any of your favourite characters fit into these archetypes?
