The year is 2137. After WWV, more commonly called ‘the war to end all wars’ broke out, every nation was left in ruins, unable to function. After years in a new dark age, three leaders rose up to fix the world again. Some call them demigods, while others called them angels. Whatever they were, they were able to unite the world under three nations, each under the divine guidance of a different ancient pantheon. Europe and Asia became Andromeda, worshiping the Greek gods; Africa and Australia became Xilin, under the rule of the Egyptian pantheon; The Americas formed Nyss, being commanded by the Norse gods. There was peace for many years, and the original creators of the nations left Earth and removed any trace of their existence. But with the leaders gone, peace didn’t last- 50 years later, the nations are once again in a shaky alliance, on the verge of all-out war. So, with no other choice, the nations turned to their last resort- praying.

And the gods listened.

Each god chose a child from their respective nations to be their champions, receiving their powers and being able to call upon them in times of crisis. After the nations realized their prayers had come true, they rounded up their respective champions and sending them to a training camp to learn how to use their powers efectively. Because, know it or not, each of the kid’s fates are the same.

Kill the other nations champions- or die.

The Andromedean Training Base

November 5th, 10:00 a.m.

In a cold, barren region of Andromeda, a group of fortified cars made their way up a snowy mountainside. Within those cars were treasures more precious than any relic, more valuable than any jewel. Over the course of months, the Greek champions had been saught out, some coming peacefully- others taken forcefully. Andromeda was determined to win the war under any means necessary, being it had the most to lose. Part of that was recruiting and training the Champions.

Once the cars had reached the summit, they pulled up to what looked like an unassuming village, filled with log cabins and other, more modern buildings. Out of the first car stepped out a professionally-dressed man, peering around the camp as the Champions were escorted out of the rest of the cars. Once the gaggle of teens was gathered in a group, he started to speak.

“Hello, children,” he started with a stoic expression. “I am Alek Bykov, a general of the Andromedean military and the new leader of this training base. You have been collected here to train your powers and learn to be an asset to our nation. You do not have a choice in this matter- our gods ordain it. And,” the corner of his lip curled up a bit. “Do not attempt to leave. This will be the only warning you get.”

He started walking away. “Schedule and dorm assignments will be posted soon. I recommend you not be late.” And with that, the Greek champions were left to their own devices.

The Xilian Center of Champions

November 5th, 9:00 a.m.

A group of jeeps drove over beaten dirt and sand paths, staying close to one another like a pack of lions. They roamed through what seemed like barren deserts and plains, until what seemed like a small tribal town peeked over the horizon. The jeeps stopped once they reached it, and they unloaded their passengers, ushering them towards a large building in the center of the town.

A blast of air conditioning hit the Champions as they entered, the inconspicuous building completely modernized on the inside. Inside laid several long tables, seemingly a dining hall of sorts, with a raised platform in the very back to function as a stage. On the stage stepped a woman with dark skin and short, safari-style clothing.

“Good morning, everyone,” she started with a smile. “My name is Adaeze Nkosi. I’m happy that your journies were safe.” She scanned the group of children. “You all understand that you are special. The other nations believe their champions to be weapons of destruction and chaos. But the people of Xilin know that you will be the ones to bring peace to our nations.”

She paused. “We will give you a portion of the day to get settled in and meet one another. At 1:00, your tasks will start.” Adaeze walked off the stage, and before exiting, said one last phrase, “Please, make yourself at home.”

Camp Nyss

November 5th, 4:00 p.m.

The limousine pulled up to what could’ve been a perfectly average summer camp. Young adults bustled around in matching tshirts and various summer wear, laughing and playing around. Out of the crowd stepped a young twenty-something with red hair and a wide smile.

“Hey guys!” She said as the kids filed out of the limo. “Welcome to Camp Nyss! You guys are the Champions, right?” She looked around inquisitively as a few kids nodded their heads. “Awesome. Well, since it’s already afternoon, we decided to give you guys today off. Dorm assignments will be up soon, so check those when you’re ready. Otherwise, you can check out the lake, or talk to each other, or do whatever.”

She stopped to take a breath. “Oh, and I’m Brooke, by the way. I was assigned to be one of the supervisors here, so ask me any questions!” With that, she walked away to join some of the other supervisors.

At: The Xilian Center of Champions

After the speech Ms. Nkosi gave, Kalinda’s lips pressed together. She knew that, most likely, they were supposed to achieve this peace through violence. This was something she couldn’t do. She didn’t do violence. She’d only come here because of the slim chance that this wasn’t about fighting. But if it was then she thought that she could convince them to maybe-- just maybe

Quickly shaking her head, Kalinda drew her thoughts away from it all. She didn’t know the nature of the camp yet so she would not to worry for now. She decided to take Ms. Nkosi’s advice and find some other champions to talk to.

As Bykov walked away, Celosia narrowed his eyes at the man’s back. “Who does that cocky b.str.d think he is?” he muttered under his breath. The blatant abuse of authority reminded him of the military. He’d hoped this champion stuff would be different, but at least he would get to fight for his country.

Since he had nothing else to do, he decided to take some time to get to know the other champions. He didn’t want to go through this h.ll alone. Looking around for someone to talk to, he saw quite a few younger faces. Some of them looked like they hadn’t even started junior high.

Once he found someone who looked his age, he approached them. “There are a bunch of babies here, huh.” He extended his hand towards them and grinned. “I’m Celosia Demos and I’m ready to kick some *ss. Who are you?”

After Brooke gave the speech, Nork quickly took out his tiny notebook and pen, and he noted what he heard. He tucked the book in his pocket, and put the pen on his ear. He looked around. Birds chirped around, and trees surrounded them. Nork decided he would approach the lake. He put his hands in his pocket, and he went off to find the lake.

He sat down by the lake, and he meditated. He focused on sounds and smells, as he took out his notebook and started writing. He wrote about a girl that was purely all powers, and he looked around to observe. The lake was at least a bit empty, and people were chattering around him. ‘I should talk to someone.’ He thought as he stood up and looked for someone to talk to.

“Well that’s it?” Lou tossed a half-hearted hand sideways, losing any kind of warmth his thin cardigan might have offered as he watched the man leave. “We just… Scatter?”

He quickly realised whoever he thought he had been addressing had already left. “Guess that answers my question, then.”

Wandering into the enclosed dispersion of teenagers, he smiled at anyone who would make eye contact with him. It’s always nice to be a friendly face, but the amount of lost-puppy-esque children who needed some kind of reassurance was worrying. He offered what comfort he could. It wasn’t much. Who the hell chooses to give teenagers godly powers? A real stupid decision on their part. Just waiting for the first death via mood swing.

It didn’t take long for someone to approach him.

“I’m Celosia Demos and I’m ready to kick some ass. Who are you?”

Turning towards Celosia, Lou went to reach for the extended hand, changing his mind at the last second and performing an awkward half-fistbump to the open palm.

“Lou Fischer,” he pulled his cardigan over his shoulder and returned Celosia’s grin, “less here for the ass-kicking, more for the free drinks. Also open to ass.”

When the guy did that awkward fist bump with Celosia’s open palm, he snorted in surprise. “The f*ck was that?” He asked, his friendly grin changing to an amused smirk. Instead of lowering his hand, he rose his other hand to give himself a handshake. It was uncomfortable because his two hands didn’t quite fit together but he made it work. “Now that is how you give someone a proper handshake.”

“Lou Fischer, less here for the .ss-kicking, more for the free drinks. Also open to .ss.”

He chortled at Fischer’s statement. “Too bad it seems like Bykov’s got a stick up his. I’m guessing this whole thing,” he said, gesturing a hand at the rest of the camp, “wasn’t what you were expecting.”

“But even in the military, we were allowed to throw barrack parties.” With a mischievous grin, he spoke again. “How 'bout we throw the first one.”

With a chuckle, Lou copied the action of Celosia, attempting to shake his own hand. “I’ll have to keep practising, get it right next time. No excuses.”

“Not what I was expecting”, he repeated, more to himself than anyone else. He was not a likely candidate for any amount of power. No one here seemed to be. “Not what I was expecting at all,” his smile faltered.

“But anyways,” his hands clapped together, snapping him back into reality, “could never say no to a party. Especially if there’s a chance it’ll p.ss off what-his-face the w.nkjob. I have to agree with you on that one, he just seems like a bit of a d.ck. Don’t like him already.”

“Not what I was expecting at all."

When Celosia saw Fischer’s face fall, his lips pressed together. He took another look around at the other champions at the camp. After witnessing Fischer’s change in mood, he saw his fellow champions in a new light. He saw scared, innocent children, forced to fight in a war that they wanted nothing to do with. Before he could feel too bad, he closed his heart off to it. He had enough to worry about for himself and he didn’t even know anyone here. They could care for themselves.

He turned his attention back to Fischer. Luckily, before he could even worry about having to comforting Fischer, his face brightened up. He heard Fischer agree to the party and talk about how much of an *sshole Bykov was.

He gave Fischer an enthusiastic slap on the back. “That’s the spirit. Maybe we could even get some alcoh*l. Lord knows we’ll need it.”

“Just a bit of d*ck?” He looked over at the area that Bykov once stood in. “Really, I doubt anyone does, not even his own mother. I’d almost run away just to spite that *sshole.”

“If we can’t find any drinks, Dionysus’s champion has to be hiding somewhere; I bet they can sort something out.” Lou made note to find said champion and befriend them asap, quickly glancing around to see if there was anyone obvious they could be. Seeing there was no one downing entire bottles of vodka, he assumed they were elsewhere. "I’m definitely not training now. Bykov is probably expecting us to dedicate our lives to this sh*t. No thank you, sir. "

The thought of training was already starting to cause him a headache. Being reliable and consistent was a lot, and Lou already knew he was going to waste time. It wasn’t so much ‘an aim’ as it was ‘inevitable’. Just who he was as a person. But the plan was to actively try to be a nuisance. And a party was a great place to start.

“Let’s just hope we don’t get kicked out before we even get our rooms posted. Or hope we do. Pros and Cons.”

“Heh, your right.” He said with a small smile.

"I’m definitely not training now. Bykov is probably expecting us to dedicate our lives to this sh.t. No thank you, sir. "

After hearing that statement, his eyes hardened somewhat. His tongue was tied for a moment. He knew it was probably best to keep quiet about it but…

“Let’s just hope we don’t get kicked out before we even get our rooms posted. Or hope we do. Pros and Cons.”

It was then that he finally opened his mouth. He couldn’t help it. “I don’t agree with you there. I want to fight for Andromeda. Those other b.st.rds,” he narrowed his eyes at the ground and his words were clearly filled with venom, “have champions too. If I don’t fight then Andromeda will have a huge disadvantage.” With that he looked back up at Fischer, waiting for his response.

As Valentine stepped quietly out of the limo, he couldn’t help but roll his eyes at the youthful redhead who was calling to him and the other kids from up on a concrete stage. Was she supposed to be in charge? She barely looked like she was older than he was, and she didn’t seem too invested in the competition, either. He instinctively tuned out whatever she was saying. He didn’t pay attention to people who weren’t worth his time.

As the other Nyss Champions wondered off from the main group, ambling around the camp, chating idly or searching for their dorms, Valentine stood stoically in the camp’s center. He looked around quietly at the others in his camp, studying his competition. Even though they were from the same nation as he was and technically his allies, he’d read enough books in his life to know that, most likely, only one champion would be the lucky one to survive. If it came to that, he knew that the last man standing would be him. He wouldn’t let his goddes down.

Out of the corner of his eye, he checked to see if Brooke was still up on the stage. She wasn’t. He didn’t spot her amoung the crowd of champions, either. Once he was sure he wasn’t being watched, Valentine quietly slipped his hand into his pocket. After fishing around for a bit, he felt what he was looking for- His most prized possesion: His father’s hunting knife. The shining silver blade had been warped and burned during the bombings, but it was still as sharp as it had been when Valentine had gutted his first elk- Maybe even sharper. In fact, even as he ran his thumb lovingly along the blade, Valentine slit his skin open and felt cold blood slithering down his fingertips. He didn’t even feel the pain that the cut should have given him. He couldn’t remeber the last time he felt pain.

Oh, wait. Of course he remembered. How could he ever forget?

“See, thing is,” Lou completely missed the tone of voice, assuming his opinion was needed, “I think a lot of people don’t want to fight. I don’t want to. I mean, sh-t. I wouldn’t be doing anything if I wasn’t here. Just my normal routine. Don’t even have any talents. Some old Goddess just went off on a whim and gave me powers, and now I’m expected to save my entire f-cking country.” He paused and took a breath, realising he was beginning to talk a little too quickly to properly comprehend. “We’re all kids. All kids who have no idea what we’re doing here. Some of us want to fight- and that’s fine- but I don’t. And we all have to.”

He hovered for a second, before sitting on the ground awkwardly. “I’m 16, man,” he said, gently. “I don’t even know what I want to eat next, I’m the wrong person to help decide the outcome of a whole-ass war.”

After an uncomfortable pause, he continued. “Enough about that,” he smiled brightly in an attempt at a silent apology, looking up at an odd angle and trying to move the conversation along, “we’ve got a long time before it’s a bigger issue. No big showdowns on the horizon just yet. Let’s just… Not worry; for now at least.”

As Nork was strolling around, he found an odd guy with a mask on his face. Nork thought, since he was the only person that looked interesting, he would approach him. As Nork approached the masked man, he noticed that he had cut himself, pretty bad. But the man didn’t feel anything at all, and shrugged it off. Nork however, as a complete dork, found this cool, forgetting how they all had superpowers.

“Hi! I’m Paradele Norka. Nork, basically.” Nork said, as he extended his arm to shake. He looked scary, Nork thought. “Who’s your god? Or godess, pardon me.” Nork said, awkwardly scratching his neck. Nork started to back away, and slip on his shoelace. He fell to the ground, and he stood up quickly. “Whoops.” He muttered under his breath. This conversation couldn’t get any weireder, could it?

After hearing everything Fischer said, he looked to the side. He knew that most people here were just scared children who were being forced to fight. “Unfortunately, the gods think otherwise… We’re the biggest chance for Andromeda to win this war and if we don’t, who knows what those b.st.rds will do to us.”

“Enough about that, we’ve got a long time before it’s a bigger issue. No big showdowns on the horizon just yet. Let’s just… Not worry; for now at least.”

“Circe. So if I try really hard I can probably turn you into a goat or something.”

He had practised magic, but his definition of ‘practise’ was finding a big stick and yelling spells from Harry Potter. It didn’t work. He pinned it on the fact that his new ‘staff’ was way too big to work as a wand. He just hadn’t found any interesting abilities yet. Not that turning his peers into animals on will wasn’t interesting, but it wasn’t useful, either.

“I don’t get how it works, exactly; there’s not really a guidebook, just ‘general magic’, whatever that can be described as.” Lou sighed and adjusted his position so it was marginally less uncomfortable, leaning back onto his hands. “I heard she was devious and seductive and sh*t. Don’t know why the hell she would pick me as her champion. An attempt to f-ck over the other Gods, mayhaps? Apparently they didn’t get along so well, so it’s not out of the equation. But Holy Politics aren’t really my forte.”

Lou looked over to Celosia, realising he had gone off on a bit of a tangent. “Back on topic; who’s your patron? I would make a guess, but I know I’ll get it wrong.”

Valentine had been lost in thought when he felt an overwhelmingly mediocre presence looming near him. He looked up to see a young boy creeping towards him, a mixture of fascination and fear on his face. It was an expression that Valentine had seen many times.

Valentine watched as the boy awkwardly tried to introduce himself. "Hi! I’m Paradele Norka. Nork, basically.” He said, and Valentine chuckled a bit. The boy was amusing, almost like a little kid who was shy around grownups. He was endearing. Not endearing enough that Valentine would shake the hand he offered, but still quite pleasant. "Who’s your god? Or godess, pardon me.” Nork asked him, but before Valentine could even answer, it seemed like he was already getting scared away. He backed up a bit, tripping on his shoelace and falling onto his backside with a tiny, bashful “Whoops!”.

Valentine couldn’t help it. He burt out laughing as the boy scrambled to his feet. He’d met a lot of people who were adorable when they were scared, but this guy might just take the cake. “I’m the Champion of Freya.” He said, still wheezing a bit. He hadn’t laughed that hard in a long, long time. “You know, you really should tie your shoes.”

“A goat?” He shook his head in slight disapproval. “If you’re gonna turn me into anything, it’s gotta be something bad*ss. A shark for example.” He spoke with a satisfied smile. For a moment, he thought over what he said. Imagining himself flopping helplessly on the floor and dying a slow death, he decided that he didn’t want to be a shark. “No I’d probably suffocate… Change me into a cassowary instead.”

He heard Fischer talk about his powers and what Circe was like.

“Yeah, that sh.t’s super confusing.” He didn’t want to touch that sh.t with a ten foot pole and wondered how the Gods kept up with it. “But your powers sound like they’re gonna get super strong. General magic must include a lot of things.”

“Back on topic; who’s your patron? I would make a guess, but I know I’ll get it wrong.”

“Hephaestus, the blacksmith for the Gods. My powers are manipulating and creating fire.” He said with a confident smile. “Pretty f*cking cool if I do say so myself.”

The kid seemed pretty unconfident, so Valentine decided to tread careful when talking to him from now on. He was cute. Valentine would hate to hurt his feelings.

He had some rather tame powers; Enhanced Strength, Speed, and Reflexes were almost boring compared to manipulation of water or incredible war stratedgy. Although, what more should he expect from Frigga? She wasn’t exactly an inspiring sort of goddess. Maybe because he pitied Nork or maybe because he didn’t want to wound his fragile ego, Valentine made sure to downplay his powers when Nork asked about them. “Oh, My powers aren’t anything to talk about. There almost the same as yours, actually: Strength, Speed, Reflexes, and a little bit of Seidr magic. I can also sense people’s emotions. Other than that, though, I’m just a normal guy. I put my trousers on one leg at a time. And I do feel pain.” He smiled, gently correcting Nork. “Are you good at fighting?” He asked.
