Anthony shifted uncomfortably in his seat as Reece and Alissa’s argument grew more heated. He didn’t particularly like either of them, but he had to admit that Alissa’s argument made more sense. Reece had accused Anthony of murder, and while Anthony had been put on the back burner, the accusation still lingered in the back of his mind. When Alissa brought up the fact that she was dating Reece’s ex, Anthony had to suppress a smirk. It was funny to watch Reece get worked up like this, even though he knew he shouldn’t find amusement in their drama. He watched as Reece huffed and puffed, and was grateful that the argument was ending…?
But when Alissa revealed that she was gay, Anthony was surprised. It was 2001, after all, and being openly gay wasn’t as widely accepted. He didn’t even know a queer person. He didn’t know how to react, but he knew that he didn’t want to be seen as intolerant or rude. So he put on a smile and said, “That’s great, Alissa. I’m happy for you.” He whispered, probably only catching the ears of the person next to him. It wasn’t much, but it was better than saying nothing at all.
Anthony’s discomfort turned to anger as he heard Reece’s derogatory words about Dior. He wanted to speak up and defend her, but he knew it would only earn him Reece’s ire. Instead, he glared at Reece and shook his head in disbelief.
The more Reece spoke, the more Anthony felt a pit in his stomach. He couldn’t believe that someone could be so callous and cruel towards another person. The fact that Reece and his friends had used Dior only made Anthony dislike them even more. When Reece mentioned that Dior had only dated him to make Chase jealous, Anthony wanted to roll his eyes. It was clear that Reece was just trying to make himself sound better by blaming Dior for everything. In reality, it was Reece and his friends who had used Dior for their own gain.
Anthony sat nervously in detention, two other students who had already spoken up about their secrets. He knew he had to find the courage to share his own truth, but the words caught in his throat. He thought about his brother Dylan, who had disappeared without a trace eight years ago. Anthony was convinced that something more sinister had happened to him, but he had kept his suspicions to himself until now.
Taking a deep breath, Anthony finally spoke up. “I have something to say too,” he said, his voice shaking slightly. “My brother Dylan disappeared ten years ago, and I think something happened to him that we don’t know about.” The other students looked at him. Encouraged, he continued. “I don’t believe that he was just here one day gone the next with no trace. I think something bad happened to him, and I want to find out what it was.” As he spoke, Anthony felt a weight lifting from his shoulders. He was no longer holding his fears and suspicions inside, and he knew that he was not alone in his concerns. Or, at least his first biggest fear.
