UK Emergency Alarm Test

Many people in the UK will be aware of this already but basically at 2023-04-23T14:00:00Z today, everybodies phone is going to sound an alarm the government is testing for national emergencies.

I’ve been hearing so many divided opinions on this, ranging from it being an “invasion of privacy”, to “a conspiracy the government is hiding from us” I personally think it’s nonsense to call it a conspiracy though.

Anyway here’s more information:

Personally my only thing is that I hope to god my spare phone at uni is out of battery :joy:

So what do we all think of this?

That was well and truly the highlight of my life

Those happen once a year in the Netherlands. Never put too much thought into it, but it’s good that it gets tested so we know it’ll work when it’s actually needed!

Tbh I think because it rarely happens in the UK we all just started making a bigger deal out of it than it actually was

I did NOT know about this and I was in the middle of a nap :sob:

But tbh I always wondered if/when we’d get something like this because I know Japan has them for missile and tsunami warnings and it makes sense with Ukraine and everything

The Canadian emergency alert system is most commonly used for Amber alerts (an Amber alert is issued when a child has been kidnapped)

That’s interesting! The only amber alerts I ever get here in the UK are weather warnings! Bad snow or something

Oh WOW! You guys don’t already have this?

That’s surprising, we’ve had this for years. Not only did we (in New Zealand) have it all through COVID to help announce going into lockdowns and when massive outbreaks occurred, but it’s also used for large earthquake and tsunami warnings. It happens rarely but it’s a great way to get the news faster if you haven’t heard checked the news recently.

Yeah, I feel this is the reason it’s being put into practice for you guys now. Putin is a scary threat!

To be completely fair it’s also for things like floods and fires which do happen in certain areas, the government have said that the alarm can be localised as well as national so while it would alert us of a bomb it would also alert people of nature being nature.

I’m tired of seeing people claim the UK doesn’t get floods (obviously not you Cali, just in general), tell that to areas like Garstang and other places where you can’t buy flood insurance :joy:

Same here for the US.
Though, my family found a way to go into the phone settings to turn the alerts off, so now I don’t even see the alerts

I live in a country where we’ll get this in like 1000 years but I was in America last summer and I got an amber alert on my phone. It was so strange seeing something like that considering where I come from but I like it. I don’t know… It can be a good thing

Oh, yeah, of course. That’s what we use it for too. I was only saying that the reason the government pushed this quickly through to practice now could have been the potential to being in a world war. As scary as that is to say.

That’s ridiculous that people say this, 'cause almost every country (if not all) can flood. I mean, I would have thought the UK would be afflicted more since there is the speculation that it rains most of the year. HAHA

it’s so odd to me that yall don’t have this :sob: here in florida, we have them for basic amber alerts, plus hurricane and rip current warnings

Same here! Except the rip currents.

Valid!

The UK doesn’t really get hurricane’s or natural disasters the same way the US and other places do, we usually only get the tail end of them!

With that said, we definitley should have had something like this before.

Yeah we have the mildest weather. No hurricanes. Barely any bad storms. It’s to the point that we lose our collective minds when we have 40 degree celsius weather or lots of snow. There’s not really been much need!
