Really, Lord of the Rings is what comes to mind for this for me. The languages were developed to reflect the people who used them, which is really cool. I can’t think of a whole lot of books that I’ve read that had particularly good or inspiring world building, unfortunately.
Honestly? The world of the Shadowhunters as created by Cassandra Clare. Her series aren’t the greatest things ever, but even years after reading The Mortal Instruments/The Infernal Devices I still return to the franchise’s Wikia every couple months just to reacquaint myself with the lore for fun There’s just so much - so many generations and names, and tons of Biblical/folklore references (which I personally love) - and it’s inspiring!
@Writers Do you have any stories with great world building that inspired you?
Kito, definitely Loogie’s Kito!
The Illuminae files (the series) has a really good world… Wouldn’t say I love how it’s written but I was obsessed when I first read it.
There’s also this other book I’m reading and I really love how it’s written! It’s called Blue Ticket and it’s about a society where if you’re a woman and you get a white ticket you’re meant to be a mom and have kids and if you get a blue ticket you can’t and that’s basically law… I love the style it’s written in and even tho I’m not done so far it has a pretty good world.
The author doesn’t do the thing I hate which is have a big blurb of explanation… It’s kinda slowly explained through a lot of imagery.
DND and Pathfinder.
Six of Crows.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has a neat world-building for me. However, it sucks to be in that world if you’re not a bender, but the concept of bending elements is still amazing and I like how each bending discipline is related to a real-life martial art. To make things better, the bending can be explained by Science.
I just hate how this amazing world-building was butchered in the The Legend of Korra. There were a lot of inconsistencies, and it broke a lot of lores in the previous series.
I second, third, fourth and fifth this statement
And I’m going to add Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood to this since ngl I really liked the way the whole area in the story actually played a large role in the plot but then again I’m adding FMA brotherhood to all my lists of inspiration.
And I discovered that because of Loogie too so clearly he’s just a radlad.
