Where I’m from, it’s not common that people live on campus or move out of home for college/university. I lived at home so I ate whatever my mum cooked
First time I moved out of home and had expensive rent to pay, I already had fairly healthy habits so I’d just buy basics and meal prep for the week. Chicken breast and rice isn’t expensive.
Recently I went on a college trip.
I mostly ate chicken sandwiches, fries, pizza, ice cream, eggs, French toast/pancakes, fruit salad, salad, milk (soymilk because of my lactose intolerance), brownies and cookies, and soda.
I kid you not: I went back home, and one of the first things I told my mom was how much I missed the food at home.
The staff and I literally made like 7 threads just so one could be made.
So yes. Yes there is.
College started right lol
My roommate worked at Starbucks, so she’d bring home pastries and things that expired that day and we ate those. When we had some extra cash, we went to this Thai place. We were regulars. Tip knew us and we knew Tip and her staff ^^ Good times.
Also, before that, when I was struggling less, I cooked for all my mates and hosted parties where we played video games and ate amazing Sicilian food. Ah, college…somewhat good times.
I am usually surving on easy but fresh and homemade food like simple pasta’s, curries or simple Mexican food. Really affordable especially if you cook 3 or 4 portions at one time it’s nice and saves quite a lot of time on the longer term since I have a freezer full with leftovers

I think I’ll be running back home during holidays if I live on college food.
I can’t cook sadly…
Does/did anyone eat at a dining hall, or cook their own food?
Well not in college. In high school yes but college is at the house since I’m in online classes. Other than that, home cooked meals.
I lived with my mom and cooked most of my own meals because during that time, my mom couldn’t eat a lot of foods so we cooked two separate meals.
Now, DURING school hours, I’d usually eat in the campus cafe instead of going to buy something outside because they only gave us 30 minutes for lunch, so almost everything outside was either too far away or too expensive. Usually, I’d eat soups in the campus cafe because they made a different soup every day and they were usually pretty good.
I don’t go to university yet but I’m really happy to be staying at home where Mummy dearest can make my food ngl people get aggressive with me when they find out my Mum makes my food they’re all like “help her out it’s not fair that she feeds you”
They don’t seem to understand that she wants to do it. She loves cooking because when she was younger it was her escape, she could just go into the kitchen and cook. She likes doing that, I am so grateful that she does and I make it as easy for her as I can (I don’t ask for specific things she just surprises me when I get home)
If you guys had the option to have cooking from home at uni then would you?
