What makes someone a writer?

I think this is a rather interesting question so I’d like to hear your opinions! For many other professions, there are certain qualifications or even certificates you need to have before you can call yourself that, but there’s nothing like that for being a writer  So what does someone have to do to be seen as a writer? And according to that definition, are you a writer?

Someone that is very passionate about writing. You know, constantly writing:

  • Stories
  • Diary/Journal entries
  • Emailing
  • Planning & researching for their novels

The list goes on. Basically, someone that expands their creativity.

Writing makes you a writer :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I know way too many people who spend more time talking about how they’re a writer than they do actually writing :joy:

Someone who writes is a writer.:white_heart:

I didn’t think defining what a writer was would be so simple.

Yes, completely agree. You have to write to call yourself a writer. It doesn’t matter how insignificant, small, or poor you think the writing is, you’re still writing. That is what makes you a writer and all types of writing helps a person to practice their skill.

As long as you write stories/poetry/etc., you’re a writer to me. Even if no one else sees your writing, or you never even finished a chapter before in your life, I consider you to be a writer

Somebody who enjoys writing and puts value into what they are writing, whether it be a songwriter, an author who published a book or someone who writes fan fiction on wattpad or even someone who’s writing a 1000 worded essay for school. Even if they wote it as a joke or for fun or even school , If the enjoy it, I would consider them a witer.:page_facing_up:

Someone who actually writes. They don’t have to do it professionally nor have any of their writings published, as long as they’re writing SOMETHING and practicing the skill.

For me, writing something regularly and voluntarily makes you a writer. If you’ve written one essay in the past and it was for school, I wouldn’t consider you a writer. I think it has something to do with how much passion you put into it

I think that calling someone a writer or especially calling myself a writer would mean that writing was an important part of your life. It doesn’t matter about the quality or amount of writing, as long as it means something to that person. If it’s just an essay for school, I probably wouldn’t use that to justify calling someone an author, but if the same essay was revised and submitted to journals and contests and was important to the author, then I would call them a writer.
