The renaissance, according to the internet because I suck at history , the renaissance was a period that lasted from the 1300s to the 1700s, and was rich with (european) cultural and economic advances.
There were huge amounts of scientific discoveries, as well as a number of famous artists, including:
Sofonisba Anguissola
Michelangelo
Donatello
European kingdoms and empires expanded greatly throughout this period, to the advantage of the rich and white, and the disadvantage of everyone else.
The Black death occurred during these years, as well as a number of wars and the like.
Ok so I’m terrible at history, so I’ll let you guys take the reins from here.
What do you think about the Renaissance period?
What are your favourite/least favourite parts of this period?
if you had the chance, would you travel back in time to visit/see this period?
Do you have any additional fun facts about this period
Feel free to add any discussion points of your own about this topic
i had no idea the teenage mutant ninja turtles were so old
anyway i mainly associate it with the death of medieval style art and that is very sad. where else am i going to find nightmare fuel? I used to know more about it but my knowledge on all subjects has been slowly deteriorating over the past half-decade or so
owo!
other remarkable artists (using the word very loosely) who lived through that period include:
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)
sculptor, made an Apollo and Daphne sculpture that shows the process of Daphne becoming a tree based on the angle you look at it
Christine de Pisan (1364-1430)
the first female professional writer! her most important books are about a “city of ladies” and her works are still very important to feminist literature
Lope de Vega (1562-1635)
a spanish poet and playwright! he changed the way theatre was regarded and produced in Spain back then with his Arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543)
not an artist but he’s the man who finally cemented heliocentrism after centuries of debates and problems about this, so he deserves a special mention
tho, ngl, i consider Bernini be a more baroque era sculptor and de Pisan a medieval writer, given when they lived, but that’s bc dates are weird and one cannot be completely sure when a period started, more so when different countries advance at different speeds (for example, Spanish lit was going through the “golden century” through some of those years)
honestly, as much as it pains me, i ADORE this era
it brought so many changes and progress and a lot of people i admire (Pisan, Lope, Da Vinci) lived through it
it fascinates me how it’s an era of pushing the limits, of anthropocentrism and seeing just how far humans can go
also i’m just a nerd who wants to learn anything and everything, so the idea of the “Renaissance Man” is very appealing to me
well first there’s the… hygene issues lmao
also the fact that society was not nearly as accepting as it was (see: da Vinci getting in trouble for being a “sodomite”)
most definitely, yes
it’s be so cool honestly
during that era the ideal was the “Renaissance Man” aka being a polymath, so people were encouraged to learn about many disciplines instead of getting stuck in one
however, that meant a lot of their knowledge in most fields could be shallow unless they were super studious
