What's the best/worst way to end a story?

We’ve talked a lot about how to start a story but we never discussed the ending of a story, which in my opinion is just as important as the beginning. :eyes::sparkles:

So what’s the best way to end a story in your opinion?
And what’s the worst way to end a story?
How do you usually end your stories?

The best way? Full circle, surprise and cliffhanger endings.

Worst? “Happily ever after.”

The way I end mine: often tragic endings. Or semi-happy endings with tragedy.

Best: surprise endings, happily ever afters
Worst: cliffhanger endings
How I end mine: I try to make surprise endings, but it often turns into a happily ever after

What would be a cliche ending in your eyes? The happily ever after ending or something else?:green_heart::sweat_smile::eyes::sparkles:

Wrapping up all the plots but leaving enough left unsolved that you could write a sequel if you wanted to

By cliche I mean predictable. An ending that everyone saw coming. That’s boring in my opinion

I think that a predictable ending can be good too if it’s well written and makes sense… I haven’t read a book with an unpredictable ending for years now :no_mouth::green_heart::eyes::sparkles:

True! It all depends on the writer.

MC ends up with the bad boy. They kiss/get married. :white_heart:

Ending a story is the hardest thing for me because I never know how I want my stories to end.
I don’t like sad endings but getting married and having kids isn’t an option for every story, either. Maybe a more open ending that’s not sad but not a fairy tale ending, either.
