I’ve heard a lot, and I mean A LOT of people rejecting all criticism they or another artist are getting by saying “tHaT’s JuSt ThE sTyLe” which is incredibely stupind and ignorant because: 1.It doesn’t matter. You can hate a style of drawing. Someone’s style can look absolutely horrific, it’s really not an excuse. and 2. This will probably sound incredibly harsh, but style is a lot of times just an excuse that beginner artists use to justify bad art. Every single time I take an art class there’s gotta be some 11-15yo that’ll be like “oh no, I shouldn’t make the legs look like actuall legs, that wouldn’t be true to my artstyle!” And I can’t help but think “What art style? You literally started drawing a week ago!”. Now I just realized how mean I sound but idk I just wish artists would focus more on how it’s normal for your art to suck when you first start out/practice>magic, not on creating a singular unique style
I moved this to art because I think that’s the best category for it and added some tags for you
I think that something being your style is a fair response in some cases, since some critiques are just bad. “It looks too cartoony,” for instance, doesn’t provide feedback in the same way that “the leg proportions are unnerving” does.
Yeah, I think style should be used more as “I was going for a more cartooney/realistic style” instead of “ThIs Is JuSt My StyLe, HaTeR”
I agree with this. If you make a mistake while making art and you don’t bother cleaning it up then someone points out the error, you should be able to tell them “it’s fine I like it that way” or “Thank you, I’ll redo it” rather than just saying “iT’s JuSt My StyLE”
I think that it depends on what you criticise and if the artist did that on purpose or is just unskilled…
If you for example criticised that my art has thick black outlines or that the animals’ eyes are always too big, it would be a valid reply to say that it’s my style, because I did it on purpose, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t say that you dislike how it looks.
I hate it when people use that excuse for not learning how to draw something, especially when an assignment requires you to do it that way… A person shouldn’t be afraid of trying something new just because it doesn’t “fit their style”, especially if they’re still beginners and their art style will still change a lot.
Have you ever used “that’s just my style” as an excuse when someone criticized your art?
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT!
I genuinely thought I was alone on thinking this lol.
