Worldbuilding and Brainstorming Help

Hey everybody!

I’ve been working on some writing projects, and keep running into situations where I can’t figure out the little details, such as character names, place names, etc. Basically all the little pieces that you can get away without knowing for a while, but the further you go along, the more you know you need those details to really make the world feel more real, and so that way those loose threads can finally be tied up and stop bothering you.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that struggles with this, so I thought it’d be helpful to have somewhere all of us could come to for help with all of the details that come into worldbuilding!

Two of the things I’m sort of stuck on most right now is the surname of my main character for a story I’m writing, and the name of the kingdom it takes place in.

The story takes place in a fantasy world where all the characters are living in a kingdom full of both magical and non-magical humans. However, this kingdom has been dealing with constant turmoil with outbreaks of rebel activity, because of the people that were essentially absorbed into this kingdom when their former kingdom was conquered some generations ago.
As this is the place where the entire story takes place, and one of the characters is the heir to the throne (and later on the king) of this kingdom, I really need a name for it, but I’m completely stuck with no ideas on this part.

As for my main character, her first name is Lyra, and I had a list of possible names I was considering, but I’m not 100% certain on any of them. Especially now that I have the first names for her parents, and none of them seem to fit well. (At this point I’m even questioning her first name because of it )

List of surname ideas for her/her family that I’d previously had, but don’t know that any of them fit well
  • Aylward
  • Moone
  • Belrose or Bellerose (either spelling variation)
  • Sylvian
  • Dawn

Ideally, I hoped that her surname would connect in some way to her family’s background, like with name meanings potentially, but I’m just lost at this point.

Lyra’s family background

Lyra is the only child in her family, born to two fathers. (Both biological with no biological mother. Its possible in this world through magic and the help of a surrogate)
Her fathers met when they were in school at the magic academy that all magic users attend when they’re 18 until they’re around 23 (the exact ages are still being tweaked slightly as I’m finalizing how many years the characters attend that school/age, but roughly college age, with legal adulthood being at age 20 instead of 18) then later married and had Lyra.
Lyra is orphaned as a result of rebellion activity when she was about 13, but before their deaths, one of Lyra’s fathers, Alden was a professor at the magic academy and known for being not only highly intelligent in general, but absolutely brilliant in his fields of research. While her other father, Caelum was more of the support figure, possibly stay-at-home dad type, but also a highly protective person. He had also become a werewolf as an adult, while Lyra was young.

I’ve sort of been envisioning the name having some sort of celestial (particularly the moon for its relevance to one of her fathers) or nature connection. Nature potentially because Lyra’s most skilled in magic with making plants grow and stuff like that.

I’ve also considered her having a hyphenated surname, to have come from both of her parents instead of her name just having been from one or the other, but again, I don’t even have one surname figured out, let alone one for each parent.

Thanks Cali!

And for everyone else, even though I’m struggling myself , I’m also here to help anyone else who needs it too!

Lol I had a RP character for Ninth House who was also called Lyra and is most skilled in that type of magic

But yeah these little details can be really tough sometimes. If I don’t have any inspiration sometimes I use random generators for this stuff and keep trying and trying until I get across something I like but yeah often I stay a little unsure about those details until I just decide to pick one and fully commit to it I guess

Hm out of those I think I like Lyra Aylward the most but it feels like such a tongue twister
If it we’re me I might go for something else, find more surnames and sound it out with her name (and her parents)

This is kinda why I’m at this point even considering changing her first name.
Lyra might be too used of a name.

Aylward was one of the first on my list, but I definitely agree that it does feel like a bit of a tongue twister

Yeah, that’s kinda why I’m slightly against the ones I had on my list. Cause sounding them out, none of them really fit with her name (or her parents’ names) as well as I’d like.

I may need to switch her first name to find something that flows well  sigh

Also I’ve been thinking, and was kinda thinking that Lyra may be too common of a name, and never sounded right with any surname I liked, so would either of these names sound like a good name for my main character instead of Lyra?

  • Kalina
  • Catalina

I’m leaning towards Kalina I think, but I’m not 100% certain on it.

Which name sounds better for a god of death?
This would be to go with a goddess of life called Vitana.
