Putting this question in a Hidden Box for trigger warning conversation about depression.

Question and Response

How to write a character who is suffering from depression (please blur that word if necessary)?
Best way to write about depression is doing research on people with depression. There are many ariticles that go over the proper way to write about sensitive topics like this one in a book. You need to be careful about how you write about the depressive moments because it can come off like another mental disorder which would then become misinformation and insult to those who do have depression. Since, I was recently this year diagnosed with depression I can give you my thoughts on the how it feels to be depressed. I will also link so articles that will help you out a bit more. Depression sneaks up on you when you least expect it. I thought I was tired of working at my work place. I had endured verbal abuse from the assistant manager in the deli for almost a year which downspiraled me into depression. I started to lose focus on what I was doing. I kept pushing things off because I didn’t feel like I could do it. It made me feel like I didn’t want to be there anymore. I had honestly gotten to the point of quitting my job on multiple occaissions because of I was so low. The days were bleeding into one another most of the time. I finally decided to go my doctor to see if I was really depressed or just needed to get back on my ADD meds. I took the test which put me on the higher end of the test results. I have been on my medicine since this past February/March this year. It’s helped me get back to where I was when I first started at my job. I don’t feel like quitting anymore but I did end up transferring departments to get away from the assistant manager.

Another trigger warning topic about abuse, suicide, and PTSD.

Question and Response

I need some advice on how to properly write scenes where my MC, Annas trauma from being abused and watching her moms suicide are shown
Alright, you are covering about three different topics that will need to be researched in order to write the story. I would follow the links I link to this question so that you can properly write Anna’s story. I know some about being verbably abused by a my assistant manager of the deli when I worked in that department. He would get really mad at me which drove me into a really low spot because he was in a higher position than me. I felt like I couldn’t do anything about it. He has anermanage issues that really need to be looked into. Then he would say some snide remarks about the little things such as finding the keys to the compost. He made me cry many nights in a row when I would get home. I will need to say this though do not cut corners when it comes to going over these points in the story. I would suggest looking at #32’s answer about the depression part which is common for those who have seen family members die or even been abused by someone. This is a very hard subject to write on so please be careful when doing so.

Hello! Two questions. First, I need a character to be exposed to radioactive material to gain powers. I dont want the plant to explode, because I just want them to be affected. Second, what do you think of a story about a active shooter in a hospital being stopped when the shooter goes into the MRI room and the technician hiding there turns on the machine?

Question One Answer

Alright, for this one there are two ways this could work. One, have the character enter into the area closes to the radiation vessel. The first link below tells you about the different plants that have malfunctioned throughout the history of Nuclear power. I would look up the Fukushima Power Plant meltdown since it was caused by a tsunami rather than an explosion as a model for your story. If you don’t want to right anything that goes over an explosion then I would suggest you write about the radiation starts leaking from the vessel due to a faulty valve or concealing mechanism. The character would need to be closer to the area where this faulty equipment. You could even have a small meltdown where the reactors start overheating which caused the radiation to slip through the compromised structure which your character would be in direct line of the radiation. Once they get the plant back to a safe point your character will be taken to the decontamination building but the radiation has already changed the character by then but the character doesn’t notice anything until days later. You can have the character get a really sick feeling when the meltdown happens. The second link is so that you can get an understanding of how a nuclear plant looks like. I hope this helps!

Question Two Answer

Note that the MRI machine is always on in the room. It just depends on how high the power in the room is. This story is plausible but I would definitely look at the link I’m putting below. It goes over what can be brought into an MRI room and what to not bring into an MRI room. When it comes to writing this scene the dramatic parts are up to you. Just try to make the story seem realistic otherwise it will become cheesy in a sense.

By the way, everyone can answer these questions! It’s best to get advice from multiple people versus one person only.

Im working on a story that I had originally started writing on Wattpad, but Im also writing it on Episode.
And I also want to totally revamp a story that I released on Episode during a contest, but with a lot of changes. For example, Ive decided to included a YOU character for the reader to be.
But my previous plot was about five women being chosen to write for a storytelling app and having to work together on a single story. It kind of flopped, to be honest, and there are some storylines that I want to omit altogether.
Now, I want to have all of them be teens in school, but theyd be working as a team on a project in creative writing or literature class.
I dont really know what direction to take it in... like, what will motivate them to want to win this writing contest? Will there be different prizes that appeals to each one of the girls? Or what would you suggest?

I totally understand wanting to revamp a story that flopped. I really do hope this story works out better for you. I would suggest making the girls in their senior year. You can set up the contest as something the school does for seniors to get them ready for college. This contest could offer a multitude of prizes such as a scholarship to a creative arts school, a book label offer from a renowned publishing company, and other prizes like that. I do think you should definitely make the prizes catered to the girl’s goals so that way they are striving for something important to them. Their motivation can come from their backgrounds they are from. For instance, one girl could be the only guardian for her siblings but she still needs to go through school to take better care of them. That would be the scholarship one. Another could be that everyone said she wasn’t good at writing so she finally wanted to prove to everyone that she was more than just a pretty face. I know it’s cliche but if you write them correctly then it should work out well. Those would be the type of situations for people to have when trying to get to a goal. Now, about the You character, this is one way to go about it but I’m not really good with giving tips about this writing method but I will link some articles to help you. Just remember when writing from this perspective you will be limited in certain grammar structures for that one character. It’s not impossible to do but it can be taxing so I really hope this helps you out. If you need further help then please pm me about it. I would also suggest reading the Choice of Games stories from your app store/google play store. They are writing from the aspect of the reader’s perspective which can give a more clear idea of how to write those particular types of stories.

what is the best way to start in a murder mystery story?

The best way to start a murder mystery story is to plan out the story before hand. You’ll want to layout all the ways the murder could of gone then from there choose which one sounds like the right way to go. Now, I’m not meaning plan the entire story plot in one go. You need to pick the direction you want the story to go in. Do you want to make this a horror story? Thriller? Fantasy? Those should be the first part to go over. Then from there plot out how the murder happens then start bringing in the characters. Research the location you are basing the story in unless it’s a fictional place. That would call for world building which is another whole subject on it’s own. Basically, plan the story in intervals with cliffhangers that keep the reader interested. Like for instance, foreshadow the murder with clues in the story so that it comes together more smoothly. The best murder stories always start off with the murder during the start of the novel. Definitely read Women’s Murder Club from James Patterson for murder mystery stories or any thrillers by Stephen King for an horror aspect. Here are some links to look at.

Im having a bit of a dilemma. This is probably gonna require a bit of a backstory. So theres this story that was legit the first story Ive ever written/sorta completed. (Basically I wrote one "book" and was gonna write the next one but didnt end up getting to it) I love it so much but it has so many flaws... and Ive tried to re-write it many times. So this time of re-writing Im doing it on Episode. And heres the thing, Ive loved writing it and have been proud of the episodes Ive made but I dont think its good. There are clear errors because there were periods of time where Id stop writing for months and then Id go back and continue to write. So now I dont know whether to keep going or start over. I mean, it is just a passion project that I dont want to put a ton of effort into... but I dont want to read it and cringe because of the mistakes. I also dont know if I should publish this. I really want to publish this to show off my work and all the effort Ive put into this- even if it isnt that great. But I guess Im afraid of what people will think of it. I want to make it just for me because it was my first story ever and I want to re-make it but I also want to publish it to show it off... So... should I rewrite it? But also should I publish it?
I say go for it! I get you might not want to put a lot of effort into going over the story but it will be worth it. You are already in a good spot where you notice your own mistakes which need to be fixed. If you don’t finish revamping this story then it’s just going to gnaw at you the rest of your life. Don’t give up on working on this story. Criticism is the always needed when it comes to improving stories you are revamping. Don’t worry about people being negative but also make sure you can tell the difference between negative responses and criticism though. I think you should publish the story when you feel ready to do so. If you need more help just pm me or even go to my Prompt Class 2.0 thread for more hands on help. I’m in the same boat right now. I’m trying to revamp one story while working on another story but I feel like giving up but I know I shouldn’t do so. You can accomplishe this I assure you!

I need help making a character with autism. Help?
The only advice I can give you is to do a research plus look at the articles I post below. @Ouijaloveletters might be able to give more advice on this I think. The last thing you want to do is write about this disorder in the wrong way. It also depends on what level of the spectrum your character is going to be on.
