“If I’m being honest, I look forward to our moments like this. I can’t wait to have many more with you Helen.” Helen’s breath caught slightly in her chest as she met his gaze, a spark of surprise igniting in her belly. She could feel her cheeks warm under the fluttering glow of the fairy lights strung overhead and the soft shadows of dusk settling around them. “You do?” she managed, her voice barely above a whisper, laced with a mix of disbelief and delight.
Helen’s heart fluttered at his words, but a frown creased her brow briefly as she tried to recall the event he mentioned. Which one had that been? So many nights blurred together under the lights of galas and fundraisers, each filled with countless conversations and fleeting moments. Helen blinked, her cheeks warming, but she brushed away the slight embarrassment with a wave of her hand. Helen chuckled softly, both flattered and unsure. “You’re too kind. But I think we should probably make our entrance before people start wondering where we’ve vanished to.” Helen said, already pulling Tommy away from the railing. In all honesty, she needed his attention off solely her while she tried to figure out what she was feeling. Was it fair to develop these feelings for Tommy when her heart was still tied up in facades? Did she risk complicating her professional relationship with him if she let her guard down?
