Zion Pestana
After Daniel left, Zion froze in their seat, filled with fear for their parents. Once they snapped back to reality, they stood up and ran out of the hall, pulling their phone out of their pocket. They dialled their home phone number, pacing back and forth as they waited for someone to pick up. As soon as they heard their mom’s voice on the other end, they breathed a sigh of relief. “Mami, necesito de me eschuches.” They told her, trying to keep their voice calm.
“Por qué?”
“No hay tiempo para explicar. Empacar lo que puedas e ir a casa de la tía Lucinda.” They informed her, knowing that Lucinda, who had always been a close friend of their family, would shelter their parents until it was safe for them to return to their house.
“Zion, qué pasa?”
“Mami, por favor, sólo hazlo. Me encargaré de Christian. Tú y papi tienen que irse.” They pleaded. When she finally agreed, they told her they loved her and that she should text them once they arrived at Lucinda’s. Saying goodbye to their mother, they hung up their phone. They crouched down as tears began to fall from their eyes, the fear and uncertainty overwhelming them. Remembering where they are, they stood up and moved themself to a bench. Turning their phone back on, they texted their brother to tell him not to worry if their parents weren’t in the house when he came back from dance and that they’d explain everything to him when they got home. When they’d finished texting him, they leaned their head back, silently cursing themself for putting their family in this position.
