She closed the door behind her shut and pressed her back against the wall hearing a soft thud. Safiya took a deep breath, not enjoying the reminder of what was going on outside sent by the muffled music playing in the background, in…
out…
She wasn’t going to let her anxiety ruin her fun. She was just going to go back, and continue. People shouldn’t bother you! The voice in her head said frantically. The best thing for her to do would probably be to take a minute in there, but she didn’t know any better than to just push herself a little more. It wasn’t terrifying, it wasn’t that bad at that point in her life.
She put her hand on the door knob, turning it ever so slightly- I can’t.
Safiya sat down on the floor, snuggled into her jacket, sitting with her knees up to her chin. She slid her phone out of her pocket, little box glowing artificial light that tinted her face blue when she pressed the home button. She swiped and clicked a game icon with an awkward look. She felt bad for taking up the bathroom, so it took longer for her to forget why she was in there. But after a little bit of chilling down, she was comfortable with the muffled music, and had the courage to walk back out.
W-ooo She went, focusing on the party as a whole, She looked around and spotted Elodie chatting and Saf smiled shyly. Everyone seemed busy except those in the pool. “Hey guys!” She saluted to a group of familiar faces at the edge of the pool. She looked for a big space to get in, walking by the side of the pool until she found this little space where she just managed to jump in without splashing anybody too hard. Fiya unzipped her jacket and pulled down the sleeves, tossing it on the cement and then she jumped in fast, hitting the water a little bit hard. It was cold, but she didn’t act fazed and opened her arms out gracefully, swimming a short distance to tap somebody on the shoulder with a happy smile. She didn’t bring swimwear underneath her outfit but the water is the only place where she wanted to be. But she did not just soak herself to be alone.
She didn’t care about getting in trouble at home. BUT JUST THEN- The universe saved her ass. and everyone heard a big blaring sound. They were first alarmed, turning heads searched for where it came from but then the ceiling sprinklers started spinning and showering everyone. They were all shook, feeling icky and some people, offended by the rotating water gun above them. Safiya’s jaw dropped. They all followed eachother out of the pool, the party was over.
She picked up her jacket and wrapped it around her as quickly as possible. And with her belongings she jogged out to her car, when the roof was no longer overhead, the warmth off the water stopped and she felt the sudden cold. Goosebumps formed on her skin and she put more pep in her step, diligently working to GET TO HER D*MN CAR. she laid her jacket inside out on the driver’s seat in a manageable way. And placed her tush on the seat like a lady to not bunch it up. The door closed, and she shivered, putting the key in and turning the heat on in the meantime before her brother made it. And she sat there… for a while. She looked like a wet dog. A sad, socially anxious, wet dog. Looking out at the house, offering light beneath the empty sky. You could still hear chatter. Some of it comprehensible, sometimes unexpected. Things you can tell that Safiya could have gone on without knowing in her face where her eyebrows catapulted into space. She gripped the wheel and leaned her head in, “It’d only be a little longer”, she told herself, tightening her jaw at the end of word.
The Next Dae
Safiya woke up to the sound of her alarm in the morning and got up to go through her usual routine. She loved that feeling, routine. It is something that she has been taught to adore. She got up wearing a big baggy yellow t shirt and grey pajama shorts, one of those kinds that don’t really have a classification because you can use them for anything if you put your mind to it. Plain Neutral and Afforable. She went down for breakfast, reaching up into her cabinet for a cereal bowl like a stubborn little midget. Cornflakes at the table, looking at Mamoud.
He never showed up to her car, which she was still pretty upset about honestly, he scared her to death! Her big brother, nowhere to be found! He did send a text, but it he didn’t see that it didn’t send. He gave all of his f*cks to her. She got home in quiet tears, and when she saw him she was just grateful that he was fine, she forgave him with puppy dog eyes. He apologized, and they made up like they do. And everything was back to normal between them, but with her PARENTS?!?! shortys were shrucked.
Her dad yelled for the longest time. It was…fine though, she slid on her backpack in the morning and hopped in the car to drive to school! She was overthinking this day alot, she always gets first day jitters, wondering who she’ll meet, if her teachers are good, and the list goes on. She showed up to the entrance and it was early morning. The sun was rising and the school still wasn’t open so all the kids waited outside, Mamoud didn’t want to talk to anyone but she did so he let her go on my merry way up to this girl standing all by herself, her name was Valerie. Fiya held her first period books in hand already because she wanted to be and over achiever so she looked a little bit nerdy coming up to her. “Hi!” She said to her sweetly.
