It had been a guess by him that Daniel had something to do with it, as he’d seen the two of them together before Zion had run off, but their subtle confirmation was no surprise to him. He watched them wipe the tears from their eyes, concern etching itself further into his expression. What Zion revealed though, this, he hadn’t expected.
Lui hadn’t known officially that their parents weren’t legal immigrants, but his face didn’t betray any surprise. It wasn’t an impossible thought or anything, it just was not something that he would spend any time thinking about. And it wasn’t something that you would just bring up in most conversations either. American immigration laws were strict though, so he definitely understood it, and he was always someone who leaned in favour of the immigrants and not ICE, never ICE.
Although Aline was friends with him, Lui never liked Daniel much, but even he didn’t think he’d stoop so low as to call immigration on their parents. There was nothing Zion would’ve done to him for this to be an appropriate reaction. This was something that would have permanent repercussions, it wasn’t just some reveal of someone cheating on their partner. This was serious; they could be deported. He couldn’t understand how anybody could do anything like that to anyone… Luciano wanted to see what Aline saw in him, but it was looking a lot like Daniel was nothing more than just a privileged white boy who did whatever the f-ck he wanted without regard for anyone. It was f-cking maddening how people like him had all of this power over people like Zion and him, how it was either grovel for forgiveness or face the consequences.
If Aline was still any sort of amicable towards him after this, then wow, she wasn’t the person he had known her to be.
“No, I’m glad you told me,” he said at the end of Zion’s ramblings. “But Zion… God, lo siento.” He paused, turning his body so he was angled towards them more. “Sé que tienes miedo, esta es una situación aterradora, pero estoy aquí para ti," he started in Spanish, as it was both of their first languages and it was a bit easier to converse in. " Lo que sea que necesite, lo conseguiremos. Un abogado, lo que sea. Y con Christian …” He let out a breath, looking into their eyes to let them know he was being serious. “No vamos a dejar que se lo lleven, ¿de acuerdo? Te lo prometo.” If this was his family, he would be feeling the exact same towards his sisters, so he was going to do everything in his power to prevent Christian from being taken by social workers. He just wasn’t entirely sure how, is the thing. They’d probably just have to find a guardian for him or something. He was sure that Zion had some other family in the US who could take him in, they just needed to be over eighteen. Wait.
He looked back up at them, realization dawning. “Z, you’re eighteen now, you’re an adult. You could adopt him, or whatever it’s called, like become his parent, legally. And if not that, then maybe another one of your family members could gain custody of him.”
