“Well you did say you had an essay to go write, and there was a guy you were trying to avoid…”
And so he was smart too. She lifted her eyebrow at the words, a slight smile on her lips as she took a drink of her water. Most guys she’s been on a date with would have forgotten everything she had said during their brief interaction. “Guess you caught me, but I rather enjoy getting to know you without the supposed references. It keeps the mystery alive,” Jess joked. "Still can’t promise my references would give you a good recommendation though, " Jess added. It was true - most people at that school still hated her. There were only a few people who would say anything good at this point and she could count those on her fingers. Andy, Dan, Jezebel, Mikel. Hell. She could count them on one hand.
Though the smile stayed as the two talked about their siblings. God, she missed them. If it wasn’t for the camping trip, she’d probably skip school and go visit them the next day - with no care in the world. Though… she had her reasons for coming. That conversation with her little siblings was probably the most difficult - them begging her to stay. After all, she was probably the only family member the two saw consistently. Mum and Dad were always busy, going to conferences, charity functions, and anything else on their plate. Anna just… was another story. She didn’t think Anna had a conversation with the twins for longer than a few minutes every year at holidays.
The only people those two saw consistently was the nanny and her. “Yeah… I just don’t get to see them as much recently too so I just had to pick up… if that makes sense?” Jess replied to him explaining that he understood. Though the slight sad smile that reached her lips in an instant when he mentioned Jigsaw, getting the reference she had thrown in there. Agreeing to play her game as they looked around the room. A grin on her features as he agreed with her about the older couple. She watched as the two looked at each other, their hands intertwined as they looked at each other lovingly. Catching the waiter walking by, Jess pointed towards the table. “Hey, do you mind if we send over some dessert and wine to that table? Maybe a Tiramisu and a bottle of Château Bordeaux? Don’t tell them who it’s from and let them get anything else they’d like. And can I also get their cheque after they’re done? It’s on me.” Jess asked the waiter who, though surprised, nodded and after a few moments brought the couple what Jess had ordered. A smile on her features as the couple seemingly first tried to tell the waiter that they hadn’t ordered that, but soon followed by genuine happiness as they fed each other the dessert. The waiter had soon made his way back to her and told both Jess and Kai that the two wanted to express their gratitude.
Though in the midst of all of that, Jess had brought her head to the younger couple they were discussing, Kai adding that it was the waitress that was actually flirting with him. “You think so?” Jess asked, though a minute later when the waitress returned to their table, she saw the woman leaning over the table near the guy and raised an eyebrow at the scene. “I think you may be right, Kai” Jess added. “Alright, fine, how about we do someone a little harder?” Jess asked, “12 o clock, guy in the blue suit,” Jess asked, looking at the man’s table. From what she could tell, the man looked young - though most of his face was covered by the menu that the man was staring at far too long. “I’m going to say… he works on wall street and had a conference here. Probably waiting for a business partner or something but he’s… hmm… worried about his job.” Jess stated, “It does not take that long to read a menu, maybe he’s so nervous he’s reading it over and over again without actually reading it?” Jess mumbled, though still couldn’t see his face.
Though soon, the food had arrived, distracting her from the man. Though in moving to grab her utensils, Jess accidentally brushed Kai’s hand, watching as he jolted away - causing her to pause for a second. After a second, a slight sigh left her mouth. “Kai you honestly seem like you’re uncomfortable…” She started. “I don’t know if it’s me, or this atmosphere but…” Jess started, “How about this. I’m going to give you two options. One, I can end your misery here and we can go our separate ways or two, I’m going to need you to trust me for the next hour and go along with what I say,” Jess mentioned, looking him into his eyes trying to figure out which one he was going to choose.
