Discussion: eating vegetarian

Ahh, nice, personally I don’t really like fish but it’s nice to see someone who eats pescatarian. And I understand that about not being able to go fully vegetarian as in eating no meat.

Anytime!

Yeah, I think you do have to be a bit while restaurants catch up with the times! And I hate being “difficult” or “picky” so I think a certain amount of flexibility is good!

I’m going vegetarian for a week to see what it feels like, and I wonder if it actually helps.

So I’m just gonna lurk this thread :eyes:

I know you’re probably not pescatarian but trust me, I find it enjoyable to eat fish & seafood. My favourites are:

  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • King prawn (shrimp)
  • Calamari
  • Squid
  • Mussels
  • Lobster
  • Imitation crabs

Hehe now I know what to buy when I go to the supermarket.

When people tell me they are vegetarian I just say “cool” then make sure they have plenty of options when we go out for food

@BrutallyBritish forgot to reply to you  I had tuna, I liked it but stopped eating it since I heard a lot about it being in danger cause there are not a lot of them anymore. I only ate salmon once and it was good, but too good to be able to make myself… And about calamari I only like it fried like this, basically when it’s not recognizable :grimacing:

Ooo I love this thread!

i’m totally not biased tho

Yes I eat vegetarian

  • How did you first started eating vegetarian?
I started eating vegetarian (actually vegan but skgjens) by just bluntly cutting off meat lol.

  • When did you first start eating vegetarian?

I became vegetarian/vegan 7 mouths ago!

  • Why did you first start eating vegetarian?

I did it because my mom watched a documentary on how eating animal products effects our bodies so she wanted to go vegan for a month. I had always wanted to go vegan so when my mom said that, I knew mine was gonna last longer than a month.

I have wanted to be vegetarian/vegan because of what’s happening with the planet, but also because I have eczema, (a skin problem that makes parts of your skin, dry, red, itchy, low key scaly, and ruff.) and it flares up when I eat animal products. So I cut it off for my own health too. (I also, just got bored of meat and fish for those wondering)

  • How do people around you think about you eating vegetarian?

My brothers judge me a lot and openly express their disliking for my dietary choices, but 7 months later and I still don’t care.

  • do you think there are enough options for people who want to eat vegetarian?
I live in South Florida so eating vegetarian is pretty easily, eating vegan tho, that’s a bit more complicated.

  • Would you consider becoming vegetarian?
No. I dont know how to explain this in english but I need meat in my diet. I can get very sick if I dont get food. and Yes I have tried to go vegetarian it did not work. I was sick all the time. I have finally found a diet there works for me and I am keeping it

  • Why do you think people eat vegetarian, do you agree with it or not?
diffrent cases. most people I know its because of animals. personally I do buy
organic. the only thing I think taste diffrent is milk.

Not really no

I think it’s a perfectly valid lifestyle choice  And of course I agree with it, if they had a serious think about the things they want to eat or not eat and came out the other side vegetarian, who am I to question that?

Of course, I get questioned for not being vegetarian, but I’m above it, personally :upside_down_face: Not bitter at all.

With regards to the environmental factors, while it’s admirable? The average person doesn’t really make a dent in the damage to the environment. Even an average person’s car doesn’t have a substantial effect, and choosing not to drive or not to eat meat is mostly placebo in all honesty. The real culprits are large companies involved in fossil fuel industries, but of course. We can’t do anything about them can we? Unless we get the guillotines out But as I said, admirable nonetheless!

Ooooh we finally disagree about something! Well sorta!

So yes, it’s companies doing a ton of damage to the environment. But on of the reasons they can and do so much damage is because of demand. Like if consumers stopped buying cheap fast fashion clothes, consumers stopped demanding meat at such a level, consumers stopped consuming just so dang much, we could really make a dent in this whole thing together.

Would I like companies to stop polluting? Yes, of course. But that won’t happen unless there’s a dramatic change in government that wouldn’t mind making literally everything more expensive for people and politicians care about getting re-elected so that won’t happen. (God forbid you say take away subsidies on farm goods because meat is priced artificially low, at least in the US because of gigantic subsidies, you would never get elected! Or say, start pricing water at its true value, there goes agriculture and other water-intensive and highly polluting industries (highly recommend watching the water crisis on Netflix’s Explained series.)

It’s the same thing with voting, imo. I get discouraged because I’m only one vote out of millions, but you can’t think this way or else I let other people vote for me. We can vote with our wallets and effect change that way, but it has to be on a massive scale, because while one person can’t and doesn’t move the needle, many people together can!

And this may be preaching to the choir, since you might personally already consume less, but it’s such a change in thinking and values for me that I think it’s worth saying here.

One thing I will say is that vegetarians/vegans are painted in a very bad light in the media. A lot of them are shown as being “preachy” or in general just a group of people who stick their noses into other peoples business. Most of the time this isn’t the case and it frustrates me when people ask vegans/vegetarians questions then start rolling their eyes at them and calling them names. Your dietry choices are nobodies business but your own so you shouldn’t stick your nose into other peoples business. That goes for everyone regardless of if you eat meat or not.

I completely agree with you on this!
@ChaoticDeluge I don’t think it’s a placebo effect, sure 1 person doesn’t make a big difference but it’s a start and you have to start from somewhere. I do think there are more things we can focus on to keep this earth livable besides producing less meat, like driving less cars, but it definitely is one of the things that does help. Maybe not if 1% of the population eats less meat but it really would if the total consumption would go down like 25% in the next years.

I never really experienced this myself  Maybe it’s cause the Netherlands is a country with a relatively high amount of vegetarians, just a little over 5% tho, but it is more accepted here.
And you are right about the fact food choices are no ones business (well maybe people you live with like parents or a partner have a bit of influence on it which I think is okay since you eat together)
