Episode Releases Discussion: My Sister's Crush

Tbh, haven’t gotten into reading this one all the way through yet, but I have read every episode of the original so I can’t see how it’ll be all that different.

Spoiler level: Mild

Let’s talk about…

My Sister’s Crush

“You’re an outcast whose mean sister makes life miserable. When your sister gets you sent away, you come back changed. Throw a hot guy into the mix (because of course you do), and it means war!”

So uhh… we need a name for the MC in the beginning right?

So Mary Sue, in the beginning, is a stereotypical “nerd”. She wears glasses, has bad taste in clothing (according to her sister at least), reads, and cares about her grades. You know, typical “nerd” stuff.

And uh… can we talk about that diamond choice? Like… that was totally random. Literally not brought up before or has anything to do with the story. But that’s just an example of Episode reaching for cash so…

Her sister is basically a typical party girl who fawns over the LI the whole time…

(Ok I’m sorry but I HAD to customize him like that- AND IT JUST FITS THIS SCENE and him… cough SO MUCH!)
While also going through bucket loads of guys… But that line is kinda ironic for Mary Sue to say considering that in the original she fawns over two brothers, switching between them…

She (the sister) does “bad” stuff like ditch school and then near the end of the first ep blames it on her sister… Which to know one’s surprise eventually goes to extreme lengths to eventually get her sent away to a prison-like place.

Overall I think it’s written well (compared to other stories at least). I don’t like Mary Sue. Everyone loves her except for her sister… Despite this description in the beginning:

It’s like everything she does is justified and most of her problems are usually other people’s faults. Despite the tattoo, hair and outfit change she hasn’t really changed. She’s what I’d describe as chaotically good. And an annoying level of “sassy” that I really just hate.
The one thing I like about the character is that her core values don’t change. like the fact that she values school and likes to read. I really wish the author went more in-depth with that to establish a better character. Like what are her favorite stories, why does she value school… etc… She’s almost the same as every other MC I see.

I’ve come to expect that with featured Episode stories but not community stories. I do think that there are some different things that I actually like about the story- like her insane sister. The people in the story clearly acknowledge there’s something wrong with her and I like that. The parents are actually good parents (well I’m iffy about the mom…).

There are some redeemable aspects but it’s really hard to get over my annoyance of sassy characters.

Anyway uhh… what are your thoughts?

I’m platform banned so I can’t read  but like I’m going to stalk this. So far, it looks pretty cliche but I love this part

I just started reading this for the thread and I can’t already. I feel like this is going to be the kind of story I find terrible but entreating.

“I was so much different back then, way different, and then I got contact lenses and learned how to combine my pigtails into one super tail and everything changed.” They could have at least given yuh girl some braces too, that feels like a believable transformation, I knew girls who got orthodontia taken care of over the summer and came back to school looking like models.

I mean if they’re GOING to do the cliches they might as well AT LEAST try to make them as realistic as possible… ugh… I think at this point Episode realizes how cliche their stories are and are purposely making them that way.

Honestly this story is stuck in the 50’s like any other cliche tbh. Reading is lame and not going to parties is lame. People rarely even go to parties anymore unless you’re in college or a celeb. Don’t even get me started on the beginning, they described her as a cliche MC.

Is every character in Episode sarcastic or what? I’ve yet to see a character that ISN’T sarcastic on the trending page!

I believe they jsut say their character is saracastic to sound relatable, but it’s overused.

Ah. Villainizing people with mental illnesses, typical of episode. Not even a respectful portrayal

Yeah… In the original it’s kind of revealed that there is DEFINITELY something wrong with her sister and the author only gave one moment of sympathy for her. But most likely not an accurate portray because the sister is just the epitome of a cliche mean girl… except way more extreme.

Like at least explain??

I hate when authors give me a list of adjectives for a character in the first place, why don’t you just write a sarcastic character and I’ll figure it out for myself, Mary. Or better yet, let me decide if the character is sarcastic, remember when we had choices?
