In all honesty, when Aesthi had spoke of the friends xe had left behind, Marc thought of xem as a child. His own ignorance was partly to blame: the few people Marc had had extensive conversations with were, so far, mostly -if not all- travellers. People who liked adventure, who sought a change. Naturally, they weren’t the kind to wallow about missing home. Marc himself wasn’t all that familiar with the feeling: if his attachment to Rold Skov was a lot more nuanced than César’s, saying that there was anyone to miss there would be a bit of a stretch.
And then there was the fact that a good amount of sympathy for the so-called Freya tugged at his heart. Now, her feelings, he could understand more than well. “It might be worth taking a look at the bigger picture,” he replied. If Freya was so keen on reconnecting with Aesthi, it could have been that she cared. And if that were true, Marc couldn’t imagine that she would have sacrificed xys happiness without a reason. Unless there was something Aesthi had that Freya wanted, and Marc realised that he really didn’t know enough about the situation to pursue his argumentation -at least not without becoming the perfect illustration to Shakespeare’s definition of a fool. His smile remained, although the colour in his cheeks faded a little.
“It takes a good deal of maturity to accept the consequences of events we’d rather forget,” he said instead, following xys will to change the subject, before chiming: “just for that, you’re quite brilliant.” There was no telling whether or not he truly meant it, although all evidence seemed to show that he did. After all, Aesthi had answered his teasing merely by asking his name -and Marc appreciated wit. “Nice to meet you,” he lilted. “I’m Marc Erlion.” He paused for a moment, before adding, with unprecedented warmth: “Where is your family from, then?”
