She watched as her boyfriend considered this, waiting to hear his answer. “Yea, uhm, he probably knows?” Her eyes widened at this and she looked completely caught off guard. “If you smoke long enough, you develop quite a nasty cough, and it’s pretty obvious after that point. Plus, they tell you on the packets, so if you buy some you aren’t left in the dark about the effects.” Bay frowned, remembering the fruity packets Kato had been using. She didn’t remember seeing any labels on them, but she hadn’t been paying much attention to how they looked-more how they would taste smoked. “If he knows, why would he still do it?!” She wailed-even though she figured it was because he was badly addicted. “A nasty cough? Maybe he can’t read, though?”
“if you want to tell him, feel free,” His tone was light-hearted. “I don’t think he would take too kindly if I just walked up to him and told him he was killing his lungs.” Her eyes lit up and she clapped her hands. Then, as if she hadn’t heard him right, she said, “That’s a great idea! You should tell him!” She elbowed him playfully, “Y’know, man-to-man! Maybe not the word ‘killing’, though?” She cringed-“I could see him ‘not taking too kindly to that’.” She tilted her head-“You’re a lot smarter than me anyways, I don’t know if I could remember all of that!”
She heard the rustling of fabric as she continued to study the lines, veins, and prune marks on her hands. “I think our fish is almost ready.” She looked over to him, and then to where he was looking-the oven. “OH MY GOSH!!!” She jumped from her seat, so excited she couldn’t contain herself. “It smells amazing…” She said, half sighing, half talking. She didn’t try to take it out of the oven, as she would likely burn herself trying.
