Jack Cricket & Zachary Frost
Between the grand carriages and fancy gowns, the beat-up red beetle car rattled and puffed before skidding to a halt on the gravel drive. The drivers door was the first to burst open, as an excited little woman jumped out and stared in awe at the castle that had been renovated into such a unique and curious school. Leaning on the top of the car, she admired it with a giddy grin. “Oh, would you just look at that, Cocco! It really is something, and all the staff they have, goodness there must be an entire city of royals walking around here.”
Getting out of the cramped backseat, Jack Cricket gave a small smile to his mother. “We’ve seen it all before, Mamma. You saw me off last year, remember?”
Maria Cricket wrinkled her nose in a smile, grabbing her son and pulling him in for a hug. “By the Blue Fairy, you grow up so fast.” She said, kissing him on the head aggressively.
On the other side of the car, Jay’s father was looking at the school with a touch more scepticism, collecting Jay’s things with little more than a cautious frown. After all the stories Jay had brought back from his first year at the school, it was an understatement that the man’s suspicion about the place had only grown, and though he hadn’t said much on the topic he was still very worried for his son. The only reassurance he had been given was by the very blue fairy that his wife still believed was myth. Jiminy Cricket passed the tattered old suitcase over to Jay, and offered a tiny smile as he pushed his worries to the back of his mind.
“Do you have everything you need?”
Jay held the suitcase with two hands, “extra sweaters, a backup pair of glasses, and enough underwear to last me through an apocalypse.” He gave a cheeky grin to his mother for the last one, “I think I’m set. If I need anything I can always ask Zack.”
Jiminy sighed, the flicker of disappointment at the fact that Jay would rather have his friend magic up something than ask his parents, but it was quickly replaced with a trusting nod as he walked Jay over to the entrance. Maria had been right, there were so many people bustling about, even though it was already lunchtime. Jay remembered just how out of place he had felt on his first day the year before. It hadn’t changed one bit, and the new faces only made him feel more alone in the ocean of strangers, many far more rich and famous then he could ever be. The royals just made him extra anxious. He looked around hoping for some familiarity, and was glad to see Atticus Lake over by one of the many fountains, catching his eye and exchanging a wave. If only he could find Zack, he could finally relax a little…
“Jay!”
As if summoned by the thought, a tall white haired idiot jumped out from seemingly nowhere and almost knocked Jack off his feet in a hug. Zachary Frost laughed as he smothered his best friend. The sound seemed to echo even above the orchestra of chatting and yelling by the other students, and a couple looked up curiously. Jay patted his friend on the arm with a smile.
“I was worried you wouldn’t show.”
“What! Of course I was gonna show, who else is gonna protect you against any crazy wizards. or, well… wizard kids? Besides, I promised Mom I wouldn’t be late this time.”
Jack frowned. Zach looked like he had just arrived. He wasn’t even in uniform, just a pair of tattered jeans and a long-sleeved shirt that he had rolled up to hide the paint stains. It was already midday. of the second day. The reason Jay was a day behind was because unlike most magic kids he’d had to travel by car with his parents. Zachary had the luxury of flight and even the ability to make portals.
He gave Jay a sheepish grin. “Okay, so I wasn’t late for my first lesson… I don’t think.”
Jay laughed, which spread to Zach’s face as he only hugged his friend tighter, before Jay finally fought him off. Marie wandered over as Jiminey helped to sign Jay in, and she beamed as she looked Zach up and down, like she was the aunt who barely got to see him.
“Good gods, Zach, if you grow any taller you’d be through the roof! What are they feeding you, beanstalks?” She laughed, pulling him into a hug as well, which Zach enjoyed immensely. He always had loved spending time with Jay’s family. Maybe it was because of how vibrant and loud they were compared to his own home? Jay never had truly worked it out. Zach picked Marie up off the floor in his hug and she laughed, smacking him playfully before going on to ask about his father - Jack Frost being noticeably absent though he had likely just already gone home. They were a day late after all.
“He’s good, yeah! We recently went to some of the big forests to paint the leaves, and I surprised this group of kids with a little snow flurry, they thought Christmas had come early, haha!”
Marie rolled her eyes, still grinning from ear to ear. “You boys and your tricks. I didn’t miss the patch of frost on my pepper plants last week. I will remind you both that it is still autumn and I would like to enjoy that season for as long as possible.”
Zach bowed apologetically, but the cheekiness was still very much there. Marie chuckled. “And how’s your mother?”
That made him flinch.
“Oh, uh, yeah! No, she’s doing, um… great! Lots of work. buzzing about here and there. Well, not buzzing as in flying I mean! She can’t fly, haha, no, she’s very much human like that-”
Jay jumped in before Zach could mess up anymore. “What he means is, she’s doing fine. You can ask Pappa if you like, I think he recently sent a letter to her, she might of replied.”
Marie, who had been confused, suddenly latched onto the bate. “He did?! When! God, that man never tells me anything. I wanted to send her that quilt I had been making, ugh, you two wait here. JIMMEY!!”
Zach winced as the fiery little lady stormed off to question her husband, and gave Jay an apologetic glance. “Sorry, I keep forgetting she doesn’t know and I freak out. I don’t get why you can’t tell her. Doesn’t your father know?”
Jay sighed. It was a big secret that Zach wasn’t just the son of Jack Frost. His father was already a powerful spirit of the north. The Blue Fairy was still questioned on if she was real, or just some kind of angel in disguise, or maybe even a sort of goddess. No matter what she was, it was undeniable that she was powerful, and the fact that she had born a child with another very powerful being only doubled the scandal. Nobody knew that The Blue Fairy had a child, and Zach’s parents intended to keep it that way for as long as possible, the only exception being Jay’s dad who was Blue’s closest friend beside frost. As for Jay, he’d only found out because Zach was terrible at keeping secrets and had a terrible habit of letting things slip.
Running a hand through his hair, he nodded to the commotion going on down the hall. “I think the next lesson is starting or something. You might want to head off to that.”
Zach nodded, and grabbed Jay in another last second hug before running off. “Hurry up and settle in! I’ll save you a space at lunch!”
Jay nodded, smiling as his friend disappeared into the crowd, his ice white hair vanishing into the sea of uniforms. Collecting his things, he bid his parents farewell, and set off in search of his Dorm room. Last year he had been partnered with Zach. He wondered if this year would be any different.
ORP: Jay is approachable for anyone interested!
@Skyler2 I’ll write Zach’s next scene in a sec!
