Rylan always thought blushing was adorable. And since Asa was already adorable, the pink color dusting his cheeks made him look really cute. Rylan felt nervous now, his heartbeat quickening as he quickly looked away from Asa’s cheeks so he wouldn’t notice. Though that didn’t mean he wasn’t listening. “I really like velociraptors,” Rylan’s interest immediately returned and his head involuntarily whipped around because he really wanted to see the velociraptors. “Those are my favorite,” he mumbled under his breath, gruff and excited at the same time. So quiet it would be hard to hear. Meanwhile, Shelldon remarked, “Oh, those are Rylan’s favorite.” Rylan wanted to smack him for making Asa aware of this, but he didn’t deny it. They all looked so cool and realistic-outlined in colorful pens, posing differently, baring their teeth. Wow.
Shelldon blew on his the back of his hand to dry the bled-out green ink-“Nah, I don’t think you could beat this,” he joked to Asa-the tortoise was lopsided, and almost looked crushed, but he was still content with it. He pulled up his sleeve over the drawing, returning the cap to the pen. “You mentioned the story and I guess I just assumed they were your parents,” Asa said, kind and calm. Rylan felt embarrassed-he’d forgotten when they did that. “Yup, that’s dad and…dad,” Shelldon said, nodding smirkily and pretending he hadn’t just made a mistake. “We’re adopted, obviously.” Asa looked as embarrassed, though Rylan now looked relieved Asa hadn’t kept up with the races-this probably meant he didn’t know about his past, his accident, and his losses. Good, he thought to himself, staring at Asa and feeling bad he looked so embarrassed. “Nothing special anyways,” he got out, eating his food. Shelldon glared at him, looking upset he’d said this. Rylan thought it might make Asa feel better, but really it made him look like a pessimist who had just insulted his parents.
Both were happy to hear Asa had a nice father-“Your mom’s the one who separated you two then?” Rylan asked, and then instantly regretted it-why did he just say whatever was on his mind? Shelldon sent him another glare-a warning one this time. “He sounds like such a cool dad.” He said loudly, trying to cover up his brother’s mistake. And sh-t, now Asa was crying. Shelldon and Rylan were horrible with this…emotional people. They glanced at each other-they had no idea what to do, but they liked Asa and wanted to help. Shelldon patted him on the back, “Hey, hey, it’s okay, don’t cry…” He said in between pats. “Or…do cry…We won’t judge you,” Rylan added gruffly and quietly, feeling this was somehow all his fault.
Rylan stared at Asa, trying to manage a somewhat compassionate face. He didn’t really understand how Asa felt, but he didn’t like seeing him hurting. Meanwhile, Shelldon pulled out his planner-dark green with a leather like crocodile skin for the cover. He opened it, flipping to the page with his and Rylan’s schedules as Asa wiped his eyes. “Oh, here, do you want this?” Shelldon offered him an unused napkin to wipe his eyes. “Alright, here are mine, Advanced Mathematics…” he let out a small, hardly noticeable shudder for some reason, “Advanced Literature, Villain History, Advanced Chemythstry, Advanced Dark Magic, Art, Robotics, and Languages and Cultures.” He went through these fairly quickly, “And Rylan has, Mathematics, Literature, Villain History, Chemythstry, Dark Magic, Choir, Culinary, and then Logic.” He read Rylan’s classes because even though Rylan hadn’t directly told him, he knew his brother would be sour and embarrassed to read them on his own.

Rylan kept blushing and looking all prideful as Asa blushed too, thanking him. He felt very straight-faced in that moment, despite the small smile that tugged on his lips. He looked puzzled, though, “You’d do that? No, you don’t have to make me another one.” He looked fondly at the other one in his hands. He didn’t want Asa to have to do any more work for him, but he still didn’t know where to put it. I guess I’ll just put it in my binder for now, he thought, leaning away from Asa and trying to find it. His backpack was pretty messy and it kinda hurt to be in such an awkward position but he didn’t want Asa to see. Finally, he pulled out the brown plastic book, balled up pieces of paper falling out of his backpack. He slid the paper very gently into the plastic, making sure it wouldn’t get dented or folded. He narrowed his eyes into slits as he did this, focusing on nothing else.
Shelldon looked excited, “Ooh, picture,” He pushed himself over to Rylan and gave him bunny ears, sticking his tongue out at the camera and closing both eyes [
] while Rylan held up the binder, shyly looking away from the camera, though he kept his smile as he proudly displayed the gift. Asa had really improved his day, and it was visible on Rylan’s normally stern face. It had been awhile since he’d met someone he could get along with so well, and he hoped it would stay that way and not get ruined like everything else.
