Sherwin tucked in the last of the snacks into his backpack and tried to zip it up but couldn’t, after a few tries; however, he managed to close the bulging backpack. He grabbed the letter from OUAH, his watch that he fastened on his wrist, and checked his phone. Yea, plenty of time.
Sherwin was about to leave when he noticed his tennis shoes by the door and sighed, “No, no, no, the last thing I feel like doing is destroying yet another pair of shoes.” Sherwin sighed, he doubted the school would let him walk around barefoot but he hoped he could convince them to allow it, if not, he could always spend even more of his money on shoes. Sherwin casually jogged to the beach and looked out at the sea, he pulled out a little black notebook the size of his palm and flipped it open and sighed, “This one’s for you…old friend.” He murmured softly, he couldn’t even say their name not until he was fast enough. Fast enough to make up for what he did, or rather what he couldn’t do. Sherwin gently touched the page he was up to, this one would definitely be for the books. He had spent so much time analyzing what happened, so many months and years that he hoped if they were watching him now, he would make them proud. He carefully put it back into a secure zipper pocket on his backpack. Sherwin took a deep breath and stretched for two full minutes when he was done he double checked that everything in his backpack was secure before assuming the standard track position. Sherwin looked out at the sea and took off…in the opposite direction. Sherwin laughed, he knew what this achievement meant if he succeeded, but man, he just couldn’t help it.
100 mph
The feeling of the cool fall wind rushing through his hair, tickling the smaller hairs along his muscled arms. He could remember being a kid and sticking his arm out the car window, and getting that same feeling. Only nothing could compare to this, Sherwin laughed and ran faster!
300 mph
Sherwin circled back now that he was far enough out, he picked up more speed as he now rapidly approached the shoreline. Faster and FASTER!
550 mph
Sherwin checked his watch and hit the surf, he remembered the first time he ran across water, and it was exhilarating! It was exactly the same as running on land but entirely different at the same time. “Come on, come on.” He checked his watch again and pushed himself faster.
675 mph
710 mph
Sherwin had had enough; with a determined yell, he pushed himself harder than he ever had before. Suddenly a boom could be barely be heard in the distance, Could that be…? Sherwin checked his watch.
767 mph
“YES!” He shouted and another boom could be heard in the distance. He laughed, Of course, any action I do that isn’t consistently the same speed will repeatedly break the sound barrier! He couldn’t believe it, he actually did it, he was finally faster than the speed of sound! He always thought of himself as just a guy who could run fast, but now he was faster than the speed of sound, only barely, but still it was unbelievable. These thoughts raced through his head, at the same speed of course, the feeling was amazing. Sherwin was so busy enjoying the feeling that he stopped paying attention because apparently he had crossed onto land some time ago and he tripped on a small root sticking out of the ground. He slammed into the ground hard breaking his right arm completely as he tried to stop his fall, but his speed kept him going, tumbling like a boulder for the next few hundred miles until he slammed back first into a tree, breaking one of his lower vertebrate, spun around from the impact and skidded hard until stopping in the middle a small, newly formed crater.
Sherwin wheezed and coughed, everything hurt: his ears were ringing, his vision was blurry, he had blood cascading down his face, he couldn’t feel his legs and his right arm hurt worse than what he thought was his worst injury to date; in addition to his injuries, Sherwin was steaming and his clothes had burned off due to the buildup of the extreme heat, the only thing that was even remotely left was his torn, smoldering jeans. Sherwin used his left hand to try crawling and also tried to call for help but to no avail as his words wheezed out of him. He finally slumped facedown, his hand extended as if trying to reach for something and slipped into unconsciousness.
