Nathaniel Darkthorne
Nate’s gaze locked with Saige as she shrugged off the comment about her speed, her nonchalant demeanor further deepening the air of mystery that surrounded her. The tension between them seemed to lessen momentarily, yet the lingering sense of anticipation in the air remained. Before Nate could further challenge this individual now known as Sage, Delphi swiftly took charge, their movements toward the Anubis statue drawing Nate’s immediate attention. There was an unconscious draw as if Delphi was connected to this artifact, the same one that Nate recalled others of his groupmates analyzing. A shiver crept up his spine, the ominous feeling that reached for his heart, and froze him in his steps toward Delphi.
Thoughts of Saige flickered through Nate’s mind. Her peculiar actions and evident curiosity diverted Nate’s attention from Delphi. The unfolding events and the urgency in Saige’s actions intensified the whirlwind of thoughts racing through Nate’s mind. The biggest one couldn’t be ignored, is Saige involved in this?
Amidst the chaos of flickering lights, screams, and broken glass, Saige’s command pierced through the air, piercing Nate’s consciousness. “Nathan, stay with your girlfriend.” The words reverberated in his mind, stirring a complex tapestry of thoughts and emotions.
Nate’s eyes, already adjusted to his surroundings, aimed at Delphi, the enigmatic figure who had become a friend. Their partnership was one of intellectual exploration and shared experiences, a delicate dance between two souls hungry for enlightenment.
Yet, as the chaos unfolded around them, Nate found his body unable to move. Every fiber of his being struggled to comprehend the events that had just transpired and the intricacies of his relationship with Delphi. Nate willed himself to take a step toward Delphi, but his gaze remained fixed on Saige the possible glue to everything around him.
The flickering lights cast an ethereal glow upon Nate’s surroundings, mimicking the uncertainties that swirled within his mind. Within the chaos and uncertainty, the conflicting emotions raged like a storm. The fear of being misunderstood and the compulsion to understand took charge of the battle within him.
Nate’s eyes slowly reverted to Delphi, the weight of Saige’s command now being the thing lingering in the air. However, in this crucial moment, Nate’s mind landed on a decision before his heart. He backed away from Delphi, abandoning them, and ran towards the door.
With every determined step, Nate’s mind raced, dissecting every detail, every footfall echoing his unwavering determination to understand what happened before the security gets here. The surrounding corridor seemed to Fade into an abyss, developed by impenetrable darkness that heightened his sense of foreboding.
As Nate reached the door, a scene of pandemonium unfolded before him. He had entered a room that seemed to exist in stark contrast to the surrounding darkness. The only source of light emanated from within, casting an eerie glow upon his classmates and Erek… Erek who lay crumpled on the floor, his robotic nature now revealed in all its mechanical intricacy. The once-familiar face of popularity had transformed into a blend of metallic components, defying rational comprehension.
Nate’s thoughts swirled in a maelstrom of disbelief and awe. This was the first time he had encountered such a stark convergence of technology and mortality; challenging the boundaries of reality and fractions before his eyes. The weight of this revelation pressed tightly upon his soul, a realization that his beliefs and his calling had been at his school all along.
Approaching the group, Nate quickly focuses on the room and its inhabitants. Halia, Jamie, Josias, and Saige, gathered around Erek, their expressions a mix of concern and disbelief. The room was a jumble of overturned chairs and scattered debris, a testament to the frenzy that had ensued. Amid the chaos, Nate’s keen eyes caught glimpses of fear and uncertainty etched upon their faces.
Erek’s words and pleas didn’t touch Nate’s ears, nor the begs and screams from his schoolmates, overshadowed by the overwhelming sight that lay before him. The room, with off-white walls, closed in as Nate studied every aspect of this area. Folding tables and stacked chairs occupied the top right corner, a possible room for conferences and discussions.
Fixated on the leftmost wall where Erek and his schoolmates were gathered, Nate approached the nearby door, his hand instinctively reaching for the handle. Confirming it was locked, he whispered, voice filled with wonder and speculation.“The chairs were scattered like pieces of a puzzle. They were probably thrown in a frenzy, a desperate attempt to defend against an unknown threat.” Nate wondered if anybody even heard him amongst the whispers and screams.
Nate’s mind raced, weaving together fragments of information to form a narrative that defied everything he was caught. “Those smaller tracks near the rightmost door? They don’t match our footprints. Something was hidden in the shadows watching waiting.”
With purposeful intent, Nate dropped his messenger bag onto the floor, reaching into it to grab his backup phone and lockpicking tools. “That door… I can open it,” He declared, his voice resonating with a mix of anticipation and fear.
