Saige Armony

The shorter one pointed out how fast it took Saige to get from the Ancient Greek exibit all the way to the Ancient Egyptian exhibit and Saige just shrugged at the comment as if to say “I can’t help it if I walk to places quickly.”

Then…the taller one introduced himself at “Nathaniel”. Not “Nathan”, or “Nat” or any other possible nickname. Just…“Nathaniel”…which showed another layer of distrust in their conversation. However, for some reason, all that distrust seemed to melt away as Nathaniel introduced his friend, Delphi, though it did reappear the moment they both turned to Saige for her introduction.

“My name is is Saige. I’m new to the school but I’ve been to this museum before…at least the Ancient Greece exhibit section.” Saige quickly explained and clarified to hopefully lessen some of the tension. “And…no.” She added to answer Delphi’s question.

Seconds later…Delphi was gone…walking over to an Anubis statue.

“Does she…?” Saige started to ask if Delphi normally does that, looking back at Nathaniel who had immediately resumed his tense position.

Saige looked back at Delphi just as the lights flickered. Saige looked up with a slight frown. “That’s odd…” She thought out loud.

Then it happened again, followed by a bunch of screaming.

“Nathan, stay with your girlfriend.” Saige glanced at Nathaniel before running in the direction of the screaming, itching for a closer look at what was going on admist the crowd of students rushing to the door as well.

The ‘popular kid’ was just left by the wall. Everyone was staring at him. Someone rushed out to him to try and help, but she couldn’t do it alone.

“Move it!” Saige almost hissed pushing past the swarm of kids over to the girl kneeling by the injured student.

“What do you need?” She asked the girl softly.

Plunged in darkness, Josias had slipped to his belly protecting his head. There was a split second before the lights flickered on for a second, and he peeked up to see the destruction, and then suddenly the lights burst off with a final and deafening scream, telling everyone they were doomed—or worse. Glass sprayed Josias over the head. Was this an earthquake? It had every possible reason to be, but it felt—off. Shouldn’t there be more… rumbling? Things falling? But what did Josias know about earthquakes anyways. Maybe his adrenaline was too strong to feel any of it. People in the underground exhibit started screaming, others harshly chanting. “Sh-t, sh-t, sh-t”. Oh. It hit him, “Halia?” Josias croaked, somehow his voice nothing but the old, scorching sands of Egypt in his lungs. Someone else in the background had said something, but Josias was too out of it to hear properly, and—then he was alone. Halia had left and Hayden had disappeared at one point. At this point most were rushing to the door that seemed like the light at the end of this hellish tunnel. But everything felt… off. An evil entity amongst the group. Josias could sense a looming presence, something dark and malevolent lurking in the shadows. His heart racing, he tried to make sense of what was happening around him, but it was all too chaotic.

Struggling to his feet, he shuffled towards the group, dodging falling debris along the way. When he reached the door, he was relieved to see several people together… by a man who lay on the ground, seemingly unconscious.

As Josias approached the group, his heart sank when he recognized the guy. Erek King. Josias pushed his way through the crowd and dropped to his knees beside Erek. “What happened?” Josias asked, frantically checking for a pulse. “What happened,” he whispered to himself. Trembling with fear and desperation, he closed his eyes and began to recite a prayer, hoping it would offer some protection.

Erek grit his teeth. Up close, one could make out the large hole in his chest, the edges of what was now unmistakably a hologram warping and glitching where the edges met charred metal. He waved off Halia, Saige, and Josias’ attempts to help, trying to get up, before falling again. “I’m fine. It’s… fine.” It clearly was not fine, but there wasn’t much in the way the others could do to help him, and he wasn’t about to make his group-mates freak out.

“If they come back and find you, they will kill you.” It was a matter-of-fact statement. “I don’t know why, but they’ve already taken nearly all of my people.” Erek couldn’t help but let out a small, defeated laugh. The jig was up- there would be no coming back from this. He was exposed. He would die. And, well, from what he knew from dealing with human teenagers, they didn’t often like being told to run for their lives without explanation. “Because, clearly, I’m not human.”

He let the hologram drop for three seconds. For three entire seconds, Erek was just himself- the real Erek. An android made of steel and ivory, with a vaguely dog-like head and legs. In just three seconds, a secret he had kept for the better part of five thousand years was exposed. Erek shook his head. “No need to check for a pulse now, huh?”

The hologram re-appeared. It still flickered- whatever had caused the hole in his chest seemed to have damaged whatever was keeping the hologram intact. But it was there, at least- the facsimile of a human.

With each passing second, it repeats. Her thoughts automatically aim to distract, like a natural instinct.

Breathe in and breathe out, count to ten, think happy thoughts.

Her hands shook vigorously, more frantic with each passing second. Every fiber of her being was held together by a string and there was a flame capable of burning that thread. And with each pulse, it repeats.

Composure, pull yourself together, think of your favorite memory.

Then, it all started getting blurry. It started with just a single tear and finally, everything came trickling down. She whimpered quitely.

“Why?”

As a “last-ditch”, she glanced at the people surrounding her, hoping that they would pull her out of the water, before her tears drown her.

“What do you need?”, a voice, almost heavenly spoke.

“I’m not sure”, she answered pensively. Halia’s voice sounded fragile, vulnerable. But, soon her vulnerability would convert to guilt.

"What happened?”

The reality of it hit her like a truck. She had left Jo. A wave of guilt washed over her, something could have happened to him or Hayden, and she had just left them. Why? Because she was scared . . . and to her, that was pathetic.

Her intricate thoughts would soon halt as Erek was about to reveal his true form. “No need to check for a pulse now, huh?”. A once chaotic mind now left empty, Halia was utterly speechless. How was this possible?

“What are you? Who are you?”, she asked slowly, keeping her position next to Erek.

As the lights flickered, light bulbs breaking and raining down, Scarlett couldn’t tell whether she felt fear or excitement. Screams filled the room, panicked students rushing to the only source of light. But Scarlett stood still for a bit, inspecting the situation. Her entire body was shaking, yet she felt like laughing. Finally, something exciting was happening. She was almost glad she attended the museum trip.

Scarlett tried to push her fear aside, making sense of the situation. Her mind lingered on the principal’s warning to avoid the conference room. She was going to check it out either way, but didn’t expect much aside from a boring meeting. As the rest of the group rushed towards the room, the door opened wider and Scarlett could see what was happening better. She couldn’t help but wonder how many people knew what was happening before the lights went out. The popular boy, who was now lying on the ground, was clearly aware of everything. He was involved. Yet, he didn’t say anything when they arrived.

Of course, Scarlett wasn’t about to run. Her curiousity would never let her. Nothing happening in the conference room made sense, all she knew was that Erek was hunted by someone. And he wasn’t human. How long has it been going on? And how long until the threat returns? Scarlett might’ve been curious, but she didn’t want to put her life at risk. From afar, she could barely make out what was happening, but wasn’t sure if it would be wise to step any closer. The rest of her groupmates seemed to be as interested as she was, asking the same questions she would have. All she had to do was listen from a distance. She only took a few steps closer, to get a better view.

She remembered, up until the incident, she was talking to another student… Camlyn? She could barely see, but they couldn’t be far. “You still here? Or are you gonna rush towards the obvious threat too?” she asked, nonchalant. She made sure she showed no fear, no matter what. If people saw any of her weaknesses, it would be over for her. “Nice weather we’re having today.” she added, pointing towards the lightbulbs. Until she realized they can’t see anything. As inappropriate as it was to make a joke in that situation, she wanted to appear as calm as possible. While waiting for a reply, she glanced at the room again, taking a few more steps closer.

Nate’s gaze locked with Saige as she shrugged off the comment about her speed, her nonchalant demeanor further deepening the air of mystery that surrounded her. The tension between them seemed to lessen momentarily, yet the lingering sense of anticipation in the air remained. Before Nate could further challenge this individual now known as Sage, Delphi swiftly took charge, their movements toward the Anubis statue drawing Nate’s immediate attention. There was an unconscious draw as if Delphi was connected to this artifact, the same one that Nate recalled others of his groupmates analyzing. A shiver crept up his spine, the ominous feeling that reached for his heart, and froze him in his steps toward Delphi.

Thoughts of Saige flickered through Nate’s mind. Her peculiar actions and evident curiosity diverted Nate’s attention from Delphi. The unfolding events and the urgency in Saige’s actions intensified the whirlwind of thoughts racing through Nate’s mind. The biggest one couldn’t be ignored, is Saige involved in this?

Amidst the chaos of flickering lights, screams, and broken glass, Saige’s command pierced through the air, piercing Nate’s consciousness. “Nathan, stay with your girlfriend.” The words reverberated in his mind, stirring a complex tapestry of thoughts and emotions.

Nate’s eyes, already adjusted to his surroundings, aimed at Delphi, the enigmatic figure who had become a friend. Their partnership was one of intellectual exploration and shared experiences, a delicate dance between two souls hungry for enlightenment.

Yet, as the chaos unfolded around them, Nate found his body unable to move. Every fiber of his being struggled to comprehend the events that had just transpired and the intricacies of his relationship with Delphi. Nate willed himself to take a step toward Delphi, but his gaze remained fixed on Saige the possible glue to everything around him.

The flickering lights cast an ethereal glow upon Nate’s surroundings, mimicking the uncertainties that swirled within his mind. Within the chaos and uncertainty, the conflicting emotions raged like a storm. The fear of being misunderstood and the compulsion to understand took charge of the battle within him.

Nate’s eyes slowly reverted to Delphi, the weight of Saige’s command now being the thing lingering in the air. However, in this crucial moment, Nate’s mind landed on a decision before his heart. He backed away from Delphi, abandoning them, and ran towards the door.

With every determined step, Nate’s mind raced, dissecting every detail, every footfall echoing his unwavering determination to understand what happened before the security gets here. The surrounding corridor seemed to Fade into an abyss, developed by impenetrable darkness that heightened his sense of foreboding.

As Nate reached the door, a scene of pandemonium unfolded before him. He had entered a room that seemed to exist in stark contrast to the surrounding darkness. The only source of light emanated from within, casting an eerie glow upon his classmates and Erek… Erek who lay crumpled on the floor, his robotic nature now revealed in all its mechanical intricacy. The once-familiar face of popularity had transformed into a blend of metallic components, defying rational comprehension.

Nate’s thoughts swirled in a maelstrom of disbelief and awe. This was the first time he had encountered such a stark convergence of technology and mortality; challenging the boundaries of reality and fractions before his eyes. The weight of this revelation pressed tightly upon his soul, a realization that his beliefs and his calling had been at his school all along.

Approaching the group, Nate quickly focuses on the room and its inhabitants. Halia, Jamie, Josias, and Saige, gathered around Erek, their expressions a mix of concern and disbelief. The room was a jumble of overturned chairs and scattered debris, a testament to the frenzy that had ensued. Amid the chaos, Nate’s keen eyes caught glimpses of fear and uncertainty etched upon their faces.

Erek’s words and pleas didn’t touch Nate’s ears, nor the begs and screams from his schoolmates, overshadowed by the overwhelming sight that lay before him. The room, with off-white walls, closed in as Nate studied every aspect of this area. Folding tables and stacked chairs occupied the top right corner, a possible room for conferences and discussions.

Fixated on the leftmost wall where Erek and his schoolmates were gathered, Nate approached the nearby door, his hand instinctively reaching for the handle. Confirming it was locked, he whispered, voice filled with wonder and speculation.“The chairs were scattered like pieces of a puzzle. They were probably thrown in a frenzy, a desperate attempt to defend against an unknown threat.” Nate wondered if anybody even heard him amongst the whispers and screams.

Nate’s mind raced, weaving together fragments of information to form a narrative that defied everything he was caught. “Those smaller tracks near the rightmost door? They don’t match our footprints. Something was hidden in the shadows watching waiting.”

With purposeful intent, Nate dropped his messenger bag onto the floor, reaching into it to grab his backup phone and lockpicking tools. “That door… I can open it,” He declared, his voice resonating with a mix of anticipation and fear.

Saige watched as Erek tried to stand up…and fall.

Saige left Halia’s side at that moment to try and help sit Erek up against the wall, ignoring Erek’s extremely odd warning.

“If someone placed a target on a minor then something is really wrong.” Saige replied, narrowing her eyebrows while also glancing a bit at the gaping hole in Erek’s chest.

“Because, clearly, I’m not human.”

“What do you-” Saige started to ask before in her arms the human was replaced by a skinny metal mannequin figure, which Saige immediately let go of with a yelp.

The figure-no, robot, seemed to vaguley resemble the statue Delphi went to look at earlier.

“You’re like a…robot Anubis…” Saige whispered, loud enough for Erek and maybe Helia to hear. It didn’t take a genius to know that whatever was keeping Erek powered was fading and fast. There were so many questions Saige had for Erek and such little time.

Erek was clearly coping with humor and for whatever reason, Saige wasn’t concerned about Erek lying to the entire school or the fact that Erek was being hunted, she was just concerned about making sure everyone was okay, and figuring out if there is a possibility Erek could live…maybe even be connected to another electronic hub just so Saige could learn more about this new found puzzle.

“What are you? Who are you?”

Halia’s voice brought Saige back to reality, digging her out of the newly forming rabbit hole of questions in her mind. Saige looked at Halia and debated whether or not to she should grab Halia’s hand and attempt to comfort her.

A gust of wind made Saige look up, and to her surprise (once again) she saw Nathaniel, followed by a statement mixed with confidence and fear.

“Well, do it already.” Saige glared, speaking before she even realized what she was saying. “Either the people that did this are waiting behind the door, or they are not. Right now, that seems like the best option to get out of here. If we can get who did this, that’s great. If not…let’s get Erek out of here. That’s the closest exit right now, and we might be able to find somebody who could help Erek.”

Saige then took a deep breath and refocused herself on Halia, gently grabbing her hand and quickly wiping a tear away with her other hand. “We’re going to find help.” She said, trying her best to reassure Halia.

In that fateful moment when the lights first faltered and plunged the group into a suffocating darkness, Delphi couldn’t help but see the beauty in it. The soft flicker of strip lights and the glittering orbs of the glass reflecting soft designs about the artifacts, now more visible in the near pitch black. But, as the bulbs exploded like fireworks in the backdrop, a choir of horrified screams filled the air, causing her veins to go icy. Suddenly, Delphi found herself spiraling into a pit of dread as the eternal blackness engulfed her; save for the faint sim strip lights that trailed like tears around the room. The debris strewn throughout offered no signs of comfort or light.

A sudden jolt of remembrance rushed through her. Saige! Nate! The panic-laced fear of their disappearance pierced through her heart like a foghorn. Why had she stepped away from them? Where did they go? Where did he go?

The dim illumination of these dismal lights could not cleanse Delphi’s consciousness of the anguish gripping her soul. Her companions might be lost, lost to the darkness and whatever entities that lurked in this ethereal realm. Delphi’s heart raced as she stumbled through the darkness, her fingers trailing along the rough edges of the walls and display. The only sound was the echoing of her footsteps, and even that was soon drowned out by the pounding of her own pulse in her ears. She could feel the chill of the damp air seep deep into her bones, and her mind began to conjure up all sorts of dark, malevolent imaginings. As they groped their way forward, they heard in the distance what sounded like someone or something breathing, ragged and labored. Was it one of her fellow students, lost and wandering like she was? Fumbling in her pocket, Delphi managed to find her phone, but when she tried to turn on the flashlight, she realized with a sudden pang of terror that the battery was dead. She was completely helpless, completely alone.

But then, as she stumbled forward, she saw a faint glimmer of light in the distance, flickering like a welcoming beacon. A door, flung wide, calling her forward. As Delphi stumbled toward the door, she tripped in the eternal darkness. She felt her knees crunch under the glass coating the ground. The icy chill of the ground bit into Delphi’s skin like a thousand sharp icicles, as she stumbled over the debris and shattered glass that littered the ground. Her knees crunched and screamed in pain, as she fell forward, tumbling into the unyielding darkness.

On hands and knees, Delphi’s voice rasped. “Nate? Josias? Saige?” she swallowed another once of fear. “Any… anyone?”

The rasping sound of her breath echoing through the silent abyss, Delphi crouch there, her mind racing with terror and unforeseen horrors lurking just beyond her reach. The glimmer of hope that once buoyed her spirit in this “fun” adventure, was now but a distant memory. Straining her eyes against the impenetrable darkness, Delphi tried to recollect her bearings and steady herself. But her heart sank as the memory of her companions, Saige and Nate, lost in this quagmire of darkness, weighed heavily on her mind.

The cold grip of dread tightened around Delphi’s heart, as she decided, with a fierce determination, to get up and find her friends. Every move, every step, she took in the eternal darkness, was deliberate, as she pushed herself to the threshold of her endurance, searching through this labyrinth of shadows.

Camlyn raised an eyebrow at Scarlett’s suggestion. She wasn’t much of a troublemaker, per se, but the thought intrigued her. “I’m down. We scout the area, make sure no teachers are around, then check it out? It’s better than this- I mean, I love history, but there’s only so many times i can go around the same exhibit before my eyes glaze over.” She laughed. “But, still, isn’t it just a construction site? I doubt there would be anything interesting there.”

To punctuate her sentence, the lightbulbs started whining and flashing. Cam started, but brushed it off- probably something to due with the construction, or just some faulty wiring. But then… it continued. It got more and more violent until the lightbulbs went the way of evil popcorn, raining down glass on her group mates. Cam ducked and put their hands up, their denim jacket taking the brunt of the glass, their face only getting slightly cut by the barrage of shards. “Are you okay?” Cam asked, turning to Scarlett- but Scarlett was looking somewhere else.

Cam could only catch faint snippets of conversation and undefined images from their distance from the room where everything was happening, but from what they did hear, it didn’t sound good. “Holy shit. Did Erek get shot?” Camlyn asked, quietly. At Scarlett’s questioning, Camlyn shook her head. “I don’t know, I…” They watched a handful of their peers move in, and Cam couldn’t help but take a few steps towards the commotion. Every cell in their body seemed to be at an internal civil war, their urge to run and help combatting with the knowledge that there was definitely something dangerous going on here. “You’d think I was a dumbass if I went in that room, wouldn’t you?”

Erek flexed his hands. To some extent, he knew this would happen. “It was a suicide mission,” he muttered, sighing. “I’m going to die,” he said, now more broadly, towards the entire group. “That’s my choice. I have to.” He propped himself up against the wall, head turning towards the door on the far right of the room. “I wouldn’t recommend following them, Nathaniel. Even with using my hologram to become nearly invisible, they still landed a good shot on me with their Dracon beams. How do you think you’d get out of that situation?” Erek raised an eyebrow pointedly. “If you really want to help- really want to do something- just… listen for a sec. I know it’s going to sound crazy, but you’re going to have to trust me.”

Erek looked up at Halia guiltily. “I’m sorry, Halia. Please believe me when I say I didn’t mean to startle you- if everything had gone perfectly, none of you would’ve ever known.” Part of Erek supposed that maybe it was better this way, but he didn’t dwell on those thoughts. “Who am I? Well, I’m still Erek. But, what am I?” He traced a finger across the tile floor. “I’m a Chee.” Erek laughed when Saige compared him to “a robot Anubis”. “Well, yeah, something like that. My kind- the Chee- we’re androids. We were built by an alien species called the Pemalites. Long story short, they look a lot like dogs, and we were built in their image, so… well, you saw the resemblence.”

Erek looked down. He knew it was a lot. Aliens. Androids. But his time was running out. Now wasn’t the time to mince words. “As far as I know, I’m the last of my kind that’s still alive. We’ve been hunted down, over the last few months. I assume whoever was caught was disassembled. Used for parts. Chee, we’re powerful technology. Valuable. But… we’re pacifists. We can’t fight. If someone who knew our secret wanted Pemalite tech?” Erek laughed darkly. “We’re toast.”

“The one’s who have been hunting us down- they’re here today. They said it was for a business conference.” He spoke faster now, more harried. “Berenson & Co. I don’t know how, or why, but their CEO, Jake Bereson, he knows about us.” Erek held his head, grimacing. “It’s like I should remember something, but I don’t. There’s just a gap. I have perfect memory- I’ve been around for hundreds of human lifetimes, and I remember everything perfectly. But there’s just a void there when I try to think of a few specific years…” He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. If you want to help… here’s how.”

Suddenly, Erek’s chest split open, the edges of the hologram dissolving where robotic parts extruded from an otherwise human body. Erek reached into the compartment, pulling out a glowing box that shifted between shades of blue and violet, almost as though it was alive. The light was calming, but staring at it for too long would make your head hurt, almost as though you were looking at one of those tesseract diagrams from physics class. “It’s called an Escafil device,” Erek said, his chest cavity closing with a whoosh. “It’s an alien device, it…” Erek growled. “Dammit. It’s so frustrating. I can’t remember almost anything about it.” He sighed, holding up the box. It was a bit bigger than his hand, but fit comfortably in his palm, though it seemed to interfere with his hologram, warping his skin and clothes. “I don’t know why, but whatever Berenson & Co. was doing today, it wasn’t just a normal conference. They had alien tech on display- all kinds of it. I’d gone to investigate, and I saw they had this. And… it felt important. I had to take it from them. So, I grabbed it, and this.” He held the off-white crystal in his other hand. “It’s a Pemalite Crystal. Powerful technology. Can rewrite code in any system- even in Chee.” He crushed the crystal in his hand, the sound of crunching glass filling the room. “It’s too dangerous in anyone’s hands. I don’t know how it washed back up, but now it’s gone. For good.”

Erek shifted his other arm, moving so that he now held the blue box with both hands. “I feel like I don’t remember everything I should about the Escafil device. I know I don’t. But I know enough.” His gaze met everyone in the room. “It gives any crature who touches it the power to morph. Turn into animals. Shapeshift, transfigure, what have you.” He gripped the device a bit harder. “I know it sounds crazy. It is crazy. I wouldn’t believe it myself, if I wasn’t, well, me.” He chuckled. “It’s a lot to ask. I don’t expect you to accept. But it’s the only thing i can give you.” For a long, eerie second, there was no sound, and only the light of the blue box filled the room. “Berenson & Co. killed the entirety of my people. I have a feeling that, whatever they’re planning, it would put everyone in danger- everyone on Earth. This… it’s the only power I can give to try and stop them.”

Jamie was about ready to sht a brick. Their brain was already severely overloaded with the idea of…aliens, and it wasn’t even lunch. They sighed when Erik explained the businessmen were evil. “Of course. I’ve read too much si fi to know anything different.” They spoke up. They jerked back when Erik’s chest opened, creeping forward to stare at the object in his hand. Listening to him explain, Jamie developed a headache. Yet, curiosity made them slowly reach out, hovering a hand over the device. They silently asked for permission to touch it, Hazel ayes asking so many questions with just a look, the most prominent being ‘are you going to die?’ They knew he’d die, though…they were in some sort of weird movie, and sht like that always happened in movies. They smiled. “Thank you.”

The weight of all her childhood memories hung idly in the air. With each muffled cry, each flinch, there was story being retoled in silence. Young and around 9 years old, Halia stands motionless, unable to move like her feet were glued to the floor. The smell of stale food had permeated the air, the kitchen tiles were cracked and they were unaware of Halia’s presence in the room. Her foster parents had been arguing back and forth loudly and the commotion had seemlessly flowed through to each crevice of their home. A home never once filled with joy or love, but home to Halia. Admist it all, objects started being thrown, books, knives, plates. The sound of metals clashing and breaking glass made her ears ring. Every yell, every scream, had deeply saddened her. She was never the main target, but she was aimed for, marked by the shards of broken cups at her feet. That night, she had left and she never looked back.

In the middle of it all, a hand, warm and soft had covered hers as she collected herself. A presence had been beside her, and she believed that person had a beautiful soul. “Saige? Thank you”, she sniffled with a faint smile. Tears were wiped from her face by Saige and she felt a newfound resilience blossom inside of her. Halia was more than her past, she was strong, her memories had been there to deter her but she knew better. She sighed as she glanced around the room, Nathaniel was here too but he directed his attention towards the chairs and locked door. He was well equipped with lock picking tools, the same kind she carried in her bag. She had known him from previous classes but they didn’t speak much during the years. Apparently they both had lock picking tools in their bags almost all of the time, leading Halia to believe that they were more similar than she thought, their personalities were strikingly different after all . . .

“I’m sorry, Halia. Please believe me when I say I didn’t mean to startle you- if everything had gone perfectly, none of you would’ve ever known”

She took in his words and stared anxiously at the escafil device. “It’s ok Erek, I just don’t know what to say”, her voice trailed off. She had no choice but to believe him, she saw his true form right before her eyes. This was real.

“Berenson & Co”, she repeated. It certainly rung a bell but she had no idea why they’d do this. Erek made it clear that he didn’t know what they wanted either. She was hesitant but, she was also curious. Jamie had crept over to Saige and Halia, asking permission to touch the device. She was taken aback by the immediate action but decided to stay quiet. Unknowingly, she had been reaching out to touch the device too.

HAYDEN POWELL: A little confused but he has the spirit

Hayden made a bit of a face at the beginning of her question, though he didn’t pry.
“Yup! Not every day you go to a museum, huh? Actually I guess that’s very common for schools…” he went silent for a second as they moved through the dark hall.

Flash! The space around them illuminated again.

“I don’t like using my camera for this sorta thing, wasting the film…but it’s better than moving blind!”

The conference room was just ahead, and not surprisingly, there was a small gaggle of kids arranged around the entrance. Surely they wanted to understand the commotion as much as he did.

”…put everyone in danger, everyone on earth…”

Yuh-oh, that didn’t sound good!

“What do you think they’re talking about?” He asked Carmen as he drew closer.
He could barely make the form of some sort of ivory colored…dog robot?

“Is that an animatronic? Like from five nights at Freddy’s?” Hayden asked, dumbfounded. He watched as the figure shifted from boy to machine from time to time.

He felt as though he had interrupted some sort of ritual, the way the other kids were surrounding a small, blue cube.

Hayden frowned.

“I don’t remember Freddy Fazbear playing a part in Egyptian history…”he muttered.

“Erek got shot?” Scarlett asked. Her vision was blurry, being too far to make out anything that was happening. She only had her hearing to rely on. But from what she could deduce, Erek being shot added up. Her heart was racing faster each second, yet she was sick of watching from a distance. Hearing Erek talk only rose more questions.

Noticing Camlyn take a few steps forward, Scarlett followed. “I wouldn’t say you’re a dumbass, that would make me a hypocrite.” she said, walking closer to the door. “I don’t know what’s happening, but how can I just stay here when all the fun is happening inside?” Scarlett took a few more steps forward, until she was standing clearly in the doorway. She saw her groupmates clearly now, gathered around Erek.

Scarlett couldn’t believe her eyes. Not only did he have a hole in his chest, but he was almost unrecognizable. She tried to listen to his explanation, but nothing made sense. Her thoughts were racing trying to make sense of everything, to the point where she only heard segments of his sentences Suicide mission? Hologram? Dracon beams? It sounded like science fiction. She listened, as excitement, fear and confusion clouded her thoughts.

As Erek’s chest split open, Scarlett only ran closer to see it better. The light illuminated the room, and she kneeled down, entranced by the device. Scarlett might’ve wanted an escape from her mundane life, but she never expected something like that to happen. Could it have been a prank? But judging by everyone else’s reactions, it was unlikely any of them were involved.

“Listen, I have absolutely no clue who you are, or what’s happening.” she turned to Erek. “But why do you think we’ll accept to do something so dangerous? How am I supposed to trust you?” Scarlett knew time was running low, considering his condition, but she still needed answers. As exciting as it seemed to accept his gift, she was cautious. She wanted to believe she had the chance to take on the role of saving the world, but it sounded too good to be true. “I would be willing to help, only if you can prove you’re trustworthy. Is that everything you know?”

I was not born a leader, I never wanted to be a leader, all I wanted to do is play sports and solve puzzles. - the instict

Carmen listened attentively as Hayden spoke, offering silent nods and occasional raised eyebrows to show she was listening to him and not being quiet to be rude. See, Carmen did want to engage in conversation and respond to him, but she found herself at a loss for words, particularly because Hayden appeared young and puny like a little kid- he also had the height of one. Carmen didn’t mean any offense, but she noticed Hayden’s lack of muscle and flexibility, and his deep interest in his camera more than anything. He seems to be obsessed with that Camera, and filming. He was probably a photographer, an artist more than anything, and Since Carmen didn’t share the same passion for cameras and had no knowledge of sports, she struggled to find common ground to continue the conversation with him. If she was a little bit more extroverted, she would be able to speak though they did not have a common interest from what she saw now, but she still did not know how to talk to people quite well yet.

She better get learning though, college was a knock away, meaning the real world was going to come soon. She shuddered at that, she was really not ready to become an adult and leave a way from her parents, her parents were her rock after all. She relied on them for most things- well it was more like she relied on them 45% and herself 55% because she liked to be independent and show her parents that she was useful. She liked to feel useful, especially since being useless is what got her - never mind.

They walked towards the conference room, and stopped when they notice a group of kids arranged at the entrance. Carmen recognized some of those faces; Halia Kealoha a class clown and a junior, Scarlett Knox a senior athlete like her, Camlyn Carter- the vice president of the GSA and from what Carmen had heard a junior veterinarian, there were other people she recognized except for a white brunette boy who looked to be the same age as Hayden, another freshman or sophomore she supposed, but she was not going to list all those people now. Especially since her face paled when she saw the last person she wanted to see right now.

Erek King, looking everything but human.

…put everyone in danger, everyone on earth…”

Carmen’s eyes widened as she heard the mention of danger. She leaned in closer, trying to eavesdrop better . However, before she could delve deeper, Hayden interrupted her, causing her to swiftly turn towards him, restraining the impulse to glare for interrupting her eavesdropping “Danger and a lot of danger. Be quiet for a moment, alright? Let’s listen to what they’re saying,” Carmen whispered, eager to uncover more details. She ignored the kid as he kept talking about some five night at Freddy’s, what was even that and she leaned in closer and grabbed the boy’s hard tightly as she saw them gathering a blue cube.

She heard them talking about turning them into whatever because of some Berenson & Co- was that name? Either ways Carmen could not let that happen.

“I don’t remember Freddy Fazbear playing a part in Egyptian history…” Hayden muttered.

“That’s because it’s not there, come follow me. Hold your camera tighter and don’t leave my sight.” She grabbed his wrist as she slowly and quietly walked towards them. She pulled her phone- just now remembering that she had it, “Stay behind me, don’t make any noise, please Hayden.” She told the kid as she looked at him and then back at the alien robot demon called Erek with the rest of her schoolmates. She grabbed her phone and coughed loudly as she began to make some noise so the attention was turned at her, she raised her phone high in the air then lowered it as she glared at Erek.

“What do you think you’re doing?” She asked the ghostly alien robot, “And pray tell me, why should I not call the police?” She would not call the police of course, she did not know what type of monster Erek was yet and she did not know what could happen them but she knew right now if he did something Carmen would throw her phone at the blue crystal thing and break it. It seemed to be a source of power for him. She walked closer to him, making sure to keep a safe distant so nothing could happen to her, “Are you really about to turn a bunch of kids into monsters like you? Is that why you have been so weird, you are looking for victims? For innocent naive little kids?” She then turned to the crowd of teenagers behind her

“And you guys,” She said pointing to them, “Do you guys lack your senses? Were You guys never taught not to trust strangers, especially alien robots whatever he is strangers?” She was speaking loudly and a lot, something she rarely did, but she was anxious and panicked. She could not let anything happen to them, she could not leave with the guilt that would follow if she just ran away with Hayden. She could not let them turn into monsters or worst die by the hands of this mad man.

Carmen was definitely no wonder woman, but she had to protect this kids, especially since they lacked the senses to protect themselves, “Tell me,” She lowered her voice, ''Why i should not break this blue crystal right now. I won’t let you ruin this kids, alien, they have their whole in front of them."

If anything goes wrong, Carmen was glad to have Hayden with his camera. She could figure out a plan where he would blind them and she would take the crystal far away and give it to the police. Still, Carmen could not believe her friend’s friend was an evil monster recruiting a crowd of teens to do his evil deeds or maybe he wished to kll them.

Yes, he had been acting weirdly but she never thought this would be his objective.

Can followed after Scarlett, trepidation in every step. Every part of their being was at odds- Tell a teacher. They wouldn’t believe you. Call security. Why wasn’t security here yet? Only their unbridled curiosity, partnered with their innate desire to help, kept them moving forward, putting one burgundy sneaker in front of the other until they stepped into the room where their entire group had re-converged.

They’d only caught the tail-end of Erek’s speech, but it was still, just… incomprehensible. Words swirled around in their mind, ones tha they could never hope to understand, but despite everything, they felt the weight of Erek’s world. “They just… they killed all of your kind?” Tears pricked at Cam’s eyes. Despite everything that Erek had revealed in the last few minutes, Camlyn couldn’t help but empathize with him, he definitely was, at least, in part, human- even if it was just an act to blend in, she doubted he lacked any emotions. She wondered if he had a family, friends… To lose your… creators, and then everyone that’s like you…

Camlyn kneeled next to Erek. They worked with sick and dying animals all the time, and while Erek was far from any animal they’d ever worked on- hell, any animal on Earth- they just had a… feeling, they guessed. When someone- or something’s- time was up. Somewhere behind them, they heard who they’d assumed was Carmen threatening to call the police. “We are not calling the police, Carmen,” Camlyn said, fighting to keep their voice steady. They stood up facing Carmen- they were a bit too short to meet her at eye-level, but they met her gaze anyways. “He’s dying. He told us his entire species was wiped out. Have some fucking empathy.” Camlyn spat out the last words, and clenched their fist. They wouldn’t fight Carmen- not physically, anyways- but they weren’t about to keel over and let Carmen make all the decisions.

“We’re not just some… some idiot teens, Carmen. We can make our own decisions.” Camlyn glanced at Erek guiltily. “And if Erek is telling the truth- and he has no reason to lie, mind you- we’re all in trouble. Even you. If you want to just not do anything, just forget what happened here, then fine. Be my guest. But that’s your choice. I, myself, am not just gonna do nothing. I can’t.” Carmen turned back around, face red. They knelt back down, and thrust out their arm, putting a hand on the glowing blue box.

As more souls flooded into the room, everything became a hazy blur to Josias. The cacophony of their whispers and shouts merged into a sinister symphony that drowned out any semblance of rational thought. Suddenly, a girl with purple hair appeared before him, but her arrival failed to assuage his anxiety. Something was amiss, and Josias could feel it deep within the marrow of his bones. Automatically, his mind raced as he frantically searched the crowd for his sibling Delphi. Yet, she was nowhere to be seen. His heart seized up with panic, and Josias whirled around still on his knees, hopelessly searching for an answer. It was then that Nate slithered in, the very same boy who claimed to be Delphi’s bosom companion. The thought of Nate without his sister caused Josias to recoil with disgust, and he pushed past the throng of good Samaritans helping poor Erek. His eyes combed the room one last time. “Delphi?” he asked, his voice trembling. Sensing that something was off, Josias broke for the door, only sparing a dark glance at Nate as he brushed past.

Hayden and Carmen were on their way in as he hurried out, driven by an insatiable need to find Delphi. Josias stumbled into the exhibit, the darkness swallowing him whole. The crunch of broken glass underfoot alerted him to someone approaching. He tensed, ready to find his sibling, but it was only Camlyn and Scarlett. Josias pushed past them hurriedly, his nerves exploding in a frenzy of urgent fear. He had to find his sister; her safety was his only concern.

As Josias fled the madness lurking within, his eyes caught sight of a darker shadow skulking among the ruined remnants of the Egypt exhibit. With a feverish intensity, he bellowed out a name that hung on the tip of his tongue, “Delphi?” The shadow wobbled and swayed, teetering deeper into the blackness that engulfed them both. Gasping, Josias pressed on. “Who’s there?” he demanded, his voice cutting through the exhibit like a sharpened blade.

Suddenly, a familiar voice responded, trembling and strained, “Josias?”

At once, Josias knew that it was his beloved sister Delphi who had answered his call. Euphoria and trepidation collided within him as he scurried onward towards her. As the shadows parted, he discovered her there, a delicate and frail figure in the eerie gloom.

“Delphi,” he hissed, in disbelief at the sight of her. Her countenance was fraught with distress, her knees bent into an “almost” crouch. “What happened?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Delphi’s dull and distant gaze slid from her brother’s face, unable to meet his scrutiny. “It is nothing,” she murmured, shrugging him off. Delphi’s head whipped around, as if searching. “Have you seen Nate? Or Saige? She has purple hair. Not part of the group.” It was silent. Till it looked as though Delphi turned to look at her brother, but Josias couldn’t be sure with the lack of light. “Del, it’s alright. They made it, they’re safe.” Josias… wanted to lie. Tell her that they had both looked for her or at least her anxious for her return. But he couldn’t even get those words out. Instead, Josias guided Delphi back the way he came, arm supporting her.

Delphi almost took them both down.

Reverently, Josias clasped at her, refusing to let her go. “Delphi, you’re hurt,” he proclaimed, scouring her body for the source of her injuries. He observed that she was wounded, drenched in grime and misery.

Delphi averted her eyes, reluctant to confide in her brother. “We should leave,” she implored, accepting his assistance as they made their way out. Josias only needed to take two stumbling steps forward to realize this wouldn’t work. Swiftly placing his hands under her knees, Josias scooped Delphi into his arms and carried her back. As they departed the shadows, Josias’ furious glare fell upon Nate. Josias perceived that something was fundamentally awry with Delphi’s acquaintance. But for now, his focus was resolute, guaranteeing his sister would receive the care she deserves.

Delphi’s face lit up passing Nate, warming at knowing he was safe, but Josias hurried pass, whispering to his sister. “You missed a lot.” He mentioned, watching as Jamie’s hand went to hover over the blue box.

The not-so gentle pitter-patter of contemplative footsteps had approached the opened door. It was easily recognizable as being the clatter of more than one person. And unsurprisingly, Hayden was anything other than quiet. Following the footsteps, a strong and defensive voice had shot through the tense air, demanding answers.

''Why i should not break this blue crystal right now. I won’t let you ruin this kids, alien, they have their whole life in front of them."

The room had gone silent and her voice made a shiver crawl up Halia’s spine, raising the hairs on her arm. She had pondered for a brief second given Carmen’s words, but, her opinion remained unchanged. She wasn’t blindly trusting Erek, he was almost a friend to her and he was dying. “I don’t think we should jump to conclusions”, her voice was soft with a purposeful calm. Halia had hoped her calmness would promote rationality. Erek had been the one shot after all. “I think the real threat here are the potential killers that could come back any minute now, the same people who shot Erek”, she said with silent confidence. What if Erek wasn’t lying and he needed help? The ‘what-ifs’ were endless but one thing was certain, Halia was willing to help. She knew that this would end terribly either way, she sighed.

Another series of footsteps were approaching, this time less cautiously and much faster. Cam stood at the door, wide eyed as their gaze fell upon Erek’s troubled state. Without missing a second, Cam had responded to Carmen’s accusations, in a similar manner but more agressive than Halia. She shifted uncomfortably and stared at the door to see who else would make an entrance.

". . .But that’s your choice. I, myself, am not just gonna do nothing. I can’t.”

They had placed their hand over the glowing crystal and soon Halia had followed suite. Meeting Cam’s eyes, she answered, "I’m with you, I’m following my gut, and my gut is telling me that he’s telling the truth”.

Jamie turned, speaking more than they’d ever spoken to any of their classmates. “Ok, Carmen Sandiego. I don’t know where in the world you are, but I’m definitely still asleep, and even if this was real, why do you care about me? I don’t even know who you are. Just worry about yourself and the others if you want, but leave me alone. It’s people like you why I don’t want friends. If I get blown to smithereens, who cares? If my organs are salvageable, donate them. I’m just waiting for permission because I don’t do things without checking if it’s ok, especially when someone is obviously dying.”

Day 1

“Within the depths of my mind, a tempest brews, a storm of fears and doubts that define me.”

The day began like any other, the sun's rays casting a tone of warmth and promise upon our arrival at the Egypt exhibit. My groupmates, Scarlett, Carmen, Camilyn, Hayden, Delphi, Josias, Jamie, Halia, and Erek, all together, seemingly random yet not I'm not so sure. I look at where I am now, and I wonder if this was truly a coincidence.

The encounter with Saige was curious, to say the least. Her appearance coinciding with the current events felt too much of a coincidence. Her enigmatic nature echoes the very essence of shadows, blending in with the darkness she seemed to command. And yet, her intentions remain a shrouded veil, concealing a cryptic truth.

Delphi, my ever-curious friend, showed a peculiar interest in the state of the Egyptian god of death. Anubis watched over us, his silent gaze foretelling a fate that came all too soon. The mysteries deepened as the lights flickered, the dimming illumination revealing cracks in my fractal reality.

Then came the blackout, a veil of darkness I was meant to be in. Chaos ensured and screams echoed throughout every chamber and building. But all that noise seemed to flatten when a gunshot was heard, the sound echoed through the darkness, and Erek's anguished cry pierced the veil, pulling me toward an unfathomable truth.

As I vented into the room, a disturbing fate awaited before my very eyes. Erek was not Erek. Instead what lay in his wake, an android amongst humans, his metallic nature exposing a truth that shattered the illusion of normalcy. His claims of emotions and memories counteracting everything media has shown us. Furthermore, his claims of being hunted by the ominous Berenson and CO added a layer of complexity, or should I say even more uncertainty.

My pen trembled in my grasp as I struggled to see the lies behind the truth. Skepticism intermingled with curiosity, weaving a dance that mirrored my surroundings. Erek's plea to "save the world" sounded more like a command to "end the world." The truth, heavy and elusive, hunted me like phantoms in the shadows.

The device he presented, granting the power to transform into any animal that is touched, seemed fantastical, mythical in nature. The allure of such power enticed my groupmates, Jamie, Halia, and Camilyn to reach out tentatively. Their reasoning slipped like grains of sand in an hourglass. Yet my reasoning held firm, a rock amidst a stormy sea, questioning the authenticity of it all.

Erek revelations painted a grim canvas, yet the shadows concealed a deeper truth that I yearned to uncover. As events unfold, my role in Erek's plan, is unknown to even me, yet my thirst for knowledge and determination to seek truth burn within me. The shadows may be daunting, but I will not be swayed, for I am Nathaniel, and my Journey has only just begun. And I will not fall puppet to a scheme yet undiscovered.

As the room pulsed with a sudden silence, Nate’s heart pounded in his chest, torn between the gravity of Erek’s revelation and the lingering doubts in his mind. The flickering light cast eccentric shadows across the group of students gathered around Erek’s broken form, their expressions a mix of hopefulness and shock. Nate knew instantly what he had heard: Erek’s plans to send a bunch of teens to fight a global company.

But what made Nate pause was Erek’s warning to Nate specifically. Beyond this door is the second half of the story, and although Erek’s voice bleeds urgency, the seed of doubt had already been planted in Nate’s mind.

His gaze flicked to Saige, the newcomer whose appearance seemed to coincide with the unraveling chaos. Suspicion clouded Nate’s judgment; his grip held strongly on the door, demanding it to open and for him to hear the truth from the gunslinger; yet he knew they were already long gone he couldn’t help but wise otherwise.

The device Erek exposed, capable of granting the ability to transform into any animal, sounded like a dream Delphi would tell him. An extraordinary claim with zero scientific backing. Nate wasn’t a science guy but when it came to robots and death, he had already delved into the realm of ‘how much sense does this make?’ How could such a device exist, and how has it possibly stayed hidden for so long?

The fact that Erek had been lying to everyone in the school his whole life cast a shadow of doubt over his motives. What else was Erek hiding, and how could they be sure that he wasn’t leading them into a trap? And so when he looked around, his brain filled with the burdens a 16-year-old should never face. The room seemed to close in on him, suffocating him with the burden of his life and possibly the world in his hand. Even though he dreamt of this moment, how could he make a decision based on the little information he was given?

“Too much…” Nate whispered a little too loud. He hesitated, his hand hovering over his messager bag as though his notebook was calling for him. The clash of doubt and fulfillment within him seemed to find a stillness when he looked at his book. An urge to take his notebook out overtook him…

With a deep breath, Nate made a silent decision. He would approach this situation with the utmost caution, keeping a vigilant eye on Saige and everyone else here. He would question everything and everyone, and whatever words he said from now on would be lies.

Nate began to write when Carmen burst through the door. Her words held a blend of curiosity and defiance, voicing Nate’s hidden thoughts. Carmen’s boldness contrasted with her usual reserved demeanor, and her need to protect the group was commendable. Including Scarlett’s words, Nate was conflicted; they had him poised between the allure of extraordinary power and the peril of blind trust.

To ease his mind he must document everything; to not get caught in his lies he must write the truth. But his fingers struggled to keep steady, the weight of the situation bearing down, and the look of Josias frightening him.

Then, amidst the chaos, Nate’s gaze found Delphi, Followed by the hateful eyes of their twin. Still, the sight of his friend entering the picture seemed to ground him. A sense of calm washed over him, allowing him to regain his composure. With newfound focus, he managed to put pen to paper, scribbling down his thoughts and the unfolding events.

“Within the depths of my mind, a tempest brews, a storm of fears and doubts that define me,” Nate wrote, the ink flowing from the pen he stole reflected his fears and belief.
