As more souls flooded into the room, everything became a hazy blur to Josias. The cacophony of their whispers and shouts merged into a sinister symphony that drowned out any semblance of rational thought. Suddenly, a girl with purple hair appeared before him, but her arrival failed to assuage his anxiety. Something was amiss, and Josias could feel it deep within the marrow of his bones. Automatically, his mind raced as he frantically searched the crowd for his sibling Delphi. Yet, she was nowhere to be seen. His heart seized up with panic, and Josias whirled around still on his knees, hopelessly searching for an answer. It was then that Nate slithered in, the very same boy who claimed to be Delphi’s bosom companion. The thought of Nate without his sister caused Josias to recoil with disgust, and he pushed past the throng of good Samaritans helping poor Erek. His eyes combed the room one last time. “Delphi?” he asked, his voice trembling. Sensing that something was off, Josias broke for the door, only sparing a dark glance at Nate as he brushed past.
Hayden and Carmen were on their way in as he hurried out, driven by an insatiable need to find Delphi. Josias stumbled into the exhibit, the darkness swallowing him whole. The crunch of broken glass underfoot alerted him to someone approaching. He tensed, ready to find his sibling, but it was only Camlyn and Scarlett. Josias pushed past them hurriedly, his nerves exploding in a frenzy of urgent fear. He had to find his sister; her safety was his only concern.
As Josias fled the madness lurking within, his eyes caught sight of a darker shadow skulking among the ruined remnants of the Egypt exhibit. With a feverish intensity, he bellowed out a name that hung on the tip of his tongue, “Delphi?” The shadow wobbled and swayed, teetering deeper into the blackness that engulfed them both. Gasping, Josias pressed on. “Who’s there?” he demanded, his voice cutting through the exhibit like a sharpened blade.
Suddenly, a familiar voice responded, trembling and strained, “Josias?”
At once, Josias knew that it was his beloved sister Delphi who had answered his call. Euphoria and trepidation collided within him as he scurried onward towards her. As the shadows parted, he discovered her there, a delicate and frail figure in the eerie gloom.
“Delphi,” he hissed, in disbelief at the sight of her. Her countenance was fraught with distress, her knees bent into an “almost” crouch. “What happened?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Delphi’s dull and distant gaze slid from her brother’s face, unable to meet his scrutiny. “It is nothing,” she murmured, shrugging him off. Delphi’s head whipped around, as if searching. “Have you seen Nate? Or Saige? She has purple hair. Not part of the group.” It was silent. Till it looked as though Delphi turned to look at her brother, but Josias couldn’t be sure with the lack of light. “Del, it’s alright. They made it, they’re safe.” Josias… wanted to lie. Tell her that they had both looked for her or at least her anxious for her return. But he couldn’t even get those words out. Instead, Josias guided Delphi back the way he came, arm supporting her.
Delphi almost took them both down.
Reverently, Josias clasped at her, refusing to let her go. “Delphi, you’re hurt,” he proclaimed, scouring her body for the source of her injuries. He observed that she was wounded, drenched in grime and misery.
Delphi averted her eyes, reluctant to confide in her brother. “We should leave,” she implored, accepting his assistance as they made their way out. Josias only needed to take two stumbling steps forward to realize this wouldn’t work. Swiftly placing his hands under her knees, Josias scooped Delphi into his arms and carried her back. As they departed the shadows, Josias’ furious glare fell upon Nate. Josias perceived that something was fundamentally awry with Delphi’s acquaintance. But for now, his focus was resolute, guaranteeing his sister would receive the care she deserves.
Delphi’s face lit up passing Nate, warming at knowing he was safe, but Josias hurried pass, whispering to his sister. “You missed a lot.” He mentioned, watching as Jamie’s hand went to hover over the blue box.
