It’s so interesting because alone, Val and Dan are such TOXIC people. Like completely, fully toxic. They make each other better and it’s so interesting to see how Val reverts to her old ways when Dan is gone.

As she knew him well enough to know he wasn’t planning on coming back by his own will, which could potentially just mean never.

It could, yes, very much mean that. He can hold a grudge and after fighting with Val about their daughter’s pregnancy - and some words said- dan probably left before Val even got out that she was also pregnant. I’m almost wondering if the reason dan doesn’t know is because she just took a pregnancy test and (like Jess didn’t go to the hospital when she left dori), Val also didn’t go to the hospital because she was just upset.
