He was followed.

The man’s voice was like the chilling bite of the wind, bringing back an old, familiar pain radiating through his bones. The fractures where he bled near-death stung his chest like needles. Dominic stood wide eyed, frozen, his body refusing to move. He huffed through gritted teeth, palms shaking by his sides as he felt the looming presence all around him. He became acutely aware of his surroundings. The eyes which had refused to leave seemed to concentrate on him further. Their presence grew, as if they were wrapped all around him, watching his every move. Even in the hallways, his dorm, and now standing outside any part of the academy itself β€” something continued to pry into his thoughts. He couldn’t tell which direction they came from, but he’d felt this energy ever since he decided to leave. But what else could they possibly be, other than Vincenzo himself, who’d somehow found Dominic everywhere he went?

There was no chance he’d escape, was there? Even though he’d hid his plan, he’d failed to notice these eyes that tracked him. His plan was found out since the very beginning, and he foolishly allowed himself to feel hope for once. Hope that he could outrun this darkness that chased him his entire life.

The shadows fell around him, yet this man kept his cocky tone. He might have given Dominic an opening to escape, but he knew very well he wouldn’t run far. The adrenaline from his earlier run coursed through his veins, and his lungs felt tight from only a few steps.

He took a deep breath. He’d been silent for a while, granted, in shock, but he couldn’t afford to further anger this unstable man.

Dominic slowly turned around, letting his tired, dark-rimmed eyes stare at Vincenzo with a sour expression on his face. His gaze then travelled to the flask in his hand. Drinking at a time like this would be more than unwise β€” he’d be choosing death. No matter his plan, he wasn’t going to escape from Vincenzo’s clutches. All he could do was play along as he always did, and hope that ingesting alcohol wasn’t a necessary part of it.

His feet felt heavy as he walked towards the man.

β€œI didn’t…” Expect to see you here? Would that sound defiant? There had to be a phrasing that sounded… neutral. Rather… β€œHello,” he forced out, barely audible. Even the howl of the wind was louder than his voice, but he couldn’t gather the strength to speak up. He crossed his arms behind his back, digging his nails deep into his sleeves, as if he could claw through his own skin. Just the sight of him made his blood start to boil again, all smug while Dominic shook under his gaze alone. He began to feel warm under his sweater, aware of the weight against his back.

β€œI… Wanted to investigate something. I thought I heardβ€” well, rather felt something… Outside of the Coven.” His gaze darted away to his feet, anywhere but those prying blue eyes.
