She nodded. “Her name is Vedetta.” She continued, her voice slipping into her native accent as she said her pet’s name. “I got her when my brother started his first year here so that I wouldn’t be lonely.” She added, seeing the hesitation in his hands and hoping that if she opened up a bit more, it would help him be more sure about going with her.
She smiled when he finally gave in, putting his hand on top of hers. Taking hold of his hand, she started heading toward her room, the bows on her braids bouncing as she walked. She clearly wasn’t changing his mind about the costumes, but that didn’t discourage her from her actual mission. She led him through the halls of the school, away from the party and towards the Enigma Stag dormitory.
“I hope you’re not afraid of small animals.” Lenore remarked as she opened the door to her room. She realized that she probably should have asked before dragging him all the way here. She didn’t stop after entering the room, instead heading straight for her pet’s cage. “Ciao, mia preziosa.[1]” She cooed as she opened the cage door, lifting the ferret out, and holding her close to her chest.
“Close the door behind you and then sit on the bed.” She instructed, turning to face Nic. Leading by example, she sat down first, petting the top of the animal’s head with her finger. “Vedetta, this is Nic.” She spoke softly, making eye contact with her pet before looking up at the man.
