Representing Islam correctly

This is not for Episode, lol I’m never writing there again. So I’m a Christian and I don’t really know much about this religon. However, I am writing a Wattpad novel that deals with this. I’m curious on these things, i would look it up on Google but I find it very misleading sometimes. So if you are part of one of those categories please help me answer the following questions:

  • What are your ideals

  • Some issues and hate you get or may get for being part of this religon

  • Do people treat you differently and how?

  • Are their branches, if so which?

  • Who do you pray to?

  • Who is Mohammed and what does he mean to you?

  • What is considered sinful?

  • What is the purpose of Rahmmadan

  • Why do you fast in General?

  • What is the purpose of the hijab

  • How old do you have to be to wear a hijab

  • Do you have to wear a hijab all the time

  • Any other extra things I should know in order to not misrepresent.

Thank you for the tag. I am not Muslim though. But my sissy @Kiwi is.

Sissy, maybe you’d like to share your knowledge with us? I am actually curious to know some of this too.

I respect all religions and follow none. (Though my family practices Hinduism.)

Thank you Shanni for the tag, yes I’m Muslim!

Mohammad is the last prophet. He is the one who created Islam the religion. He means a lot to us

I’ve heard some about him.

Could you explain more about him.

I’ve heard some people say something whenever they say his name. My friend use to do that quite avidly whenever I spoke his name. All I know is that its in Arabic and your supposed to say it when you mention his name?

Sorry if I’m being a bother :cold_sweat::cold_sweat: I’d ask my friend but we’re on break and her phone is broken.

Islam is the belief that there’s only one God (reffered as Allah in Quran) and Muhammad is the messenger of him. It’s believed that there’s an afterlife, and there will be a Day of Judgement, in which everyone will either go to heaven or hell.

Islam acknowlegdes the three holy books that was sent before Quran and its prophets. However, those books are considered altered. There are 25 prophets mentioned in Quran. Muhammad is the last prophet.

There are four archangels named: Jibrael, Mikael, Israfil, and Azrael.

The Five Pillar of Islam (rules all Muslims should follow)

  1. Shahadah: Believing in shahadah, which is: There is no other god except Allah(one God) and Prophet Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
  2. Salat: Paraying five times a day,
  3. Fasting during Ramadan
  4. Zakat: Donating a part of your savings to charity.
  5. Hajj: Pilgrimage to Mecca

There’s a lot of Islamaphobia, partially because of 9/11. I heard that before 9/11 people blamed the Irish for terrorism, now it’s Muslims. I also believe this might be rooted in racism too, Quran was sent the Arabia, so obviously since it “belongs” to brown people, there will be racism. (Quran is actually universal. It was sent to Arabia because it was considered one of most corrupted places back then. Quran was teaching values.)

Basically what I wrote above. Islam is not much different since it’s an Abrahamic religion, but some people don’t see it that way

Yes, Sunni and Shia are the two main ones. Just a tip: They do not get a long very well.

There are other denominations too, @PensiveShadow is a part of Nation of Islam!

Simply put, to Allah.

Muhammad is the last prophet. He received ayats from Allah for several years (starting 22 December 609 CE and ending 632) through Jibrael and he wrote Quran himself.

There are a lot, I’m going to just mention Al-Kabirah for now. These are considered major ones, any sin except these will be forgiven by Allah. As long as you pray for forgiveness.

  • Shirk (Associating Allah with partners, worshipping someone else)
  • Believing in magic
  • Murder
  • Riba (gambling, gaining money in immoral ways)
  • Eating wealth of the orphan
  • Turning back in battle
  • Slandering chaste woman

Ramadan is the holiest month, it’s to separate you from commiting sins, immoral acts and such. As far as I know, some people say fasting is a way to understand the poor, so it’s encouraged to donate charities in Ramadan.

To tame your body, and increase your self-control

Purpose of hijab is for modesty and privacy. You can still dress modestly without having a hijab. Hijab is encouraged for woman to wear it. (there’s no age limit since it’s about puberty, but basically after 15 years old it is highly encouraged)
You don’t have to wear it when you are with your family members (parents and siblings, regardless of their gender). You don’t have to wear it indoors when you are with your female friends, but if you are outdoors, you must wear it all times, even if you are with your family.

I hope that helps  sorry for keeping you waiting

Thank you Shani!

One main issue we have encountered is that we’re misogynistic. I must admit, some of our laws are kinda sexist.

Like, women can’t marry outside of Islam, but men can. I find that unfair, because the guy I love is a Christian.

very unfair is correct.

And I’m just gonna have to marry a Muslim man in the future.

Goodness thank you! I have some questions could you clarify?

Christians believe God is all forgiving regardless of what sin you do. As long as you repent, you’ll be forgiven.

In Islam, if you break these rules is there no returning? Do you believe God will never forgive you? What about a child? If they commit a sin isn’t there no hope of redemption for them?

The book I’m writing for does include magic, magic is a term used for these abilities. If I were to write a Sunni/Islam character how should I reperesent them in terms of magic to my book?

Just to clarify does this mean retreat? As in if an Islam/Sunni character fought in battle they fought until they died or made it out?

Is this a specific rule written in your Quran or is it just a social rule?

It’s same as Christianity, you have to repent, but it’s very hard, especially shirk. Major sins (except shirk) need major changes. For example, you can donate to charities, but if you are donating using the money you won by gambling, it’s a bigger sin. You need to “change” fully and consistently, and pray for forgiveness.

Now, some people do think shirk is impossible to repent (because it’s basically not believing in Allah), but if you were a kuffar (unbeliever) or you were unaware of Islam, you will be forgiven as long as you believe in shahadah and follow the five pillars of Islam

Quran talks about miracle’s of Jesus, so you could make it as a miracle. If this Muslim character can do magic, it’s because they believe that Allah gave them a miracle/blessed them.

It’s more like turning your back to others. Like running away from it, when others keep fighting. It’s considered a sin, because anyone who dies fighting for Islam will be a martyr (shadid). And will be forgiven of their sins, because they died fighting for Islam.

Random question, how’d you get rid of the the money then? Do you just return it?

Okay, thanks

I understand. I’m sorry if this come off as rude or stereotypical:

But do some believe that the people who attacked the twin towers in 9/11 are martyrs?

 Thanks so much! You’ve helped me so much, and using this I can confidently say I can write a Islam character well. (At least a Sunni character)

Yes, returning the money is possibly the best thing.

I’ve never seen any, but there are probably some extremists who believe that. In reality, it would be considered same as suicide, and it’s a sin because Allah is the only one who can take another’s life. So, even if their personal beliefs consider them as martyrs, technically they are just sinners.

You are very much welcome! Good luck with your story!

Just to clarify for everyone, this determines what denomination of Islam you’re apart of. Some are strict on it and some aren’t. In mine, we prefer you do but it’s all up to choice.
