I shrugged. “Maybe. Also, don’t wink. You look like you’re having a spasm.” I deadpanned.
“Excuse me?” he crossed his arms and shot her a confused look. “Ya know, while learning Japanese, you should also learn some kindness.”
“Right…Sorry.” I muttered. That honestly hurt, but I sure as h*ll wasn’t going to tell him that or let it show. I refuse.
“Apology accepted.” he said with a straight face. “So… what are we gonna do now?” he asked. He was getting pretty bored.
I shrugged. “I really want to get to know Rain better.” I said, smiling at her.
“Cool! Then how a question for a question?” he asked.
“Ok. Let’s start out tame and get gradually…less tame. What’s your favorite color?” I asked. “I think you can guess mine.” I laughed.
“Green. And yours is pretty obvious; black.” he said.

Location: Stables
“Hello Campers!” I say in my microphone, looking out to the mass mob of kids in front of me. “I hope you are all well rested after yesterday’s activities, since we will all be horseback riding today!”
I turn to our two riding counselors, and gesture to them so the campers know who they are. “Meet Summer and Xander, your two riding counselors who will lead today’s activities. Summer will be leading the ride through the woods for the more experienced riders, and Xander will be teaching all of the beginners back here at the stables.”
I let the campers break off into their groups as I help Summer and Xander out with sorting each camper with a horse.
I tried to ignore the people snickering over my outfit , glancing over at Rain. “I can change if you don’t want me to get your clothes dirty…” I said.
Rain Bi Hexie
“It’s okay! I think you looking cute!” Rain assured her, shooting death glares at the people who were laughing at her. She tied her silky black hair into a ponytail and straightened the wrinkles out of her exercise outfit , and she handed Jane a water bottle. “Stay hydrate, okay?”
“Thanks. You stay hydrated too.” I said, taking the water bottle. “Have you ridden horses before? I actually have, believe it or not.”
Rain Bi Hexie
“Oh, no.” Rain shook her head. “No time. Never have time.” She looked up at the elegant, mighty animals, backing away in fear as one suddenly snorted and pawed the ground. She clung fearfully to Jane.
“You’re ok…it won’t hurt you. Just stay calm, and everything will be ok. Horses are very gentle. Just be calm or you’ll startle it.” I said, my arm wrapped around her. “Xander will help you. Ok?”
Rain Bi Hexie
“O-Okay…” Rain said, still not letting go of Jane. “Y-You’ll ride with me?” She asked Jane, her eyes wide like a little kid asking to bunk in their parents’ room.
“I was going to go ride in the woods with the more advanced riders, but I can definitely stay back with you so you feel safe.” I said. “Come on. Let’s go get helmets and riding gear on and find a horse.”
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain nodded timidly and went along with Jane to get helmets and gear. Once they were both ready, she followed Jane to the stables. She made sure to stay in the center of the hall, away from the stall doors lining the walls on either side, and stay behind Jane just in case. Just being close to Jane made Rain feel safer. They looked around until they came to the end of the stables, where three promising looking horses waited: A grey mare, a younger white and brown mare, and a dappled stalion. “Which one?” Rain asked.
“Hmmm…since you’re a beginner you should ride a mare because they’re much calmer than the stallions. How about the grey one? The older ones have more experience and are gentler.”
Rain Bi Hexie
“I like that one. She’s pretty.” Rain slowly approached the grey mare a patted her muzzle. She turned to Jane. “Like you.”
My face turned red, the back of my neck burning. “T-thanks…y-you too…so, shall we get her saddled up?” I asked, unlocking the door and leading the mare out.
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain nodded and helped Jane put the saddle on, humming her newest composition as she did. Once they were done, she was able to carefully mount the mare after a fair bit of struggling. She clung onto the horn of the saddle for dear life and waited impatiently for Jane as the other campers began riding off into the distance. “Hurry, hurry!” She urged Jane playfully.
“Do you want me to ride with you? Or I can get my own horse and ride next to you?” I questions her when she was safely mounted.
Rain Bi Hexie
“With me. Please.” Rain said, trying not to sound too desparate. She patted the space on the saddle next to her.
“Ok. I’ll get in front and you just hold on to my back.” I said, mounting the horse and grabbing the reins. “I’m going to make the horse walk, ok?” I asked.
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain hugged tightly onto Jane’s waist and braced herself. “O-Okay…” She stuttered quietly. “N-not too fast, yes?” She asked.
“Right. Just a slow walk.” I said, gently squeezing the horse’s sides with my legs, clucking. The horse began to walk slowly. “You ok?” I asked Rain.
Rain Bi Hexie
As the horse started moving, Rain began to relax. “Yeah. I’m getting better.” She said when Jane asked her if she was okay. Her grip loosened, but she still hugged Jane’s waist, resting her head on her shoulder.
I nodded, blushing. “So, tell me about yourself. You’re not American, I can guess.” I said.
Rain Bi Hexie
“No. From Japan.” Rain said. “I’m a singer. In a band with my brothers. It’s called Hex3. It’s a pun, get it?” She asked Jane, giggling a bit.
“Is that your last name? That is pretty funny. My last name is kinda funny too. For me, it’s just ironic.” I said, shrugging.
Rain Bi Hexie
“Why is that?” Rain asked as their horse began navigating beside a winding stream.
“Well, my parents are pastors. I’m an atheist, soooo…yeah. Jane means ‘God is gracious. Not to me, because I don’t believe in one. I’m also Pansexual, so I was ostracized.” I said.”
Rain Bi Hexie
“I’m sorry.” Rain said. “I don’t think there’s God either. If there was, it wouldn’t have taken this long for me to get vacation.” She joked. “Or to meet you.”
I blushed, snickering at her joke. “You should see the televised church services. I look like I want to kill everyone there…Definitely not fun.”
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain laughed as their horse kept trotting down the winding path. Eventually, they arrived at a small lake with a waterfall. “Beautiful…” Rain gasped. She hadn’t ever been able to see nature like this back home.
“Woah…that’s insane…” I muttered, the light casting rainbows over the water. “It’s like a giant prism.” I said, dismounting. “Need help getting off?” I asked Rain.
Rain Bi Hexie
“Yes please…” Rain said, still overwhelming by the beauty of the waterfall. “Is all of America this way?” She asked.
I helped her off the horse, shaking my head. “Sadly, no. I’m surprised this is here. I’ve heard Japan is beautiful. I wish I could go…” I said wistfully.
Rain BI Hexie
“I’ve heard that, too, but I’ve never been outside of the cities.” Rain admitted. She walked over to the lake and scooped some of the pure, crystal clear water in her hand, drinking it. “Mmm…” She said, licking her lips. “You shoud try. Very cold and sweet.” She scooped up another handful for their mare to drink.
“Not so sure if that’s safe, but eh. You only live once.” I said, walking to the lake and taking a drink. “Oh yeah…that’s really good.” I said.
Rain Bi Hexie
“Isn’t it?” Rain agreed, rubbing the mare’s snout. “It’s clear enough. Should be safe.” She went and sat by the side of the lake, twirling her fingers through the shallow water and causing the rainbows to break up into delicate ripples. “Sit with me?” She asked Jane.
“Sure.” I said, standing and sitting next to her, slipping my shoes and socks off, dangling my feet in the water. “Holy s*it, that’s cold! Sorry.” I yelped.
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain giggled as Jane yanked her feet out of the water. “No more drinking, I guess.” She said, and she rolled up her leggings so that she could dip her toes in too. She yelped just like Jane had. “Ooh! Chilly!” She giggled.
I laughed at her expression, putting my feet back in. “You’ll get used to it. It’s refreshing…” I said, smiling.
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain smiled slyly at Jane for a second. Suddenly, she jumped into the water, splashing Jane and getting both of them soaking wet. It was freezing cold, but worth it for the look on her face.
“Uh oh, I don’t like that loo-ahhh!” I yelped as Rain jumped into the water, soaking my. “Oh, you’re on!” U laughed, jumping in after her and splashing her.
Rain Bi Hexie
Rain ducked under the water’s surface for cover and swam underneath Jane, grabbing her ankles and pulling her down just enough to submerge her for a second. As soon as they both resurfaced, Rain attacked Jane with a barrage of huge splashes. “You can’t beat the master!” She teased.
Rain vanished under the water, causing me to look around, trying to find her. My question was answered when my foot was grabbed and I was pulled under the water slightly. When we resurfaced, she attacked me with splashes. I laughed, splashing back.
Rain Bi Hexie
“What kind of music you like?” Rain asked Jane once their water fight had calmed down.
“Evanesance, Black Veil Brides, Breaking Benjamin…oh don’t get me started on the Diary of Jane jokes…” I groaned. “Every single person…”
Rain Bi Hexie
“I’ve never heard of those…” Rain said, feeling a little embarassed. “Are they good? What genre?”
“Hard rock. I don’t think you’d like them.” I said, floating on my back, my black hair fanning around me.
Rain Bi Hexie
“You don’t know that.” Rain said a little defensively. “Try me. You have some?” She asked to hear one of their songs.
I swam over to where I’d put my phone, playing Diary of Jane. “This is the song people always tease me about.” I said, laughing.
