So the new Queer contest is. .

Just not welcoming, I guess?

Okay, that’s enough but there’s more. Besides gatekeeping and language policing.

My opinion on all of this is… I mean you want people to accept you, but the whole concept of LGBTQ+ as I see it now is kinda pushing non-lgbtq+ people. Don’t participate, it’s not for you, it’s for us. I wonder if it ever occurred to this type of people that if they were more welcoming, maybe the social climate around monorities would be much better? That’s just a theory but oh well.

Another point. Why are you trying to say to straight people that they should give minorities a chance on winning? Of course one would need to make research on the subject so that the story makes sense and doesn’t portray one completely wrong and unrealistically, but the fact that you are part of lgbtq+ solely doesn’t make you a good writer. I think in any contest, or even out of the contest, just in writing, skill and work stand above experience.

And the last point. Who are you to judge why anyone would join the contest? Why do you assume non-lgbtq+ would only join this contest “just for woke points” or “to win a contest”.

I don’t think it’s needed to point who said the things above, that I find…let’s say just hypocritical.
But this one is written by @line123462

What do you think about all of this?
How do you think the contest is gonna perform?

I feel like gatekeeping a contest is not a good idea. I’m part of the LGTBQ community and I don’t mind the concept of straight people writing an LGBTQ story just as long as it’s good. Why shouldn’t they be able to join just because they haven’t “lived it”? Surely the concept of people educating themselves on a minority is better than saying stay away, this isn’t for you.

And as much as it would be great for authors which aren’t well known and are also part of a minority like the LGTBQ community to gain recognition. That shouldn’t be solely because they fit that criteria. It should be because they wrote a good story.

As for saying straight people might not feel comfortable, after reading those comments I wonder why.

Lolol “how are they going to correctly represent something if they never lived it?”

How about we let everyone join and have LGBTQ+ people judge the competition? Then the best story will win no matter who writes it – and if a straight person can write an identity, they’ll shine?

Plus, it’s not like LGBTQ+ people have an innate ability to write a good story. I’ve seen so many bi people write super offensive stories about gay romances :joy:

If I had time, I would take part, it isn’t like I pay attention to people who try to stop me.

I already have 2 stories, one untouched for longer than I want…

I believe that no matter the theme, everything is possible.
If the author is dedicated enough to do the proper research which not only includes articles, blog, but reaching out and talk with LGBTQIA+ people.
Also, I believe it has been said that the stories don’t have to be about their sexuality, the MC has to be LGBTQIA+, maybe I read it wrong.

I did also say ot would be excluding people because of there sexualitey and people would have gone mad if it was the other Way around

Yeah that also. And I saw some people saying how we “cishets” (??) have all the other contests, and we should let them have this one. Excuse me, but no contest ever was themed “cis” or “straight”. Everyone could write there, with any kind of sexual orientation or gender.

Srsly asking straight people to sit out of this one because it’s LGBTQ themed is stupid.
All the other contest are open for everyone, they still can “shine” in the other contests too, they still can have MCs that are part of the LGBTQ community in other contests, it’s not like the other ones force you to have straight MCs.

Then what are all these comments? Or are we going to act blind now and pretend you didn’t?

I already voiced my opinion on another thread.

This, I agree with this.

I had a read through the whole thread on episode and I have to say that people are really letting the LGBTQ community down over there with their gatekeeping responses. I saw one person literally say “straight people shouldn’t join” which is just stupid. It’s a contest open to everybody. Also being LGBTQ doesn’t make you an expert on it. You only know your experience and if you think it’s the same for everyone then you are mistaken.

I checked the thread again, and fished out some other gems.

I honestly find this painful to read.

How kind of them to say straight people are allowed to join but they shouldn’t

That’s definitely not cliquey or condescending

Do they realize how rude they sound? :joy:

On the other topic a bit.

I saw somewhere on the thread someone mentioning a word “heterophobic” and other forum members laughing and mocking about this stuff.

What do you think?

They have a right to mock it if they want but with the responses they’ve put about heterosexuals, it’s hard to say they weren’t. :joy:
