Alright, I want to get this off my chest. So, let’s get started! Thanks @ShanniiWrites for letting me talk about it lol.
Now, I uploaded a cover for my story “Making A Difference”, and I shared it on my Instagram page. Thanks to @Problematic_Patrick for this awesome cover.
I received messages saying that it was:
- Disrespectful.
- Looks amazing, and really good.
- People being offended.
- Hateful comments about me and the cover.
Shannii told me how she felt and EpisodeShadow as well, but my thing is that I didn’t expect it to offend, or seeing people upset over the cover. I told @Problematic_Patrick to use whatever character he wanted with my character, and he did.
So, let’s talk controversial about this cover. Now, I didn’t really felt hurtful about the hateful comments. I thought this cover was pretty good. Honestly, I didn’t really think people would be upset over it, so I want to hear EVERYONE’S views.
I want to know how you feel, is it offending you? Are you upset about this cover? Is the cover fine to use?
Let’s get talking…

I don’t think it’s overtly offensive. However, the white saviour trope is something that a lot of black people really want to break away from. It might be hard to understand, but please think about it

Ahhhhhh that’s the part right there that I didn’t even know about. 0.0 I guess that brought a lot of attention. Hm, I guess I should have given @Problematic_Patrick a random character to use. Sigh…

Yeah. It’s a trope that on its own isn’t a problem. Like, there’s nothing wrong with a white guy helping or saving people of colour. However, it’s just everywhere. It adds to this image of people of colour being less capable and white people needing to solve their issues all the time.

It’s just something to think about. Like, I don’t think your cover deserved loads of outrage. However, I think it’s one of those tropes people need to think about. In an ideal world, this wouldn’t be an issue and people wouldn’t even think of the white saviour. The problem is our society now

Our society right now, is a complete mess.

Yeah, that’s why I’m very picky over this type of stuff. I don’t mean to but it’s just–

Yeah. The problem is when these themes come up over and over again and we don’t really ever see it happen the other way around. It makes it seem like that’s just the way people see the relationship between white people and POCs.
And that’s ridiculous! I, a POC, help homeless people and a lot of them are white because I’m in a country with a high white population. Anyone can be homeless and anyone can help the homeless.

it’s okay. I’m all ears, my eyes are open. You were upset over it, and I totally understand that you were. Heck, everyone was. Hm, I guess I’m to blame, BUT, it’s all good. At least I am not going to do this again, it was a mistake, and I’ve learned from it.
At least we can talk about this so if anyone else does this kind of cover, we can warn them. I guess.

Make sure you have this discussion with Patrick too.

Yeah it’s a good warning. I’m not sure if you’re a POC or not, but it’s easy not to see these things when you don’t need to worry about tropes like that and how it affects the way people see you
So sometimes it’s good to have a POC point out some of the more “problematic” elements of your story even if they’re not outright racist. We have to deal with that a lot and we’d rather we didn’t

That’s interesting! But the point stands either way. It can help others who might not be used to noticing these things

I understand why. The white saviour complex.

I do 100% think that people shouldn’t have shouted you down, though. All that does it make people fear representing POCs and make them dig their heels in
