âOoh cookies? Iâd love some!â Daisy smiled, following Amalia inside. She took a seat on one of the tables, crossing her legs, waiting for the girl to join her. It was finally an opportunity to take a break from their jobs. Although Daisy doesnât find it too exhausting, sheâd rather be doing something more interesting than just serving someone.
âSo, who are you working for?â she asked, curious.

As Amalia took the container with her name out of the fridge, Daisy was just getting in. She plopped open the tupperware and then took another container with her name out of the fridge. She put them both on the table where Daidy just sat down and quickly grabbed 2 cokes from the fridge before closing it and putting them on the table.
âOh Iâm working for Lady Andrea Acker. Itâs weird, I didnât expect for her to be so ⌠not used to being served. Who are you working forâ Amalia asked. âWould you like a coca cola?â She offered, while holding a spoon to the bottle of coke in front of Daisy, waiting for her to answer so she could open it with the spoon, since itâs her first day and she didnât find the opener anywhere.

Daisy took the coke, staring at it for a second. She couldnât see a bottle opener anywhere. Aside from that, she couldnât figure out what the spoon was supposed to be for.
âAndrea Acker⌠Hmm, doesnât seem familiar to me.â Daisy replied, holding the bottle and the spoon in her hands. And finally, she realized she was supposed to open it with the spoon. Ohh thatâs what the spoon was for! Daisy sighed, opening the bottle. She took one of the cookies to go along with it.
âAnyway, as I was saying, the name doesnât ring a bell. What caste is she part of?â she asked, taking a sip from the coke. âSomething lower, like six?â

âOhâ Andrea exlaimed. âI donât know how I missed those.â She said as she took her hand to look at her rings like a girl checking out her friendâs engagement ring. âTheyâre beautiful. Especially the purple one. I think the colour suits you.â Andrea complimented her.
âMe? Well I like anything that looks good on me and of course vintage things. But Iâm likely to forget to put it on since usually I donât wear any unless the occassion allows for it and I remeber about it ⌠Otherwise I just wouldnât put it on.â

As Daisy was using the spoon to open her coke, which Amalia was going to do for her, but Daisy already did it herself, Amalia opened hers on the countertop.
Amalia was just eating one of the cookies when Daisy asked her something.
âOh no, not at all. Sheâs part of caste four. What about your lady? I havenât heard a word about her.â Amalia said.

Daisy furrowed her brows. âCaste⌠Four? To be honest, I donât think they should pick girls with such low ranks.â she stated, taking another sip straight from the bottle.
âMy lady is Rosemary Edith Dolloway, the actress and model?â To be fair, Daisy didnât know much about her either. She never had the time or freedom to worry about celebrities. The only reason she knew about her was because of her fellow maid, Juniper. âI canât believe you havenât heard of her! Do you live under a rock?â Daisy laughed.

A shiver rolled down Alvivaâs spine when she hears Camilaâs words. It has always been a great fear for her that her parents would ever evict her. She always held on to that glimmer of hope that no one could be so cruel, but somewhere deep down she knew better. It was Camilaâs words that then reassured her and gave her a grateful smile.
Listening to Camilaâs singing, Alviva noticed how different their voices sounded. There was a beauty in the way Camilaâs voice flowed in another language. There was a calmness in her voice that makes your worries fade naturally, and Alviva could almost see her putting her siblings to sleep with it. âYouâre a good big sister, I can understand if they look up to you,â she remarks.
The moment Camila mentioned photography, Alvivaâs eyes lit up. âThatâs so cool, Iâve always had such respect for people who could take such beautiful pictures. Iâve always wanted to learn but my dad never dared to give me a camera, which I can understand with my clumsinessâ says they chuckle. âI havenât been photographed that often but when my photo was taken for the selection I actually secretly liked it. So if you ever need a model you can always ask meâ she adds to the offer of Camila. âBy the way, just out of curiosity, whatâs something youâre looking forward to in the near future? I donât really know what awaits me, but Iâm curious how others feel about thisâ she asks.

âWell hey there, donât look down on a lady. She a better caste than you.â Amalia said. From the other container she took her lunch, a sandwich, and started eating one of triangle shaped halves.
âI never said I havenât heard of her, I just never heard you say who your lady is. I have heard of your lady, but that all. Iâve never seen any of her movies, I only know what she looks like from some or other poster I saw. But that doesnât mean Iâve been living under a rock, Iâve been busy.â Amalia looks at Daisy âYouâre caste six, and so young, some day youâll also be too busy to notice the world moving around you ⌠Everybody from a lower caste like yourself at one point or other becomes like that, unless they move up a caste or if they move down a few too many.â Finally she stopped talking and started eating her sandwic again.

Sanura lets out a sigh and looks at the sky. âThatâs the thing, I want to figure things out for myself. I want to make the mistakes myself so that I can find my own way. I donât need someone else telling me what to do and what not to do. Weâre all just a little struggling to find our way in the world and everyone better focus on their own lives before interfering in someone elseâs,â she explains with a shrug. Youâre not lost, just in the wrong place was a way Sanura hadnât looked at it yet. âI like that,â she mutters.
With a slight tilt, she looks at him as he talked. She can see itâs something he doesnât find easy. Silently she puts a hand on his back and then exhales deeply through her nose. âSometimesâŚitâs hard to make the right choice. We regret the things we didnât do and forget the things we did do. In the end, you were there in time for himâŚYou were by his side when it was most important, and he rested with a peaceful heart. It may be painfulâŚbut I think it is better that you were able to say goodbye to him while he was still here than when it was too lateâ she spoke her mind. âthere are plenty of people who realize too late what their parents mean to them and even those who never realize it. Iâm actually glad to hear that you still had a chance to make amends with your father.â she then spoke softly before letting a silence fall. âIâm going to be very blunt now, so sorry in advance if it comes across as annoyingâ She then started. âI think youâre holding on to your father the wrong way. Itâs almost like youâre trying to punish yourself for what happened between you two. You look back with regret instead of love and sadness instead of happiness. I think that your father was glad that you were by his side in the end and that he could leave this world knowing that his son loves him. Personally, I think that if you really want to honor your father you have to let go of your regrets because I doubt he wants you to think of him with repentance all your life.â She told him carefully but firmly.

âI may be just a maid, but I still have my opinion on how things should be ran. It just makes more sense for someone of a higher caste to be the princeâs bride, doesnât he deserve the best?â she sighed, resting her head on her palm. âBut unfortunately, itâs not like that will ever be me, so I canât do anything but sit back and watch.â
Daisy laughed, though nervously, at the realization that she was the one who hadnât heard of Edith. Not Amalia. âHer movies are pretty good, you should watch them sometimes!â she added, trying to take attention from what she said earlier. She took another cookie as she listened to Amalia talk.
Move down a few castes, huh? Definitely rings a bell⌠she thought to herself. Daisy laughed again, unsure of what to say. âYouâre pretty wise~â she remarked, but she couldnât help but wonder if the girl was speaking from experience. But Amalia didnât seem old enough to have lived through that, so Daisy decided to ignore it. There most likely wasnât anyone else in the same situation as her, as much as she wished there were.

When Daisy answerred, Amalia was not surprised, she has already determined not to make a friend out of her anytime in the near future, but she didnât let that show in her answer. In her answer she seemed indifferent to any and all things Daisy. âWell, I actually believe somebody of a caste four or five or below would be just perfect to become a queen. Donât get me wrong, but I think the higher castes might know glamour, but nothing prepares them for the loss of social life that comes from suddenly becoming royalty. I believe somebody just from caste four, a person who was raised governing or controlling something minor, that such a person would know best how to rule. After all itâs the same thing my lady has been doing her whole life, this is just on a different scale. Itâs so sad to see how sheâs not that interested in becoming a queen.â

Thomas listened to Sanura as she tried consoling him. He knew what he told her wasnât quite the truth, but her advice helped him still. âThank you.â He said. âIâve never told anybody about my father before.â This is true, except she doesnât that she is one of those people he hasnât told about his father, at least not the full truth. Thomas grabbed her, and looked her straight in the eye. From the way he grabbed her, and from the way heâs looking at her it was almost like he wanted to kiss her, but when he went into it, it turned into a tight hug instead. While embracing her he said âIâve been carrying this for a long time and maybe it was my mistake to not speak of it before, but ⌠you just helped me greatly.â He said and let her go.

Sanura gave him a kind and compassionate smile. âSometimes we need someone who isnât in the situation to look at it with a rational eyeâ she says just before he pulls her into a hug. She was a little taken aback at first, but then she wrapped her arms around him. It took her a few deep breaths not to get carried away with the emotions. She could tell from his voice that he meant it and for her this was the first time she had been sincerely thanked by someone. She thought it was fair since he has been so open to tell him something back. âI know what it feels like to be swallowed up with guilt. When I just had my accident I was so mad at everything. I was mad at the world for taking my passion away. I was mad at every look of pity because it felt to me that I didnât deserve itâŚâ she begins and remains silent for a few seconds as she looks down at her fidgeting hands. âmy parents were almost always the target of this anger. They tried their best to help me but each time I filled in my guilt on their wordsâŚâ she lets out a sigh, âwe eventually reached the point my parents had decided it would be better for me to be alone for a while, and they distanced themselves. I know now that they did this for me, but at the time I resented them very much. I had so much anger inside me that I had given up. My improvements slowed down rapidly and the doctors began to doubt whether I would continue to make progress. One day an old woman came to lie in my ward. She had broken her ankle and had to stay in the hospital until a place in the retirement home became available. Every day she had family over and one day she asked about mine⌠I told her they had abandoned me but she didnât believe this. She told me a story about her husband who cut off contact with his family because they did not approve of the old lady. When he suddenly passed over, the lady saw his family again for the first time, and she shared the stories with them that they could no longer experience with him. She told me that in that moment she realized that distancing herself from someone dear to us cannot bring us any extra joy, only missed opportunities and an escape from possible a few arguments that are unavoidable. Immediately afterwards I missed my parents and begged the nurse to call themâ she finished her story, not with a sad look, but a peaceful sigh.

Thomas listened to the story Sanura told about her parents and the old lady, and to that he had only one question. âDo you miss them now? Your parents, I mean. If you missed them then, you must miss them now.â He said. He was thinking about his family. What Sanura said might be true for some, but Thomas kept thinking about his mother and his siblings back home, and he felt no such thing. But since in this story his only relative he remebers is his father, he had to pretend. âThat is exactly what I felt for my father ⌠But when I felt it, I could never see him again. The old lady was right.â It hurt Thomas to lie to the girl like that, he didnât feel that way at all. He knew his brother and he felt nothing for him.

Although Amalia made a good point, Daisy still wasnât convinced. She only shrugged. A prince should only marry the best, she thought, and for her that was decided through their rank. Not their skills, their personality, but rather their status in society. âWell, in the end, it doesnât matter what she can do. Most people would only judge her by her rank.â
But what Daisy could understand the least, was how Andrea didnât want to rule as queen. âShe⌠Doesnât want to be a queen?â What!? But her life would be so much easier!" she commented. âShe would never have to worry about anything, not finances, not working and risking being fired at any time, not having to worry about whether she could keep her home, if she would lose any of the aboveâŚâ Daisy paused, realizing she mightâve projected a little bit.

Sanura nodded when he asked if she missed her parents. âSure, although itâs different from then. Now Iâm separated from them but I know Iâll see them again. Itâs different and less painfulâ she explains. Then she nodded at his words and stretched. âBut thatâs life. You will always have hard times, and always regret things. Itâs what you learn from it that mattersâ she says simply and then turns to Thomas. âSo Mr. Fruit Man, what have you learned from it?â she asks with a grin. The change of tone was meant to break free from the deep conversations. It was easy to stay in those negative stories, but Sanura knew it didnât do anyone any good to do so.

Amalia chuckled âI hope youâre only joking and youâre not that simple minded that you think a Queen has such a simple life.â Amalia sat down, getting ready to explain things to Daisy she might be too young to understand.
âChild, do you not realize that after the Kingâs death the support of the people is not the same? Some would go with the Prince no matter what, but some donât want to see him on the throne. A Queen always has and always will have to think about any and all rebellions that might want the monarchy dead, because often itâs her who dies with the monarchy too. You think she doesnât care about finances? A Queen care about the finances of her whole country, and if something goes wrong with the money, itâs the King and Queen who are blamed for it and theyâre expected to rectify it. She might not have to worry about getting fired, she has to worry about not getting assassinated or being stripped of her throne from people who want democracy. If you want not to worry about getting fired ⌠You canât ⌠But once youâre fired you could get hired by somebody else, and that will only be impossible if youâre fired for being an absoutely horrible worker, in which case youâd have no business looking for a job. But once a Queen has been assassinated or overthrown, she canât so easily take that back. Nobody is ever as secure as you believe a Queen is. Thereâs always danger lurking around somewhere.â

Sanura nodded in agreement But stopped him later. âItâs not a competition, a personâs unhappiness canât be measured by how bad it was because everyone experiences it differently,â she says as she listens to his words.
âMake no mistake, history tends to repeat itselfâ she notes before pondering his question. In the end, she decides to keep her answer lighthearted. âIâve learned that life sucks and that you can get depressed but it doesnât pay off. So itâs wasted time,â she says simply. âitâs your life and you have to live it how you want it and do everything it takes to do so, because it rarely goes your wayâ she added.

âIâm not saying itâs a competition, but it would be stupid for me to claim I had it worse than you. And I agree that everybody experiences difficult times differently. But Iâm not saying youâre less happy than I am, I just said your times were more difficult than mine.â He turned back to talking, and then when he was finished, he listened to her.
âDonât talk like that. No time is wasted. If youâre sad now and if youâve been sad for a while, just imagine how happy you will be once your life will turn for the better. It might not last long before youâre unhappy again, but trust me when I tell you that the longer you carry a burden like sadness, the better you feel withouth it on your back. Sanura started to laugh as Thomas was trying to defend himself. âDude calm down, you donât have to defend yourself to me, it wasnât an attackâ she laughed. âI was just acknowledging your hard times, nothing more, nothing lessâ she added and then listened to him. âOh I know that. I know the sadness is allowed to be felt and that you will feel better later, but I find it a waste of time to linger in it for too long as it will just leave more scars as wellâ she explained.
His next comment confused Sanura a little as he just told her his father wasnât alive anymore. âSo you believe in the afterlife?â I asked as that would also explain it and she didnât want to come off rude.
