What Makes You Pick Up a Book?

When I’m in a library and I’m just looking for anything to read, I mostly look for good titles and then read the blurb to see if I might like the story. I don’t really care about how the cover looks as long as the story seems interesting :smile_cat:

What makes you pick up a book in a shop or a library?

I have to be really stoked at the plot and the general idea of the story

That will make me pick it up but not necessarily read on

If the story description is interesting, or the book is written by an author I know and love.

The cover is the first thing to draw me in, then I’ll read the synopsis to see if I’ll actually like it.

The description has to attract me in some way… maybe because it’s relatable, it has to do with something I’m interested in or going through at the moment, it sounds fun and entertaining… they say don’t judge a book by its cover, but a good cover does get my attention…

I’ve found it’s the premise that makes me pick up any kind of story. Usually I’m disappointed by the really interesting premises tho  They never get developed fully

Usually i read the description and if I like the description then I try to read the first few pages. Cuz sometimes books don’t really pull you in and I like to read books that instantly grab you and pull you inside lol.

Genre first, as there are some genres (romance) I generally won’t touch. That is, unless the cover captures my attention. … First I read the the blurb, then if that sounds good, I read the first page. If I wanna read more then I get the book.

Ah, you’re not a romance person either?

Nope. I’m anti-romance in life. But in stories, I’m not against it, it just has to written really well or be a really minor plot line.

I love well-written romances, especially slow-burn and hate-to-love relationships.

Yes, agreed. Though I’m not a fan of the full romance genre.

Yes. Sometimes romance kinda ruins a book…

Yeah, it definitely can. Same with films.
