New York city, February , 2040.
”Ms. McCarthy, you have a visitor.” the assistant followed Veronica through the hallways, trying to divert her attention to the girl waiting in her office. She kept walking around, talking on the phone (work stuff I swear) and doing things. ”do they have an appointment?” she asked, expecting her assistant to know her schedule by now
”No, but-”
”No buts, I don’t have time for this Alice, tell them to call the office and schedule an appointment” she replied, dismissing the idea as she went back to focusing on her stuff, walking back to her office, as her phone rang again. Important busy people get that sometimes I suppose.
What was she even doing, you’re probably asking. Well, the past few years haven’t been too hard on her, she lived (surprisingly) her life, got married, got divorced, became a successful lawyer and businesswoman and yada yada yada. In a way, even the relationship between her and Valerie was only getting better with time, she no longer resented her sister for everything that had happened in the past, but there was still something different, their relationship never got as close as they were when they were kids. But I mean, it’s way better than nothing isn’t it?
”*business business work related stuff very smart sounding words and it is important the law says something don’t forget to be at court on time yada yada” she was on a work related call as she walked into her office, just to find a random girl sitting there. ”John, I’ll call you back” she told the man on the phone and hang up ”yes, may I know who are you, and why are you in my office?” she asked the stranger on front of her, crossing her arms as she waited for an answer.
”I’m your daughter”
flashback, London, 2022
”Don’t do this to me, I can’t handle this on my own” she almost begged, looking at the man in front of her in the eyes, praying that she wouldn’t have to handle this all by herself. ”this is your child too”
”Veronice please, you know I cannot help you with this. I am a married man, I am a public figure, I can’t just waltz around town and have random babies out of wedlock.” the man responded ”do you know what would happen if my wife heard about this? Or my mother? She’s dying either way at least let her go without thinking I’m a failure. Or even worse, what if the press found out?. My life will be ruined, I will be the shame of my entire family and I cannot let that happen. For that matter I want nothing to do with your baby, if I knew about this earlier I would have wished for you to abort it, so as far as I know it has nothing to do with me.” he added coldly and walked away.
It was the last time she saw him.
And there she was, alone, with a baby she didn’t want, and with nobody to help her through it.
How did she even end up in this situation? Well, having an affair with a married man is never a good start. Especially not with this specific kind of married men. They do things , and then try to cover up their mess as if their actions have no consequences. Well guess what? they do. There a bloody consequence probably crying to an incompetent babysitter at these very moments, and what the hell was she supposed to do about it? She was in no place to be a single mother, not to mention she didn’t even want children. Or at least not in her 20s.
end of flashback
So as you probably guessed, considering this random girl came by her office about 18 years later claiming to be her daughter, Veronica never actually kept up with being a single mother. Or even a mother in general. Did she regret abandoning her own child? To some extent, yes, but she didn’t expect this to be happening now.
”You… what?”
part 2
Beryl heights, January 2040
Turns out that’s what you’re supposed to do when your family isn’t your actual family, you get a DNA test. (remember that in a few months Diego)
Not like she was unhappy with the “family” she got, I mean it’s just one person it’s not really considered a family is it? Well I don’t know, either way, at this point in her life, Florence had just turned 18, and for her birthday present for herself, she wanted to find out her real origin. Where the hell did she come from? Because honestly even Cornell didn’t know, so who better know than a DNA test? who were her parents? Did they die? Did they just abandon her on the street like some kind of garbage? Well, let’s find out.
”Here are your results miss Carter, just sign here are your free to go” the receptionist at the dna testing told her, handing her a bunch of different papers.
”thank you” Florence replied with a light smile, signed the stuff and left the building. This was it, the answers she had been looking for were in her hand. Looking at the papers, she read carefully and found out… well… she could have had a very different life. Also she found out that most likely her parents are both alive, or at least one was for certain, and it wasn’t someone she was expecting.
New York City, February, 2040
”You… what?”
The woman who apparently was her birth mother stared at her in shock, I guess you don’t expect your kid to waltz up into your office one day after you completely left them to rot in the street am i right? But surprise, ms… McCarthy.
”Im Florence, your daughter. Or at least biologically, because you have never been a mother to me” she told her, examining the woman in front of her. Needless to say, she was beautiful, but for some reason also familiar, very familiar. How could that be? She had never met that woman in her life? Not to mention she lives all the way out in New York, which is just far. The chances of them meeting before at an age where she could actually remember things were approximately zero.
”oh dear god” the woman said, putting her hand over her mouth. ”Florence” she repeated, looking at the girl in front of her. She was so grown, looking so confident and beautiful, though in a way she also looked a bit like her father which wasn’t the best but she did take the good genes out of that horrid man.
”Care to explain?” Florence asked, raising her brow as she waited for an answer. Just a little something to explain to her why her life was the way it was. How did it come to this?
”how did you-” she started asking how she even found her, and was interrupted by someone knocking at the door ”ms. McCarthy the Florida office representative called-” the assistant started, only to be stopped by Veronica ”Alice please, can’t you see I’m busy?” she asked the nice assistant at the door, gesturing at the visitor she told her about earlier ”oh- I’m sorry. I’ll tell them to call you back” she added and left the room, gesturing a subtle smile to the girl sitting in the chair in front of Veronica.
”I took a dna test. I wanted to find out where I actually came from and as you probably could guess you were the most… approachable” she said, considering her oh-so-respectable father wasn’t exactly in reach. I mean he was, but not as simple as walking into his office unannounced. ”lets just put it that way. I don’t need you, just as much as you don’t need or want me, I just want to know why, and how did my life end up the way they did?”
”Yes. Of course.” Veronica looked away, taking a deep breath as she tried to figure out what to say. How does one even start explaining when it comes to matters like this? Nothing she could say would justify her actions, there are many different ways to handle an unwanted pregnancy, this was not one of them. Or at least not a good one.
Veronica sighed ”I didn’t- well… I was only twenty years old when I had you, I had nothing, my life was as chaotic as they could get” she started explaining ”your father… well, when I told him I had a baby, he didn’t want anything to do with me anymore because he was afraid of an outrageous scandal or some bullsht that could ruin his precious reputation and marriage. ” she explained. I mean, if your marriage is so important to you why the fck you out having affairs in the first place? Ha? Thought about that? Probably not. Men.
”I couldn’t… ” she took a deep breath and looked back at Florence ”I couldn’t raise you” she told her, which wasn’t technically true, she just didn’t believe she could. ”so you decided to leave me out in the street?” Florence replied ”you can’t raise me, but the streets? Sure they can” she snorted and rolled her eyes at the woman’s excuses. ”i can see now that wasn’t the right thing to do, but try to understand, I was young, I was lost, I had nobody. I would have done it differently if I could go back, but look at you now, you’re all grown and beautiful, you survived just right and I’m sure it only made you stronger” Veronica added, gesturing at the girl
”and none of it was thanks to you. You ruined my life, Veronica. As messy as your life was, imagine what it’s like to grow up on the streets as a bloody child all on my own. You could never understand that with your fancy suits and your fancy office with these stupid fancy floor to ceiling windows, admit it, you probably never had a hard day in your life. You were probably born into this rich entitled family and had an affair with the prince just because you can, then just dropped me off in the trash like your actions have no consequences. Well guess what? They do.“ she started going out on her, for all the trauma she caused her as a child simply by not being there. She could have had such a different life at this point, she wouldn’t have to do all the things she had done to survive, she could actually fit in with the people around her, and not be the weird secretly poor new girl that steals things and works at a fcking strip club just so she can live like a normal person
”Florence, please-”
”don’t-” Florence stopped her ”you don’t get to florence, please me. You know, when I originally did the test, I kinda wished to find out my birth parents were dead, just so I don’t have to live with knowing for a fact that i wasn’t fcking good or important enough for them to even fcking want me. ” she admitted, and got up from her seat ”why did I even come here? I don’t even know what I was expecting. So thanks for nothing, enjoy your fancy pathetic life.” she finished and just walked out, banging the door behind her.
