Mareena Stokes
Mareena was always good at controlling her emotions. It didn’t matter if she was angry or upset, there was always a facade able to be put up. She has used it many times before whether it was when she lost her sister, when they asked about if she knew something, or even when she was cheated on. the girl always acted like she was fine in the toughest of situations. Her biggest regret now though was never telling the truth that day, letting her fear of losing the rest of her loved ones take control of her. Staring blankly ahead of her as a memory or nightmare as she would call it played through her mind once again.

It has been exactly forty minutes and thirty five seconds according to that clock since she last saw her sister. She waited for someone to come into the interrogation room. Sitting in the cold steel chair, the last ten minutes she saw of her sister kept replaying. From her tear stained cheeks and the crumbled note in her hand, she had no clue what she would say. The clock ticked by slowly, giving her plenty to time to think about what all went wrong, what she should’ve done, and should do. They knew her name and more importantly her family. They knew everything. The note proved all of that. It had their names, address, and work. All she had was a detail. An important detail to them, their faces. But who knows what they would do if they found out. If they had threatened to kill her, she would’ve been fine. Anything for her sister, but they didn’t. They threatened her whole family and even friends. Her baby sister, her joy, the one she made flower crowns with or everyone she loved? How could anyone choose let alone her? Yet, there had to be a decision made. All she wanted to do was close her eyes and open them to a different reality, but every time she closed them those faces haunted her. It never worked anyways. No matter how tight she shut her eyes it was always the same terrifying reality it has been. Just an hour before Mareena was hiding near her with a smile on her face, shushing Laurel quiet. Then someone grabbed her sister from behind and threw Mare to the ground stopping her from trying to help her. Not knowing why they took Laurel and not her. She screamed and ran after her sister as fast as she could, but they were faster. Much faster. How quickly things could happen. Then her thoughts were cut short when the door opened to a detective entering. Putting on her game face, she lied. Mareena lied about it all. Just the note into her jacket pocket in time. It finished just as quickly as it started. The lady asked the basic questions. “What did you see?” “Did you get the license plate number?” “Did you hear anything?” And all she responded was with a shake of her head or “No, nothing.” Everything that came out of her mouth made her wanna vomit with all the guilt she was feeling. It was exactly what she did after she left that room. Vomiting in the trash can just outside of that frightening room.
End of Flashback
That is what keeps her up at night. No matter what, she hasn’t been able to get a good nights rest. Her body still is filled with guilt and regret. What if she would’ve told them the truth? She could have her sister and be happy, but no. Mare is disgusted with herself. She has hidden it pretty well don’t you think? No one knows besides her brother. He was the one that would rush to her side when she would wake up screaming after the same nightmare she always has. Theo doesn’t even know all of it either. Mare wanted to tell him so many times, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do such. She would never let herself sleep when with him. Too scared they would appear again. Who would ever wanna take the chance of waking his peaceful self up? So instead she would just lay there next to him, never truly tired. Her eyes are wide open and her mind always thinking. She only slept at home and usually when no ones there since her sleep is short lived. As of right now, she wants to let her facade drop. How come this is her breaking point? Is it her breaking point? Maybe because she might be losing another person she cares about?
Dragged out of her own mind, she didn’t know how long it had been, but she can still hear some type of sirens. so not long. She swallowed and wiped the new found hot tears away with the sleeve of her shirt. She struggled to keep her emotions contained for once. Mareena rushed to the car and hopped in, opening the door for… her. The second Pierce had a bit of an attitude but she brushed some of it off as she muttered,“Aren’t you her sister?” to her herself. Regretting it too as she is in a vulnerable state. She started up the car and sped after the ambulance in a hurry,“I-” She cleared her throat,“I know of a few nearby. I’ll follow just in case.” She responded much more calmly. Mare glanced at the girl before gesturing to the glove box,“I have wipes in there and extra clothes in the back seat if you’d like to change into them.” She offered them to her. She doesn’t need to be covered in jess’s blood. Nodding in answer to the girl’s request, but Mare just sped up instead to keep up. As she spoke it sent shivers down her spine. Maybe it’s just a feeling and is wrong. Of course Jess is not good now, but that doesn’t mean she won’t be in the future. “Ok, ok. It’s fine. I can only imagine what is going on in your mind right now.” Mare wanted to know what happened. So very badly. The curiousness within her was biting at her. She didn’t know if she should even ask though so she left it alone for now. All she could do right now is reassure her,“Jess has to be fine you know. I’m sure you didn’t. Is it even your doing?” Mare questioned, hopefully taking a bit of guilt off the girl. It was quiet, not very awkward since both had things running through their minds right now. “I’m Mareena if that’s your question and who are you exactly?” Mare had an idea of who she was, but she didn’t know her name.
