Discussion: Autism and misconceptions

True that!! Autism has nothing to do with politics or sexual orientation, it’s absolutely disgusting that people are really ignorant about it.

We all function differently!

Amen to that.

Anything else that bugs us people on the spectrum?

Oh yes, when they claim that vaccination causes autism. Nonsense! I would rather be vaccinated than die of disease.

Even if the vaccine and Autism thing were true it wouldn’t effect those on the spectrum at least XD.

Sorry that was probably a bad joke.

I hate that rumour, not only because people use it as an excuse to not vaccinate their kids but because it’s not a proven fact!

It also tries to imply that autism is something scary and terrible when it isn’t.

It’s not terrible.

Autism in women isn’t discussed often. I suffer from Asperger’s as @BrutallyBritish said. You’re still normal, trust me. A learning disability makes you no different.

I’ve been bullied before as well, for my autism, race, appearance, religion and gender (sexual discrimination)

There’s a website for mental health and physical health that I joined.

The worst stereotype is people assuming that you’re stupid.

What do you mean?

That’s true. Culture & religion are very dismissive about autism in women, they sympathise more with men than with us women.

Autistic females are just as important as autistic males.

I once had a conversation with the doctor about Asperger’s & autism and she said that it’s easy for health professionals to diagnose males than females when it comes to Asperger’s & autism.

Oh wow that’s crazy!!

People need to pay attention to autistic females more often because this can’t be dismissed. Especially when these traits are similar to males.

Just the usual patriarchy. I’m glad that I can be open about my autism without people saying “you don’t look autistic!”, hmm?

@line123462 awesome clapback, girl!

Yup!

I find it annoying af that parents expect me to be civil with certain people I hate which I can’t help but murder these fools with my sharp words.

Exactly! Like why should I be so… formal?

True that.

Seriously though, I was so annoyed with my grandma earlier on because she started talking about my cousin whose name rhymes with rat. I told her not to talk about her and my grandma decided to get defensive, saying that I shouldn’t hold a grudge. Well, I have rights to cut people out of my life.
