Someone might say Aurora looks like a private school sailor moon today and there is one thing she’ll say to that: “Why are you mean?” She looked quite sweet and gentle… and kind. That’s all that mattered on this first day because just like every year, Aurora had an essential task. With a cup of steaming tea cradled in her hands, she sat at her desk, surrounded by stacks of documents containing information on the new students. It was her responsibility to ensure that each one felt welcomed and included in the day to day life of Ninth House.
Sifting through the papers, Aurora made mental notes of each student’s interests, background, and potential challenges they might face in their new environment. She knew the importance of making a personal connection with each one, of being the warm smile and guiding hand they needed during this transitional period. Now this might sound very serious - Aurora having all these papers but there was just some simple things she needed to know, and it’s not like she keeps them… It goes right back to her father’s office.
Ayla Ki, Freya Hastings… Hastings, she knew that last name. Esther Dubois, Kairo Hall, Lyra Skylark… That might be challenging. Yoo Seung-min, Desdemona Sevdaliza, Dominic Vaillant… That picture looked so… Familiar? Casey Robinson, Elijah and Floriano D’Angelo.
Sometimes, she wished she could experience what they were experiencing now. A new environment, new friends, new life, new beginnings. Aurora never had that. Aurora never saw this place as a school but home. She didn’t know any other home. A soft smile appeared on her lips as she tried to imagine what their lives looked like before they came here - who were they, what does their bedroom look like, their living room? What is a real living room? What does it mean to live with your family, only your family, in a house somewhere in the world?
After a quick glance at the clock reminded her of the time, Aurora set aside the documents and reached for her cup of tea, the steam rising gently in the air. She took a moment to savor the warmth of the porcelain against her fingertips before bringing the cup to her lips. With a small, knowing smile, she tilted the cup slightly, watching as the residual leaves danced and twirled in the liquid. It was something she did from time to time, finding comfort in the playful patterns that formed at the bottom of her cup from those dried leaves. She liked to think she could predict the future through those patterns, though she didn’t take these predictions too seriously, there was a certain magic in the act of divination. But as Aurora studied the patterns more closely, a sense of unease crept over her. She thought she saw glimpses of shadowy figures, their forms twisting in an unsettling manner. Strange symbols emerged from the depths of the tea. As she continued to watch, the shapes seemed to blur and morph, taking on a more ominous tone. It was as if the tea leaves were trying to convey a message, a warning perhaps, but the meaning remained unknown. With a shiver, Aurora set the cup aside and stood up, trying to force her mind to think about the important things - getting out of her room and finding those new students.

With determination in her stride, Aurora walked down the hallways, her heart set on spreading warmth and kindness to every corner of the school. She greeted familiar faces with genuine enthusiasm as she walked, exchanging pleasantries and sharing snippets of her own excitement for the new school year. To someone else, this might seem too forced, too fake, but Aurora could never understand why someone would think that? Is that really how they felt about her?
She always thought her infectious energy seemed to brighten the spirits of those around her. As Aurora made her way through the bustling corridors, she spotted a group of students chatting. Second year, she remembered. With a warm smile, she approached them, eager to join in their conversation. “Hey, Aurora!” one of the students exclaimed, their face lighting up as they caught sight of her. “How was your summer?” “It was great, thanks for asking!” Aurora replied cheerfully. “Spent most of it catching up on some reading and spending time with family. What about you?” She caught herself lying but could they really tell? No.
As they engaged in lighthearted banter, Aurora’s eyes scanned the crowd, searching for any unfamiliar face. It didn’t take long for her to spot a figure leaning casually against the wall, observing the commotion with a hint of amusement. There he was… A new student!! And from what she remembered… Kairo Elias Hall.
Enigma Stag.
Musician… Obviously.
Into art.
That was all she knew so far.
A playful glint sparkled in Aurora’s eyes as she approached the newcomer. A good looking one, if she might add. “Hey there,” she greeted him with a grin, “There are plenty of benches around here, you know? You don’t need to lean against… A wall. Do you know how hard it is to keep them so shiny?” Her tone was light, infused with a hint of teasing. But as soon as the words left her lips, Aurora realized how they might be interpreted. Quick to dispel any misunderstanding, she let out a laugh and raised her hands in a gesture of reassurance. “Sorry, just kidding!” She exclaimed, her laughter echoing through the hallway. By now everyone has gotten used to it. Do you hear someone laugh? It’s probably Aurora!
But what Aurora didn’t realize is that maybe now everyone new knew who she really was. She always thought it was quite common knowledge so she simply introduced herself, not saying anything else. “I’m Aurora, by the way. Welcome to Ninth House! If you need anything, know that I am always here to help,” her smile got even brighter, if that was possible.
Now what would you think if a girl just walked up to you like this? Would you think she was a little crazy, or hitting on you? That never crossed Aurora’s mind, she was simply doing her job. “Enigma Stag… Right? Enchanted Music Composition, what a great start! Professor Walsh is great, you’ll love her. But I believe you’d be looking for classroom 25 which… Is on the other side. Alllll the way…” Aurora turned, waving her arm around to show him the right direction. “Over there.” Turning to face him again, her gaze and smile softened, realizing she didn’t give the guy any space to properly talk.
